Panthers win season opener against the Giants

    Charlotte, NC- Pepper Hicks Reporting

Football season is upon us once again and with that, the Panthers are back on the field. After 2 disappointing seasons a new QB in Matt Moore along with running back stud RB Jonathan Stewart and WR. Steve Smith back, the Panthers are looking to rebound and give the fans something to cheer for.

With week 1 in full swing, the Panthers traveled up to the New Giants Stadium to take on the New York Football Giants. Weather was rainy but that didn't slow down Deangelo Williams. On the Panthers opening drive Deangelo broke a 61 yard touchdown run to put the Panthers up a score.

Panthers Defense keep the pressure on Eli to make plays, while shutting down
Brandon Jacobs early. Panthers stopped the Giants first drive and forced them to punt the ball. With the ball back Panthers decided to try and run it right at the heart of that Giants Defense. Again Deangelo broke loose into the secondary and again went 61 yards to paydirt. I guess it was only fitting that the first game in the new Giants stadium there was 2 61 yard touchdowns. I'm sure Yankee fans at the game got the coincidence.

Up by 14 the Panthers Defense stimied the Giants and only gave up a FG in the 2nd. The Giants Defense also setted down afterwards and made sure to keep DeAngelo from breaking anymore big runs. At the half the Panthers led 14 to 3.

In the 2nd half the Giants started to wake up. Their first offensive drive they moved the ball well down the field. They converted some huge 3rd downs and tired the Panthers defense setting them up with their first TD of the game. Ahmad Bradshaw took a toss from 6 yards out and ran in untouched. the Giants pull with in 4, 14 - 10.

After being held scoreless for about 2 whole quarters, the Panthers on 3rd down found more offense. Matt Moore dumped off a screen pass to Jonathan Stewart and he did the rest going 49 yards to put the Panthers back up by 11.

With the ball back in the Giants hands Panthers needed a stop but everytime they thought they had them the Giants found away out of it. The Giants put together a painstaking drive that took up 4 minutes but felt more like 30 minutes. The Giants finally broke threw in the beginning of the 4th with Brandon Jacobs pounding over the goal line with a 1 yard TD. After the extra point once again the Panthers lead was only 4 and there was still a whole quarter left to be played.

The Panthers with a lot of time to kill panthers needed to keep the ball out of Eli's hands. With some huge completions to Rookie WR. Lafell and some dump offs to Tony Fiammetta, the Panthers kept the clock running with first downs. Just like what the Giants did to them the twice in the game, the Panthers kept the drive alive killing almost the whole 4th Quarter. Once in FG range Panthers kept the ball on the ground and was successful at doing so. Once getting to about the 5 yard line the Panthers drive stopped and Kicker John Kasay came in to give the Panthers a 7 point lead with just over 2 minutes left. From 23 yards out Kasay hit the left up right and bounce through. Wait a minute though the Zebras say "NO GOOD" Giants ball.

On the Giants previous offensive drive DE. Charles Johnson got Carted off and was later found out to be a partial PCL tear and will miss 7 weeks. With out there top Defensive end the Panthers needed someone to step up and make a play. After a big gain in the first couple plays on the Giants drive, Eli had his team around mid-field, put with 3 straight plays of Eli trying to go to his #1 WR Larry Fitzgerald failed Panthers need just 1 more stop. On fourth down Eli tried to go to his other favorite target, Jeremy Shockey but the Panthers D was right there to knock the ball down. Panthers hanged on for the win and start the year off on the right foot.

    A Look Ahead: Week 2
    by Reece Crenshaw
    Blogger, Charlotte Observer

After a impressive win on the road the Panthers will host (0-1) Tampa Bay in Week 2. Panther split with Tampa last season, beating Tampa 20 to 14 at Bank of America Stadium. Coach Claven and his team will be hoping to do the same and improving their record to (2-0). Week 1 wasn't as giving to the Buccaneers who got thrashed by the Browns 42 to 13. Young QB Freeman threw 4 ints and gave up 182 yards rushing to Jerome Harrison. With RB's DeAngelo Williams, who ran for 176 and Jonathan Stewart, who scored on a 49 yard screen pass. The Panthers will look to do more of the same. Pressuring Freeman will also be a priority and after DE. Charles Johnson's PCL tear, it's going to be up to Tyler Brayton to fill his shoes for the next 7 weeks.

