\|\ CAL KNOTCHES A SPOT IN THE TOP 25 /|/

After stumbling out the gates with a 2-4 start with losses to lowly foes like Fresno State and Army the 2011 season looked bleak for the Golden Bears. Coach IrishBearcat asked the fans to hang in there and stressed how it would take some time through with a change in culture, implentation of new schemes, and recruiting. Talks of the Coach being on the "hot-seat" in his first season were heating up.

Cal eventually hit it's stride and went on to win 5 straight games with wins over #17 Oregon State and #10 Stanford. The upset rivalry win over the Cardinal really boosted the morale around the football program. A bowl bid is locked up, and the Golden Bears still have an outside shot to win the North and earn a bid to the Pac-12 Championship game.

The recruiting class is shaping up nicely with 18 commitments already locked down in the midst of season one. Coach IrishBearcat's first class currently ranks amongst the best in the nation with some experts tabbing it as a top 10 recruiting class. A strong finish with a win over ASU and a bowl bid would really give the program much needed momentum and excitement going into the 2nd season of Coach IrishBearcat's tenure as head ball coach.

\|\ARROW POINTING UP FOR GOLDEN BEARS/|/
[IMG]
After a tumultuous start to begin his tenure Coach IrishBearcat was able to find a way to end his first season on a positive note. The 2011 season was filled with peaks and valleys for the Golden Bears. Early losses to the likes of Army and Fresno State had the fan base already questioning the hire. Cal would claw back rebounding from a loss to fuzzyl0gic and his Huskies by upsetting a top 10 Oregon team in Autzen Stadium.
A sharp valley would follow the highest peak of the season as California laid an egg against USC. The Trojans embarassed Cal 9-42 on their home turf. Clashing in triple overtime with Oshiomogho's Utes IrishBearcat and his squad dodged a 2-5 hole and improved to 3-4. The momentum would lead Cal to victory over future Pac-12 champs UCLA (-Cougars-), Washington State, Oregon State (MNoffke), and top 10 Stanford.
With a chance at an 8-4 record after a 2-4 start the Golden Bear's would run out of luck against the Sun Devils. ASU and CoachRedd outplayed California in a stunner to knock them out of the top 25. A Hyundai Sun Bowl bid against NC State would set the tone for the off-season with Cal escaping in dramatic fashion 23-21 on 35 yard field goal flying wide right.
The bowl momentum carried over on the recruiting trail as Cal nabbed the top recruiting class in the Pac-12. California fans were given a real treat on National Signing Day when ESPNU150 SS Michael Cook surprisingly announced his commitment to the Golden bears. The class featured several blue-chip recruits, and rumblings about some having the potential to start have already begun. IrishBearcat's squad also snuck into the top 25 to end the season at #25.

\|\HEISMAN FRONT-RUNNER RB ISI SOFELE BOUNCES BACK FROM INJURY/|/
[IMG]

Cal RB Isi Sofele suffered several broken ribs in the 1st quarter of the Washington game. He was projected to be out for at least 6 weeks. His dedication and hard work during rehab enabled him to start for the Armed Forces Bowl game. He ended up rushing for 222 yards and 4 touchdowns in his final game as a Golden Bear.

"I was determined to find a way to get ready for the bowl game," said Sofele, "I did not want my injury in the Washington game end up being my last play as a college football player."

The standout senior runningback was the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, and was still invited to the award Ceremony even though he missed the last 3 weeks to impress voters. He ended up in 2nd place, which says a lot about his performance during the 2012 season. He ended up with 1699 total yards, 6.2 ypc average, and 22 rushing touchdowns.

"He'll be sorely missed," said Coach IrishBearcat, "He has set the standard for the RB position at Cal, it will be up to players back to carry on torch of leading our football team.

