2013 TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS TEAM PREVIEW

The Buccaneers were busy in the off season after a disappointing 7-9 finish.
Faced with a subpar defensive ranking against the pass from 2012, the front office moved aggressively to trade for difference-making cornerback Darrelle Revis, sign safety Dashon Goldson and draft highly-touted collegian Johnathan Banks in the second round to shore up a very shaky defensive backfield.

Tampa Bay fielded the league’s worst passing defense in 2012 (4,758 yards allowed) and went to work to shore up its secondary with a pair of huge free-agent signings that should remedy that issue this season.
The proof is in the pudding, though, and Darrelle Revis and Dashon Goldson are going to have to prove they were worth the price.
Revis, on the heels of a couple tumultuous seasons with the New York Jets, didn’t get the new contract he was looking for, instead being dealt to the Bucs for the 13th pick in the 2013 NFL draft and a conditional pick in the 2014 draft.

Following that trade, Tampa Bay locked up the league’s best cornerback to a six-year, $96 million deal. The best part? The Bucs included no guaranteed money in the contract, meaning if Revis’ injury problems creep up again while in Tampa Bay, the team will have effectively negated the monetary concerns.
Goldson, meanwhile, was one of the biggest names to hit free agency this offseason, but with the San Francisco 49ers unwilling to pay the 29-year-old safety the money he was looking for, Goldson hit the open market with a bevy of potential suitors waiting to pounce.
The Bucs pulled the trigger on a five-year, $41.25 million contract for Goldson, who stands to make Tampa Bay’s safety duo one of the top units in the league. The Bucs were not done there after addressing the defensive backfield.
The team also went out and signed defensive tackle Mike Pattterson, defensive ends Armonte Bryant and Justin Francis, and strong safety Winston Guy.
Patterson who is a 9 year vet will help on the DL. He has put up 17 sacks, 1 interception, forced 4 fumbles and he has a nose for the ball recovering 8 balls while also returning 1 for a touchdown.
Armonte Bryant is a rookie who was undrafted and is a big Hitter with tremendous swim moves and he will get pressure.
Justin Francis , who is only 24 is a 1 year vet and put up 3 sacks and 13 tackles in his rookie season playing in only 2 games. Francis who was also undrafted is another big Hitter who is a bull rusher and although still raw will be developed to eventually take over the left defensive end role.

The Bucs also as active on the offensive side of the ball extending the contract of WR Vincent Jackson
that'll pay him more than $55 million for five more seasons. Now entering his ninth NFL year, he established a career-high with 72 catches, eclipsed 1,000 yards for the fourth time en route to a career-high 1,384 and led the NFL with a yards-per-catch clip of 19.2 yards -- also his personal best. He scored eight times, including a 95- yarder, and gives Freeman a legitimate top end target through the air.
The Bucs also signed Kevin Ogletree to a deal. Ogletree who was with Dallas last season is a 4 year vet . Ogletree had 32 catches for 436 yards and 4 touchdowns last season and he will bring speed to the WR position to help stretch the field.
The Bucs also inked WR Mike Williams to a new 6 year contract that runs to the 2018 season that is worth $40.25 million, with $10 million in guarantees through 2014.His 23 touchdowns since 2010 are the most by any Tampa Bay player after three seasons in the league.

The team then went out in free agency and got another veteran receiver in Randy Moss and RB Jahvid Best who was released the the Lions after concussion issues forced him to sit out the entire 2012 season. Best was checked out by extensively by team doctors before he was offered a tender and Best is fit to play. A former 1st round pick in the 2010 draft , Best is a dynamic back who totaled 1042 yards from scrimmage 58 catches and 6 touchdowns as a rookie.
The team also signed veteran fullback Chris Pressley to a 1 year deal. Pressley spent the 2009 and 2010 season with the Bucs before signing with Cincinnati in 2011. Pressley will bring a strong blocking presence with him and will clear the path for Martin and Best.
The Bucs did not finish there as they also adressed the TE position when they went out an signed Tom Crabtree who played for the Packers from 2010-2012. The Team also signed tight end Nate Byham who previously played for Pittsburgh.
This brings us now to the question of Freeman.
Freeman's completion rate dipped from 62.8 to 54.8 last season, though his TDs were up by 11 (16 to 27) and his INTs dropped from 22 to 17. Freeman
who is in the last year of his rookie deal has all the tools needed now to produce and this season will be his to prove he is worthy of a new long term deal.