The Panthers will need this win if they want to keep pace with the Saint or even the Falcons, who looked impressive with their Week 1 win over the Steelers 31 to 30. One player to keep our eyes on is QB Matt Moore, who got the start Week 1 instead of Rookie QB Jimmy Clausen. I asked Coach Claven about this move and Whether Jimmy could see any real playing time. Coach Claven had this to say. "I was real impressed with Matt's play on Sunday, he made one mistake but made some big plays when we needed them. Going into Sunday I wasn't sure who I was going to start behind Center and evening going into week 2, I'm not completely certain who will be taking the snaps." I then asked Coach Claven if that meant Jimmy Clausen was getting the start against the Buccaneers, but he just turn away and said "No comment". I guess we will have to wait and see but with Matt Moore's 10 for 13 195 yards and 1 TD 1 Int performance I can't imagine Coach Claven would make the switch this early.

In closing, it's still to early to tell, but opening the season with a win is a step in the right direction. Hopefully playing at home the Panthers won't have any bad calls like the one on Kasay's 23 yard FG that was called no good. You can check the replay out yourself here. PRE-GAME INTERVIEW: LE. Greg Hardy
    Reece Crenshaw, reporting

"I'm here with Rookie Defensive End Greg Hardy. So how was the trip back home
    after your win last week?"

"It wasn't much different then the trip up to New York. We know that 1 win doesn't mean much in the OMFL."

"Yea, but a win in your first game as got to feel good. You even got on the field for a few plays after Charles Johnson went down."

"Ofcourse anytime you win it feels good, but right now I'm just want to go out there and help my team out as much as I can in CJ's absence."

"Do you expect more playing time this week with out Johnson being able to play?"

I've been working all week preparing with Tyler and EB. The coaches have been working with me too. So I'm sure I'll get to see quite a bit of action tonight."

"Do you think you guys can come away with a win tonight?"

"I think we can come away with a win every game, but to do so we need to play as a team. If our D can keep playing well and limit the big plays, hopefully our offense will do the rest."

"Well thank you for your time and good luck with tonights game."

    "Thank you"

"That was rookie Defensive End Greg Hardy. Don't forget to tune in tonight as the Panthers host the Buccaneers on Justin.tv it should be a good game between 2 division rivals. This is Reece Crenshaw signing off.

PANTHERS WIN HOME OPENER, IMPROVE TO 2 - 0

    Charlotte, NC- Pepper Hicks Reporting

After winning week 1, the Panthers traveled back home to take on division rival Tampa. Since the Falcons loss to the Cardinals already and win could but them a top the division early. (Though the Saints still have to play their game.) With out starting LE Charles Johnson the Panthers defense needed to step up and give their offense a chance to win the game.

Panthers won the toss and received, but their opening drive the Tampa D swarmed and allowed nothing on the ground. Panthers were forced to punt. Later in the 1st quarter the Buccaneers drew first blood with a 3 yard O. O'Neal TD run. With the ball back the Panthers just couldn't get anything going againt the Tampa defense.

The 2nd quarter was more of the same. Panthers offense look terrible just not able to run or pass the ball very well. After a fumble by Deangelo Williams the Buccaneers managed a 23 yard FG. to lead 10 to 0.

Then on the very next possession Panthers offense started to churn. DeAngelo broke a 83 yard TD run. Then after stopping Tampa on their following drive, Panthers QB Matt Moore found Rookie WR. Brandon Lafell in the back corner of the end zone. It was a 29 yard strike and Lafell with some nice footwork, kept his feet inbounds for the score. unfortunately John Kasay chunked the extra point. so going into the Half Panthers now led by 3, 13 to 10.

In the 3rd quarter both defenses play well. only allowing each other 1 FG a piece. First Kasay with a 51-yarder to extend the Panthers lead to 6, but Barth cut it back with a 18-yarder at the end of the 3rd.

In the 4th and was anybodies game but neither team seem to be able to do much. Late in the 4th the Panthers did manage a to put together a nice drive moving the ball down the field and taking alot of time off the clock. They then broke deep inside the redzone forcing the Buccs to use the rest of their timeouts. Then DeAngelo broke their backs with a 4 yard TD run to put the Panthers ahead by 10 and seemly win the game.

With only 2 minutes left the Buccaneers needed to work fast and thats what they did. They were able to move the ball well throwing underneath and having plenty of room to get out of bounds to stop the clock. With 1 minute left on the clock A. Freeman fired a beautiful pass in the back corner of the endzone just barely out the reach of the Panthers defender, who tried to swat the ball and Mike Williams used his height and brought the ball in for 6 points.

After the extra point, Tampa lined up for the onside kick down by 3 with 1 minute left. The kick was solid but Panthers hung on to it and Matt Moore and the offense were able to kneel it out for the victory. The Final score was Panthers 23 the Buccaneers 20.

