Champions League Weekly - Group Stage First Week

    March 9, 2011

The first week of the Tradition Champions League produced a number of fantastic matches, as well as some real blowouts. While you can't win your group in your first week, you can certainly put yourself well behind the proverbial eight ball. Here is TCL Weekly's Hot and Not list for the first week of the group stage.

    HOT
Benfica - dominated Dortmund and scored 7 goals in two matches and didn't allow any
Everton - ruined Roma by scoring 5 goals in two matches and didn't allow any
Fulham - vanquished Villa and scored 4 goals in two matches and didn't allow any
Bukharov [Zenit] - boosted Zenit to a 6 point first week on the back of his four goals

    NOT
Dortmund - bashed by Benfica to the tune of a 7-0 aggregate score
Roma - emasculated by Everton by a total score of 5-0 over two games
Aston Villa - floundered at the hands of Fulham 4-0 over their two games
Angel [Villareal] - left in anguish as his own goal put Wolfsburg up 1-0 in their first match, but he was rescued by a Nilmar hat trick

These highs and lows weren't the best action of the first week by any stretch of the imagination. There were several tight games, one of which earns game of the week honors.

    Wolfsburg (2) vs. Villarreal (1)
This match looks like it was a true nailbiter. Wolfsburg got on the board first behind a 17th minute goal by Polak to take the early lead. From there, it seems like the teams had some good back and forth between them until Villarreal leveled the score at 1 in the 57th minute on a goal by Rossi. Then, just after the 15 minutes to go mark, Wolfsburg scored a spectacular goal (video below) to take the lead. They would hold on to win. The two teams seemed very evenly matched as they were tied at 50/50 possession and 79% pass accuracy. Villarreal held a slight edge in shots on target, but that didn't result in goals.

There were some fantastic individual performances this week as well. Here are the individual statistical leaders for the first week.

The second week of the group stage promises to be just as great as the first. I apologize for the delay in getting this posted! Make sure to read next week as the groups continue to play out towards setting the final 8 that will move on to the knockout rounds!

    Nice job with this Basis!!

If Zenit didn't already give Fulham a wake up call during their League 1 matches this week, we plan on showing those little English punks what Champions League Futbol is all about. Expect Juve (and their new formation) to reclaim the top spot of group B this week and head into the Final 8 on top form.

That should be an awesome matchup next week. Gotta keep an eye on Zenit, they're feisty!
