Everything seemed to fall into place this season for Cal. Only die hard Cal fans had BCS title aspirations after 3 seasons of meritocracy under coach JFOSH. The schedule came out and was extremely favorable to the Bears. All their big conference games were at home UCLA, UW, and Stanford. After they got past Pitt on the road they knew they had home court advantage the rest of the way.

Despite the short falls over the last 3 seasons Cal has been able to dominate the Golden Axe game against Stanford. Winning the last 3 in a row. Stanford had a new coach in BBJ. BBJ was a familiar opponent from his USC days. Either way this was not going to be an easy game against a very able Stanford squad and coach.

This was not a 5 wide shoot out that’s been the rage throughout the country. There was rain, mud, and win. Guys needed to double tape for this one. Stanford set the tone in this game playing aggressive run stopping defense. Cal’s rushing offense was virtually no existent in this one.

Stanford struck first on an 8 play drive that gave them the lead 7-0. Cal responded with a drive of their own. But couldn’t reach the end zone and turned the ball over on a fumble. Stanford capitalized with another nice drive pushing its lead to 14-0. Both of these teams were grinding it out in the rain. Cal’s first score came after a 12 play drive to cut the lead in half. Stanford wanted to control the ball with the lead and the 2nd quarter winding down. They accomplished that putting together a 12 play drive that finished at the Cal 3 yard line. Stanford had a choice to kick a FG and go up by 10 at half with Cal set to get the ball in the second half. BBJ opted to go for a TD on the last play of the half giving up the FG. Luck’s pass hit an open receiver in the back of the end zone but he couldn’t come down inbounds.

The second half the teams traded punts on drives that took most of the third quarter. Cal was able to punch it on a 6 yard jump ball to Freshman wide out Darrell Richardson. Richardson’s catch tied the game at 14 a piece in the 4th quarter. Stanford responded and drove deep into Bear territory. Luck was rushed by the defense pressure and tried to hit his target to soon or the pass did not have enough touch but was scooped up for an interception. Cal worked its playbook and got into position for a 43 yard FG and missed (there was a 9 MPH wind) the kick. Game still tied Stanford came right back with nice runs and passes and made its way inside the Cal 10 yard line. A big 3rd down was coming up with a 1:30 seconds left in the game. Cal had a hunch a pass was coming and dropped 9 into coverage on a Velcro call. The MLB took the 1st read away and Luck went to the crossing route in the back of the end zone. The FS stepped in and made a nice play for the pick and gave Cal the ball after the touchback.

The Bears had the 1:30 left and used it all as it made its way down the field in hurry up mode. With 1 timeout remaining Cal was trying to center the ball for a final FG attempt a draw play put Cal into the end zone with only 4 seconds to go securing the undefeated regular season and Pac 10 title.

Player of the game had to be TE Jeremy Poe. Poe was open every time Cal needed him to be. He brought in 9 catches many in traffic. Cal also played a quarter stretches were it needed to rely on the back up QB and HB. We were glad to see them return in the 4th for the final drive.

    Great win for JFosh.

BBJ is finding T1 more difficult than he probably thought it would be.
