With 6 defensive starters having 1yr or less of NFL experience, the Bucs faithful did not have much faith in the defense being any better than average this year. But the feeling in the locker room was much different and showed on the field in this Week 1 divisional match-up vs Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers.

The "Madden Gods" would not do the offenses any favors in this game as a monsoon commenced to rain down on the field during the entire game. The Panthers received the opening kickoff and commenced to drive down the field. The drive would be capped off by a 30yd FG by Graham Gano.

The Bucs offense would mount a drive of their own but scoring hopes were dashed when Panthers FS Tre Boston would jump a Kyler Barnes pass in the endzone and haul in the interception. The Bucs defense would stand strong however and force the Panthers to punt.

The Bucs offense would later drive into FG range but first year kicker Zachery Wooten would severely shank the FG attempt in howling winds. The Bucs defense would make the play of the game, when against a full-out blitz QB Cam Newton tried to hit a receiver on a quick pass but Bucs SS Mark Barron would read the throw and pick off the pass and race 50yds for the pick 6.

The Bucs defense would continue to give Newton fits for the remainder of the game, sacking him 6 times, 3 by DT Gerald McCoy. CB Alterraun Verner would also pick off Cam Newton and set-up the game sealing TD, when Barnes would find WR Chris Owusu for the 14yd TD pass.
