California Golden Bears 2012 Season Preview
The Bears and new head coach Max Zager are going into the new season with optimism. The team has been underachievers in the past few season, but this year they hope to finally live up to their potential. There is no doubt that this squad has the talent to do some damage this year. There is a good mix of young and old and if everyone can do their job, this team could be special.
The offense is going to be a good one. They are led by junior, All-American candidate Keenan Allen, who should have a great year and strike fear in every defense he faces. The rest of the receiving core is extremely young, but there is some good talent there and as the season progresses this receiving unit should grow into a top class unit. The man responsible for getting those guy the ball is Kevin Maynard. Maynard has some good talent and good experience being a senior. He should be able to have a good season and him and Allen should turn into a great duo. The running back spot has a great talent there as well. Isi Sofele is a very good back and with the threat of Allen in the passing game, he should have plenty of space to run. The men responsible for opening up the lanes for Sofele is led by RT Matt Summers-Gavin. Gavin is a very good tackle and he leads a pretty strong offensive line, they surely won't blow anyone away, but they won't be an issue either.
The defense is definitely the question mark on the team. It is a young group and all around not as talented as the offensive unit is. The strengths of the defense include run defense, the secondary and outside linebacker. The weaknesses include a proven pass rusher and the inside linebacker position. Cal runs a 3-4 defense, they are going into their fourth season running this scheme so things should really start to click this year. I'd look out for DeAndre Coleman on the defensive line, he had a good year last year and should only improve this coming season. Linebacker could be an issue for this defense, some younger guys are definitely going to need to step up. As far as the secondary goes, that probably is this defenses strength. Starting corner, Marc Anthony is a big time player and will cover the opposing teams best receiver, he could should a great year.