Coach IrishBearcat heads into his 4th season at the helm of the Golden Bears. Cal will look to crash the Pac-12 CCG for the first time in his tenure. A 9-4 squad that lost only 6 players to graduation looks poised to accompish that goal. It will be vital for RB Justin Goode replace the production of RB Trajuan Briggs. Coach IrishBearcat has stressed how it will be critical to become a balanced offense in order to compete for the Pac-12 crown. Defensively the Golden Bears return 9 starters from a unit that ranked in the top 20 of every defensive category. The defense lead Cal last season, and should perform even better if the offense can improve as expected. Often times the Golden Bear defense was pressured into carrying the team due to the lack of offense.
OFFENSE: The star of the offense is expected to be RB Justin Goode. A back that boasted over 900 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns as a backup will finally get the load as the number 1 back for a full season. Cal will need backup RB Bigelow to really step up and help maintain effectiveness of the two RB system Coach IrishBearcat has run since his arrival. QB Kyle Boehm returns after finally playing well near the end of the season. The passing game will be looked to be vastly improved, and one reason for optimism is the receiving core. Kaelin Clay returns as the top WR along with Aaron Kirk and Matt Johnson. Look for this unit to be improved overall, especially in the turnover department.
DEFENSE: The defense really shined in stopping the run and ended the regular season with the #1 rushing defense. The entire defensive line returns and is lead by all-american DT Viliami Moala. MLB Nick Forbes will attempt to replace defensive MVP Steve Fanua who totaled 7 interceptions on the season. Both OLB Gibson and Wilkerson return after a solid season as well as impressively picking up their level of play down the stretch. The secondary returns star SS Micahel Cook and FS Nick Foley. The corners were young last season but as a unit have turned out to be a nice group with progression. Berkeley has a lot to be excited about on the defensive side of the ball.
PREDICTION: The Golden Bears will win at least 10 games this season, and finally knotch a bid to the CCG. Whether they win or not will depend on the opponent, injuries, and development of the Pac-12 teams throughout the season.

CAL SEASON PREVIEW: CAN BIGELOW & GOLDEN BEARS
REPEAT AS NATIONAL CHAMPIONS?

RB Brendon Bigelow rushes for a 41 yard touchdown in the BCS National Championship Game

[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
SR RB Brendon Bigelow
SR QB Kyle Boehm SR DT Mustafa Jalil

OFFENSE: California's offense boasts 7 returning starters and should be a strong unit. Filling the shoes of RB Justin Goode and WR Kaelin Clay will be key for the Golden Bears to continue to improve from last season's productive numbers. QB Kyle Boehm returns after playing a major role in leading Cal to a National Championship. He passed for over 2400 yards, had 25 TDs to 14 interceptions, and was able to maintain a 57% completion rating. The runningbacks took a huge blow with the loss of Goode, but HB Brendon Bigelow showed flashes all year and had his best performance during the NC against South Carolina. WR Clay was a huge playmaker last season for Cal and will be missed, but the WR Unit as a whole should be better. Expect the offensive line to be slightly improved as well.
DEFENSE: The Golden Bear defense returns only 3 starters but still should be a stout group overall. The defensive line and secondary will be strengths while the linebacking core will feature a new starter at each position. DT Mustafa Jailil is an All-American and experienced veteran who will provide much needed leadership to a young defense. The defensive ends also possess new starting bodies but both Barr and Scarlett are more talented than their former teammates. The entire linebacking core is being replaced, with OLB Jason Gibson the biggest loss. Overall the new group is much more athletic and has much more potential that should bring a lot of excitement to the defense. The secondary lost 3 starters but should be just as good or even better. Robinson and Williams will finally get their chances to start after sitting behind Coley and Cook for most of their careers.
PREDICTION: California will be hard-pressed to repeat as National Champions, but they do have the potential to take off if the youth and experience on defense finds their way quicker than expected. Coach IrishBearcat once again has the team with the least amount of holes, and should expect a 10 win season and to be in contention for the North Division all the way down to the final week of conference play. The Golden Bears will sneak into the CCG and depending on their opponent will be in position to win their first Pac-12 title under Coach Irish.