Back in the first quarter Panthers lost starting ROLB Thomas Davis for the game but Eric Norwood filled in nicely in his absence. Panther now at 2-0 and sit atop the NFC South awaiting the Saint/49ers result. Panthers will stay at home and host the 1-1 Cincinnati Bengals. It's not going to be easy
for the Panthers, as they will have to find a way to contain Carson Palmer. T.O, OchoCinco, and Cedric Benson. Also the Bengals managed to keep the ball for 24 minutes out of 32 in their last game, so the Panthers need to make sure their ready when they play.

Panthers Lose, Clausen gets playing time.

    Charlotte, NC- Pepper Hicks Reporting

The Panthers went into their week 3 game against the Bengals in a need to keep their winning ways alive. Unfortunately they were unable to do so. The Bengals were just to much for the Panthers to take.

After starting the game off with a TD to Steve Smith, Panthers and their fans we're going nuts. But it was short lived once the Bengals got the ball and moved the ball up and down the field with ease. Panthers still managed to hang in there and kept within 7 points going into halftime.

The 2nd half Bengals came with the knockout punch. Carson Palmer picked apart the Panthers Defense and his receivers were getting open and breaking tackles left and right. The 2nd half also saw Jimmy Clausen who came in for Matt Moore who had a solid first half 11/20 174 yards 1TD 1 INT. But Coach Claven went with the switch. Clausen did well at first even managed to throw a TD in his first NFL game, but by the end he had 3 ints.

The Bengals went on to beat the Panthers 38 to 17 giving the Panthers their first loss of the season. Deangelo Williams was held under 100 yards for the first time this season rushing just shy at 94 yards. The good news is the WR. Steve Smith finally got involved in the offense. After having 6 recs and 91 yards combined in the first 2 games, Smith add 5 recs, 114 yards and his first TD of the year to that total.

The Panthers at (2-1) now will have to go on the road the New Orleans to face the 3-0 Saints. Then coming back home to host the 3-0 Chicago Bears, who are just having a monster start to the season. Panthers need an upset against the Saints to get them back on track. The Panthers are 1-5 in the 6 games against the Saints and have lost 5 in a row.

Saints were just too much for the Panthers.

    Charlotte, NC- Pepper Hicks Reporting

Panthers traveled to the SuperDome for a much needed victory. Instead they found a Saints offense that just ran circles around them. With 3 offensive Touchdowns from 65, 67 & 76 yards, plus a 95 yard punt return of TD, the Saints just dominated the Panthers.

The Panthers managed to stay in the game somewhat with 2 int's that were taken back for 6. Steve Smith had a 2TD's himself on just 2 catches for
130 yards. Deangelo was held under 100 for the 2nd week in a row only getting 80 yards on 15 carries. J.Stewart helped out a bit with 51 yards on 6 carries.

Matt Moore did not look too impressive again this tough fast Saints D. He threw 2 int's and 1TD and was just 8/20 for 155 yards. Clausen came in on 1 play were he hooked up with Steve Smith for a 43 yard score. Beason once again led the team in tackles, and it just a beast for this Panthers Defense.

Panthers fall to 2-2 now after the 31 to 49 butt thumping by the Saints. The Panthers now come back home to face CaliBucc and the (4-0) Bears which will be no easy task. The Panthers need to come away with a upset if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Panthers outlast Bears, improve to 3-2.
    Charlotte, NC- Pepper Hicks Reporting

The Panthers sneak out a huge victory against the previously undefeated Bears. The weather was atrocious with 12mph winds and heavy rain the entire game. With that there were surprisingly no fumbles, though the Bears took heavy injuries through out the game. ROLB Pisa Tinoisamoa broke his collarbone and will miss 6 weeks and FB Jason Davis will miss 1 week with a dislocated elbow.

The game started with both defenses not allowing any room for either offense. At the end of the first quarter, Matt Moore found Steve Smith wide open for the touchdown. Smith made a incredible bobbled catch to give the Panthers the lead 7-0. With under 2 minutes left in the first half the Bears managed to put up 2 FG's to cut the lead to 1. (7-6)

The second half was more of the same, strong defense. Neither team giving up much. The Panthers were able to get in the redzone on a long pass to Steve Smith but the Bears D held and Matt Moore and company had to settle for the 3 points. Up 10 to 6 the Panthers D needed a big stop. They got something even better. Dan Connor dropped back in to coverage over the middle and picked off Jay Cutler to give the ball back to his offense. But then just a couple plays later Matt Moore gave it right back, throwing a stupid throw in tight coverage, which was picked off by CB. Tim Jennings, (who was in on the nickle because of the Injury to Zackary Bowman who was hurt and had to leave the game. Jennings returned the INT 74 yards for the score. The Bears missed the XP so their lead was on 2. (12-10)

