2011 CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS GAME SUMMARIES
WEEK TEN: CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS (4-6) (2-5) AT #13 STANFORD CARDINAL (7-3) (6-2)"THE BIG GAME"
OVERRATED? Cal Destroys #13 Stanford, 40-7
The California Golden Bears and head coach Jeff Tedford split ways after Cal started the season with an abismal 4-6 record. This opened the door for new head coach Bud Light. "This team is loaded with explosive players and lots of talent. I'm surprised they were struggling so much earlier in the season," said coach Light at a team press conference. This is Light's first head coaching job, but it seems like he knows what he is doing. In his first game as the head coach of the Golden Bears, his team demolished the #13th ranked Stanford Cardinal, 40-7. On the opening drive of the game, QB Andrew Luck would make a bad read, and threw the ball right into the hands of Cal's Josh Hill. On the next play, HB Isi Sofele took the ball up the middle, and would go 35 yards untouched into the endzone. Stanford answered back with what would be their only score of the game, on a 17 yard pass from Luck to HB Stepfan Taylor. Then on the first play of the ensuing drive, Sofele took the handoff, broke a few tackles and scored his second touchdown of the game. The Golden Bears then added three field goals with lengths of 33, 43, and 21 by K Giorgio Tavecchio. Stanford really wanted to come out of the half strong and gain some momentum. But Sofele would have none of that, as he returned the second half's opening kickoff 102 yards for another Golden Bears touchdown. The Golden Bears then added another field goal by Tavecchio, and a touchdown pass from QB Zach Maynard to WR Marvin Jones.

Arizona State Sun Devils
WEEK ELEVEN: CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS (5-6) (3-5) AT ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS (6-5) (4-4)
SHOOTOUT IN THE DESERTCAL OUTLASTS ASU, 42-35
CLASSIC SCORE: 984 PTS
Maynard hits Jones in the back of the endzone for the game winning touchdown.
Following a confident win over #13 Stanford, California came into this game with lots of momentum. But Arizona State put up a great fight as the Golden Bears outlasted the Sun Devils, 42-35. Arizona State drew first blood, scoring on a 53 yard bomb from QB Brock Osweiler to WR Gerrell Robinson. Cal began to drive down field, but QB Zach Maynard would throw an interception, leading to another Arizona State touchdown. But Maynard would bounce back and throw a beautiful 20 yard touchdown pass to WR Coleman Edmond. After a ASU three and out, Cal got the ball back and HB Isi Sofele broke free on a 34 yard touchdown run. Arizona State didn't lose any momentum though, as Osweiler drove his team down field, and eventually scored on a 6 yard keeper. Maynard came out onto the field on the ensuing drive with great confidence, and would drive his team 70 yards in a little more than a minute to tie the game going into halftime. During the drive Sofele got hit hard and would later be diagnosed with an Abdominal strain which will make him miss the next two weeks. The third quarter was very defensive oriented as the only score would come with 3 minutes left in the game, on a 5 yard pass from Osweiler to WR TJ Simpson. On the ensuing drive, Maynard would complete a pass to WR Marvin Jones, taking the ball inside the 5. The Arizona State defense would then stuff Cal three straight plays forcing a 4th down. Coach Light elected to go for it, and it would turn out to be a great idea as HB CoVaughn DeBoskie would get into the endzone to tie the game. But on the ensuing kickoff, Arizona State's Omar Bolden would break free and score on a 101 yard touchdown run. Cal wouldn't back down though, and DeBoskie would tie the game for the Golden Bears on a 26 yard touchdown rush. After a three and out by the Sun Devils, Maynard would successfully drive his team down field, and would hook up with Jones in the back of the endzone for the game winning touchdown. Arizona State got one more chance but it was taken away thanks to an interception by FS DJ Campbell. (pictured below) With this win the Golden Bears become bowl eligible with a .500 record, and hopefully will receive a bowl bid.