CAN RB SHAUN YOUNG LEAD CAL
TO A CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP?
Cal enters 2016 after failing to defened their National Championship from 2014. Despite a dissapointing season with several upsets, the season wasn't so bad for a down year that forced many new starters to play. Those young starters now have a year of experience under their belt, and Cal's defense looks to have reloaded back to a National Championship caliber squad.
The biggest question entering the season: Who will replace RB Brendon Bigelow? His 30 touchdowns and 2000 yards rushing will be sorely missed. California has be coined as "Running Back U" and this season they live up to their name by replacing a star with even better talent. RB Shaun Young returns after a 10 touchdown season as a backup, as well as speedster Brenton Smith who is very explosive.
QUARTERBACKS
Usually when you gradute a three year starter you see a dropoff in production and talent, but this won't be the case for the Golden Bears. SR Kyle Boehm graduated with an up and down career plagued by accuracy issues and turnovers. SR QB Marlon Davis replaces Boehm, and Coach IrishBearcat has praised Davis as "even better" than Boehm. Davis could be the answer to finally give Cal some consistency with the passing attack. RS FS Dan Larsen, one of the most heralded quarterback recruits in his class, is rumored to have his own package and may see some time during games to keep the defense on their toes.
RUNNINGBACKS
RB Shaun Young will begin the season as a starter, but backup Brenton Smith will be hard to keep off the field with his explosiveness. Young is one of the stronger RBs in the country, and initiates contact with his size. He has the speed to get outside and break the big runs as well. Smith has showed incredible explosiveness during spring ball. Coach IrishBearcat mentioned that Smith reminded him a lot of Heisman Winner Reggie Bush. Cal's running game should be potent as always, but will it maintain the top rushing attack in the country once again?
RECEIVERS
Only 4 receivers on the roster return from last season, but depth was upgraded in a big way during the off-season with the commitment of three :5stars: wide receivers. Dwayne Anderson and Chip Curry will replace Seniors Matt Johnson and Aaron Kick from last season. Anderson is more of a balanced receiver who can make big plays catching the football. Curry was awarded 1st All-American Returner entering the pre-season but will finally break the startering linup as a WR. Nick Green will man the slot position. He lacks elite speed but runs the best routes and catches the football better than anyone on the entire team. Sophomore TE David Frederick's 6'8 frame, great blocking, and ability to break tackles has many NFL analysts comparing him to Cowboy's TE Jason Witten. His presense will make the Golden Bear's offensive attack very dynamic.
DEFENSIVE LINE
The defensive line graduated three starters but should be even better with talented back-ups finally breaking the startering lineup. DE Marquis Stewart is a bigtime playmaker even as a sophomore. JUCO DE Drew Miller walked on campus as the starter and should provide another quality body to rush the passer with his speed. DT Vic Roberson played defensive end last season, but his strength and big body made him the perfect fit for the position change. He will start as the #1 DT this season. One of the strongest players on the entire team, Kevin West, will man the other DT spot.
LINEBACKERS
After graduating all linebackers from the previous season all three return for 2016. OLB Marcus Jackson seized a starting roll immediately last season as a freshman and wreaked havoc on offenses with his size, speed, coverage, and tackling abilities. Impact MLB Randall Evans returns after splitting time with MLB Ryan Cook from last season. Both will be used in a similar 1A/1B fashion during 2016. Sam Rowe mans the other OLB spot but could see time split between himself and OLB Will Johnson.
SECONDARY
Both CBs graduated, but CB Jordan Moore and CB Ryan Kearney bring even more talent and athleticism to the team. Cal's first :5stars: commit of Coach IrishBearcat's tenure, Brett Woods, will start at the Nickel position. Both safeties return from last season. FS William Steven and SS Julian Robinson are athletic safeties, and their off-season work should make the unit one of the best in the entire country.
PREDICTION
California is arguably the most talented team in the entire conference. Last's season the youth of the defense was exposed, but the Golden Bear D will improvely vastly. The offense will continue to hum, and the team will push Coach IrishBearcat to his first CCG since arriving in Berkeley as the head coach.