In the 4th the Panthers drove down the field and once again penetrated the redzone. After getting down to the 2 yard line. The Bears stuffed the Panthers on 1st and 2nd down. On 3rd they handed the ball off again and D.Williams found the end zone from 3 yards out. Now up 17 to 12 the Panthers needed to stop Cutler and the Bears. The Bears managed 1 first down but were unable to keep the drive alive so with about 4 minutes left in the game, they punted the ball back to the Panthers. Panthers faced 3rd downs on this drive converting all 3. The first on was 3rd and 4 and a 9 yard pass to TE. Gary Barnidge got them the first, which forced the Bears to start spending timeouts. Then again on 3rd and 1, D.Williams powered his way for the first. One more time at 3rd and 4 and this J.Stewart provided the yardage for the first. Matt Moore then took a couple knees and the Panthers picked up their 3rd win of the season.

It's a big win for the Panthers who had lost 2 straight going into the game. With a bye week coming up they have some time to prepare before taking on the 49ers, another tough defense. At 3-2 the Panthers have something to be happy about.

Sneak Peek at Week 14: Falcons @ Panthers
    Reece Crenshaw, reporting

This week the Panthers host division rival Atlanta. A win could clinch the NFC South for the Panthers and would be one step closer to grabbing the #1 seed in the Playoffs. This will be Coach Claven's first time going up against Coach Sanano. In previous years these 2 teams were always in heated battles and the games went down to the wire. Though the Falcons are coming in at (5-7) the Panthers will need to on their game if they want to come away with a Win over this talented team. With Jon Beason still out for 2 more weeks, LB's Connor and Davis need to step up and contain Michael Turner. "You can't let him get going in a game. He just gets better with every yard gained." Dan Connor said about Michael Turner.
The Falcons come into this game (0-3) against the NFC South (2 of those losses coming at the hands of the Buccaneers.) The Carolina Panthers will also be without backup RB Jonathan Stewart, who is out with a torn Bicep. Mike Goodson as filled in well while he's been out though, racking up 138 yards on 32 attempts. "Goodson has shown great ability to break tackles and big up those first downs late in the game when we need them. He's also done a better job this year with securing the ball." said Coach Claven. Goodson also has 2 catches for 45 yards and 1 TD. The Panthers have already split with the Saints and the Buccaneers, winning at home both times. The Panthers need to keep playing their style of ball and they should be able to get a win for their home-town fans.
    Upcoming team schedules:
Panthers : vs Cardinals, @ Steelers, @ Falcons
Falcons: @ Seahawks, vs Saints, vs Panthers
    Key Performers:
    Panthers: QB. Matt Moore - 144/222 16ints 15Tds 2,375yards
    HB. DeAngelo Williams - 223atts 15Tds 1522yards/33recs 365yards

    Falcons Declaw the Panthers
    Reece Crenshaw, reporting

The Panthers offense racked up 435 yards to the Falcons 207, but still lost 34 to 24. Everything seemed to go wrong for the Panthers this day. DeAngelo Fumbled twice in the first half and Matt Moore threw a INT in the endzone on the Panthers first drive. (Thanks to a great user play by Obsidan.) Even with that the Panthers D kept the Falcons in check the whole first half. Falcons only managed 2 FG's before the half and the Panthers led 10 to 6 at the break. The 2nd half was a different story. Matt Moore became a turnover machine. (though it wasn't all his fault. A accidental button tap gave the Falcons D their 2nd Int) The next play Matt Ryan found Roddy White wide open in the endzone, due to blown coverage(Me choking again) Then it got even worse or Matt Moore as he got hit throwing twice which turned into defensive TD's for the Falcons. Not the way Coach Claven wanted the game to go. Panthers also had to play the 2nd half of the game without MLB Dan Connor and CB Richard Marshall. Still though, with the #1 seed in the NFC in grasp, the Panthers will host the Arizona Cardinals in their final home game of the season. "This is a must win for us." said Coach Claven in an interview earlier today. After the Cardinals the Panthers finish up the season on the road. First in Pittsburgh and then a re-match in Atlanta against the hated Falcons. If the Panthers can win there next 2 games they may not have to play their starters against the Falcons in the season Finale, though the way the Eagles have been playing they may have to if they want the home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Panthers will take on the Cardinals tonight @ 10:30 pm est.