The Bucs were really busy in the off season and on paper have improved on both sides of the ball. Now they must translate all of the effort put into building the team to the field and hopefully a playoff apperance in 2013.

WEEK 1 2013 Season Bucs Fall To Jets 31-17

The Bucs lose their opener in New York 31-17. The team could not overcome Freeman's 5 interceptions. Freeman was 11/23/ 210 Yds with 1 TD and 5 Int. Martin had 67 yards on 15 carries and Moss had 4 receptions for 63 yards. Best and Jackson scored 1 TD each.
On defense Dakota Watson led the team with 5 tackles and a sack . Rookie DE Armonte Bryant had a sack and a fumble recovery in his first game as a Buc. The defense forced 2 fumbles as Barron and Goldson each had big hits. Conner Barth was 1/2 on FG's missing a easy 38 yard FG as the ball just wouldn't travel. The Bucs kept it close early on before giving up some points early in the 3rd quarter, but fought back and had a chance to tie it late but a fluke interception cost them on a late drivethat the Jets turned into a TD to seal it.
Overall a very disappointing opening day in New York . Hopefully the team will bounce back next week as they host the Saints.

GG Jets. Good luck the rest of the way.

BUCS TRADE FREEMAN TO THE VIKINGS

Vikings Send Ponder a 1st and a 3rd to Tampa Bay

The Buccaneers have traded QB Josh Freeman , who is in his contract season to Minnesota . Freeman who has not lived up to expectations was traded to the Vikings for QB Christian Ponder and a pair of draft picks. The Bucs will receive Minnesota's 1st round pick this season and their 3rd round pick next season.
Freeman has not been consistant and continues to be bitten by the interception bug.
Although Freeman does have a strong arm he has been struggling with ball placement and tends to hold the ball too long in the pocket. Freeman was held out of practice and told early this afternoon that he has been dealt to the Vikings. Freeman is in his 5th year and was drafted in the 1st round , 17th overall in 2009. He has passed for 13173 yards with 79 TD's and 68 int's and has a 55.6 % completion rate.

Christian Ponder , who is in his 2nd season was chosen in the 1st round , 12th overall by the Vikings in 2011. Ponder will bring more mobility to the QB position and Ponder has the ability to sense pressure and either throw the ball away or scramble out of trouble. In his 2 year career Ponder has thrown for 4856 yards with 32 TD's and 25 int's and has a 60.6% completion rate.

Freeman is in his contract year and the Bucs are hesitant about the prospect of a big contract looming as freeman may demand big time money and felt now was the time to act and get some value in the likely case Freeman was to test the free agent market after the season.

Bucs Trade For James Jones and Sign Kevin Burnett

    [IMG] [IMG]

The Bucs traded their 2013 2nd round pick to the Packers for Wide Receiver James Jones. Jones is 29 years old and is a 6 year vet. He was a 3th round pick in the 2007 draft by the Packers and will become the Bucs # 2 Wide Receiver opposite Vincent Jackson. The Bucs have now got their receiving corp set with Jackson and Jones on the outside and Moss and Mike Williams in the slot. Kevin Ogletree will spell both Jackson and Jones from time to time. To make room for Jones on the roster the Bucs released Tyquan Underwood.

Jones brings a lot to the team. First off He brings leadership to this young squad and Jones knows how to win. Jones has superbowl experience as well with a ring from Super Bowl XLV. Jones has a never quit attitude and has overcome adversity in his personal life as a kid and has translated that into a productive career in football.

The Bucs are very excited to have Jones on their team and know he will make them a better football team.

In other Bucs news the team announces they have come to a deal with Free agent LB Kevin Burnett.

Burnett was a 2nd round pick in the 2005 draft by the Cowboys. Burnett has played for Dallas, San Diego, Miami and Oakland. Burnett has a lot of experience and can get to the QB . Burnett will help the Bucs younger OLB's Dakota Watson and Lavonte David develop. Burnett brings a hard nose attitude with him and the Bucs were very pleased to see him on the waiver wire.
Burnett has 529 tackles, 17.5 sacks, 4 interceptions, 7 forced fumbles and 3 touchdowns on his career resume to date.
To make room for Burnett the team released kicker Lawrance Tynes.
Welcome to Tampa Bay Kevin Burnett