PAC-12 CHAMPION CAL COMES UP SHORT IN
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AGAINST BAMA
[IMG]
Cal ended the season with an 11-3 record after a 24-38 loss to Alabama in the National Championship
After a 9-4 2015 campaign not many pundits were picking the California Golden bears to even win their conference. Coach IrishBearcat stressed the importance of making it to the Pac-12 Championship Game and having a shot to win the conference title. Despite winning a National Championship the head coach has not earned conference title since arriving in Berkeley. The 2016 season proved to have many successes as well as a handful of failures.
GOLDEN BEARS HIT THE GROUND RUNNING
To open the season Cal hosted Illinois and exploded in the opener with a 40-14 victory. Breaking out by rushing for over 125 yards on 6 carries was RB Brenton Smith. His effort raised eye brows around the country and the tandem helped proper the team to five straight victories. The five contests tallied a score averaging a 32-14 victory for the Golden Bears. Win included a 30-13 victory over the reigning National Champion Auburn Tiger Football Team, a defeat of rival Oregon State and Coach Noffke on the road 35-20, and a 17-10 victory over rival Southern California.

DUCKS AND CARDINAL POSE PROBLEMS
Coming of a bye week California hosted a Oregon squad with a losing record. The Ducks came out firing and completely catching the Golden Bears off guard. Oregon amassed a 24-0 early lead and forced 5 interceptions on QB Marlon Davis. The quarterback had entered the game without throwing a single pick on the season. Cal was able to come back and make it a game but ultimately fell short in a 24-30 loss. After falling to 5-1 the team showed a lot of maturing by stringing together another four game win streak. Wins included Arizona State, over rival UCLA and Coach Cougars, Washington State, and a win over the Washington Huskies. Rival Stanford entered Cal's home turf and left them stunned by handing the Golden Bears their second loss in a 21-28 defeat.
CAL AND IRISHBEARCAT EARN FIRST CONFERENCE TITLE
Cal entered it's season finale against a Utah squad playing the role of spoiler. A Golden Bears loss would put the team at risk of not making it to the conference Championship game. There was also a slim shot at a National Championship to play for with only two losses. California snuck away with a 28-21 victory to finish the season with an 10-2 record and clinched the North Division title. The game featured a road trip to faceoff against an 11-1 Colorado squad. Cal played lights out and won their first Pac-12 Championship since IrishBearcat's tenure began in Berkeley. The win propelled the Golden Bears to #2 in the BCS rankings and set them up to go head to head with Alabama for all the marbles.
LETHARGIC START ENDS WITH CHAMPIONSHIP LOSS TO BAMA
Not long after the fireworks started California found themselves trailing in the National Championship game 0-17 in the second quarter. After finally picking some yardage up on the ground Cal was able to force their way into the end zone to cut the deficit to ten points at half. Despite a surge in the fourth quarter that improved the score to 24-31 the Golden Bears defense whiffed on a run and gave up a big touchdown. The team ultimately lost 24-38 to Alabama. The loss stung, but did not take away the special season California put together for the 2016 college football season.

GOLDEN BEARS SET SIGHTS ON ALL
THE MARBLES FOR 2017 SEASON
[IMG]
Heisman Contender Shaun Young (RB - 93 OVR) will lead Cal's quest for a National Championship
California, the reigning Pac-12 Champions, will enter this season coming off a dissapointing loss in the National Championship to the Alabama Crimson Tide. An 11-3 season was highlighted by Coach IrishBearcat's first Pac-12 Championship Game victory 38-0 over Colorado and a surprise bid to play in the BCS National Championship Game. It was the second time Cal earned a bid to the National Championship as a two-loss football team. No FBS Head Coach had ever lead a program to the big dance with two losses as NCAA History was re-written.

The 2017 Golden Bears football team possesses the best talent and depth that of any previous IrishBearcat squad. Here's a closer look at the California team by position:
QUARTERBACKS
The quarterback positions consists of one of the most exciting position battles for Season 7. QB Seth Fritz (87 Overall, 90 THP, 96 THA, 59 SPD) is a pocket passer with a NFL-caliber arm. The Senior QB would seem to be the most logical choice to start but his lack of mobility could pose problems. Sophomore QB Dan Larsen (86 Overall, 89 THP, 85 THA, 89 SPD & ACC, 91 AGI, 95 ELU) has a very solid arm but brings a lot more athleticism and game-breaking ability to the table. Don't be surprised if either starts or a combination of the two are both used during the upcoming season.