Claven...we let this slide for the first week my man, but you need to be posting updates in here, not just a copy/paste of your game article. ;)

According to the Charlotte Gazette the Panthers have made an offer to ROLB Landon Johnson back to Carolina. Johnson played for the Panthers the last 3 season in the OMFL, before joining the Lions who quickly releases him after the Pre-season. The Panthers are in need of LB depth after losing 2 players in last nights game. Landon Johnson should fit in nicely off the bench since he already is familiar with the Defense. We expect to the Panthers will also announce the placement of Rookie ROLB Eric Norwood on the IR after suffering a fractured left foot. Norwood had 9 tackles in limited playing time this year.

Panthers announce signing of Landon Johnson
Panthers officially announced the signing of ROLB Landon Johnson just a little bit ago. Johnson will be back in teal and black after being out of work for the whole season.
It shouldn't take him long to fit right into 1 of the top defenses in the OMFL. Not long after being signed Landon was already at the Panthers practice facility working with the Defense. He is going to be expected to see some playing time in next weeks game. "Feels good to be back. I've missed playing over the past 11 months and just want to get back on the field. I'm just so grateful and thank God and the Panthers organization for giving me another chance to play the game I love." Thats what Landon Johnson said to Panthers team reporter Trisha Takanawa, just minutes after the signing announcement was made.

    THE OFFSEASON HAS BEGUN!
    by Reece Crenshaw
    Blogger, Charlotte Observer

Year 1 comes to an end and that Panther enter the offseason trying to build on their NFC SOUTH CHAMPIONS success. After losing in the NFC championship game, I talked to Coach Claven and he made it clear that the Organization will work on bettering the Offense going into Year 2. So far no big news has been released, though we have comfirmed that the Panthers have worked out a deal with the Rams that would send WR. Armanti Edwards to St.Louis for HB. Karmi Deji. Deji could provide greatly along side Mike Goodson, backing up DeAngelo if the Panthers can find a deal to ship Jonathan Stewart out. Stewart has said he's enjoyed his time here in Carolina, but He's ready to Carry a full load by himself. Also Kicker John Kasay has retired, leaving the Panthers with out a kicker. Kasay knocked home some crucial 56 yarders and his leg could be missed.

    WHO DIDN'T MAKE THE CUT
    by Reece Crenshaw
    Blogger, Charlotte Observer

Last night the Panthers made their Mandatory cuts and got their roster down to 48 players, as they gear up for the Draft. Among those cuts were FS. Sherrod Martin. With now 2nd year man Jordan Pugh playing well in Marins absence at the end of the season, Pugh now has the starting gig. Another cut was LOLB Thomas Davis, a huge surprise here. Along side Beason and Dan Connor, Davis help make this LB crew one of the best in the OMFL. I guess the Panthers liked what they saw in Rookie LB Eric Norwood last season, until he got hurt anyways. The 3rd and final Mandy, might be even more of a shocker. QB Matt Moore who led his team to the NFC Championship game. Atleast there will be no QB controversy in Carolina this season. It is not Jimmy Clasuens Team. The Panthers also cut DT Louis Leonard in order to get their roster down to 48 players.

In other new inside the Panthers, it looks like Jonathan Stewart may still be a Panther at the start of the season. Panthers Officials have gotten offers for Stewart, but said they haven't found a deal that they like.

    Coach Kahwajy Returns to OMFL
Charlotte, NC- “Nothing less than championship caliber play. I want nothing less.” The words Coach Kahwajy spoke to introduce himself to the Carolina Panthers and the Charlotte community. The Carolina Panthers and Coach Claven have decided to part ways, after a 5 year run that included a trip to the NFC Championship game just 2 seasons ago. And while Coach Claven will be missed , the mood at this morning’s press conference was of excitement. Coach Kahwajy spent 3 seasons in the OMFL coaching the Atlanta Falcons and the Dallas Cowboys, making the playoffs twice. “I feel like during my time off I learned some good things and I have a fresh perspective on the game” Coach Kahwajy said as he answered questions. While Kahwajy’s offenses are known for putting up a lot of points, he also runs a high risk scheme, so it should be interesting to see how the coach’s new perspective works out. Coach Kahwajy had this to say in closing “Im really excited there is talent all over this team. I’ve always been a fan of Steve Smith the guy has some serious wheels. We got two phenomenal backs in Stewart and Willaims. We got some big play makers on defense too. I look forward to putting to proper pieces in place to help us reach our goal of a championship.”
