    Cap hits...

We said they could release a player and not take a hit during the offseason.

my question is when do we cut that off?

imo, their chance was during the 3 days where the posted their cuts. IMO, from now on if they cut a player they take a hit. I dont think it fair that if they see they have driven up the price of a FA they can release a player for extra space.

    thoughts?

I agree nate. That is bull!! Something must be done of this. I think we should enforce this now! Give them the option to take back the cut or take a hit!!! That is if the players were signed last seaon!

Once free agency began (technically we are in week 1), cap hits are now official.

If you release players you signed in FA because of crazy prices, too damn bad. Cap hits aplenty for you.

I think the wise thing to do from the beginning is once you hit offseason. Cuts stop. If you have 80 points you can only spend 80 points you cannot go over that. Once the draft is over you can make your cuts. This will lower bidding on players. These 30 and 40 players is crazy. It should be just 20's for high 80's

The problem is that people I don't think are taking into account draft picks.

I had about 70 points to spend on FA with my 5 picks left after the trade. I figure I save 25 points for draftees, and 70 for FAs makes my 95 points under cap I was at.

Yea true. They are going to have to cut some good players! After the draft are we going to have to sign every draft picks?

I say yes, but they would be roster players, not free agents, if that makes sense.

well how about this. what about if you cut a player over the players minimum bid then you take a cap hit of his minimum bid. if the player was signed or was on your beginning roster as a regular minimum cap hit, then there is no hit.

    yea? nay?

I can live with that, I reckon. If you sign a free agent for the minimum, I really don't think you should get a cap hit if you cut that player, personally. If you oversign a player, though, I definitely see at least an overall minimum bid cap hit.

After seeing the huge values for free agents, though, I wonder if just the overall minimum bid as a cap hit for cutting that player is enough. Not suggesting we change anything, God forbid...lol...but just a thought for later in the year. I'll elaborate on this later if asked. :)

    Why not the reverse?

For example, let's say I sign a 96 overall (15 point cap hit) for 50 points. I cut him. I pay the difference between his contract and his minimum overall. 35 point cap hit.

Note that this would NOT work for the current FA timeframe. It's way too late for this severe a penalty, so this would be for year 3 and beyond. I wanted to make that very clear.

And yes, it is very severe. But it would definitely keep free agency prices down. Not that I'm complaining about the prices. It is most definitely entertaining! But they do borderline on the ridiculous, honestly.

Let me know what you think.

Like I said, though, it would have to wait at least until the offseason between season 2 and 3, and we would have to introduce it between the two.

It would not be fair to institute this after the crazy prices, but like I said, it would definitely keep prices down, especially on the lower tier players.

I was thinking about going for Q. Lawrence (one of my guys I loved in KC) but a 57 for TEN points? I realize that is what you gotta do to get the player, Nate, but I am sure you think it's ridiculous too. :) I would pay more than 10 for him if I didn't have my budget spent already. ;)

Dude he is AWESOME. If I could wiggle the cap space I would outbid you. He was my best receiver in KC and was in slot for me all year. He produced big time.

I needed a big receiver as well for Royal. But I hope I can land Bryant. I didn't want to pay 35 points, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Another idea for season 3 offseason stuff...

Madden doesn't allow you to cut below 45 players. So why do we allow the owners to cut below 45?

i dont think we do. i think things we learned is they cant cut below 45, and they can't cut players that leave them below minimum.

also here is the updated rule:
    i really like this idea

Well, with 7 picks per team, I think the minimum we should let them go to is 48 (max of 55 minus 7) players. But definitely not below 45.

well everyone is required to keep 53. so 53 minus 7 is 46. i think all teams should be required to keep at least 7 spots open for the sim of the draft for next offseason.