RUNNINGBACKS
The RB position is one of the deepest positions on the roster. Five runningbacks rated at least 83 overall fill the position with great depth and a variety of skill. SR RB Shaun Young (93 OVR, Impact Player) will lead the way and is an early contender to win the Heisman Trophy. Young is on of the most-talented backs in the entire country with his ability to run defenders over. He also has just enough speed to make him a threat outside and keep the front seven honest. Backup RB Brenton Smith (86 OVR) will also receive a handful of carries for his amazing speed and and ability to change direction (94 SPD, 99 AGI, 97 ACC). Smith created some Heisman buzz of his own during the early part of last season.

TIGHT ENDS & RECEIVERS
California returns their top three receivers and top two tight ends from the previous season. WR Dwayne Anderson (87 OVR) was the first Cal WR of the IrishBearcat tenure to haul in at least 10 touchdown passes in a single season. Anderson's isn't the fastest receiver but he is reliable and has a knack for beating the defense over the top. WR Anthony Carpenter (84 OVR) returns at the other outside WR spot after a solid performance as a first-time starter. SR WR Nick Green (87 OVR) is the most talented of the bunch and boasts the best hands on the entire football team. Green will start in the slot position due to his 5'11 stature. TE David Frederick (85 OVR) returns after providing great blocking on the edge as well as a huge target downfield with his frame and size (6'8 266 lbs). SR TE John Clarke (83 OVR) provides a better receiving option at the TE spot.

OFFENSIVE LINE
The offensive line returns only two starters but several talented back ups will get their chance to step in and shine this season. The starting offensive line has always been geared towards running the football, but this season's O-Line is definitely a great pass-blocking offensive line. This could change how the Golden Bears attack opponents with their offense. The line is also the most talented across the board since Coach IrishBearcat's arrival (LT 87 , LG 89, C 87, RG 82, RT 84 OVR respectively).\

DEFENSIVE LINE
All four starters from last season return on the defensive line. DE Marquis Stewart (87 OVR) and DE Drew Miller (84 OVR) combined for 16 sacks on the previous season. DT Vic Roberson (85 OVR) leads the group as the best at his position. DT Kevin West (84 OVR) returns as an All-American for his senior season. This group pressured the quarterback, accumulated sacks, created a bunch of turnovers, and created a lot of havoc for offenses last season. The ceiling for this group is through the roof.

LINEBACKERS
All-American OLB Marcus Jackson (89 OVR) leads one of the most talented linebacking units in the entire country. Jackson lead the Cal defense in total tackles during 2016. Manning the other OLB spot is OLB Will Johnson (87 OVR). His ability to accelerate off the snap and track down ball carriers (98 ACC, 92 PUR) makes him a special player. Former OLB and now MLB Same Rowe (87 OVR) will replace Ryan Cook who bolted early for the NFL. This group, coupled with the defensive line, heads one of the most talented and experienced front seven's in all of college football.

DEFENSIVE BACKS
The Golden Bear secondary returns a lot of talent. SR Captain CB Jordan Moore (87 Overall) has locked down one of the outside CB spots as a returning starter. CB Brett Woods (86 OVR) and CB Bubba Luke (83 OVR) will battle for the other outside spot with the other holding down the nickel CB position. FS Arnold Campbell (82 Ovr) will take over to replace William Stevens. SS Julian Robinson (89 OVR) returns for his senior season after contemplating leaving early for the NFL. The secondary is the head of a defense that looks to have one of the most dominant lineups in the FBS.

Season Outlook & Prediction: It's tough to ignore the collection of talent, experience, and playmakers Cal has assembled over the past few seasons. The recruiting efforts of IrishBearcat have shown up on the field producing five bowls wins, two National Championship trips, a Conference Championship victory, and a National Championship victory. California should with the North Division and have a great shot to be the favorite heading into the CCG. A win could vault Cal back into the National Championship for redemption of last season's loss.
