Chiefs Shock Bolts in spooky Monday night showdown

It was a rainy All Hallows Eve at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City as the Chiefs played their second division game in a row, notably without young guns Dwayne Bowe and Tony Moeaki, who sat out the game with injuries.

The sold out Arrowhead crowd was somewhat subdued by the inclement weather until Matt Cassel dropped back on the second play of the game. With his primary receivers covered, Cassel dumped the ball over the middle to Jamaal Charles, who broke a tackle and went to the house for a 67 yard touchdown. Needless to say, Arrowhead Stadium was rocking on Halloween night.

But neither the crowd nor the Chief defense could stop the Chargers opening march, with Philip Rivers capping a 68 yard drive with a 16 yard td pass to Jacob Hester.

The Charger defense forced a Dustin Colquitt punt and Rivers put together another impressive drive, hitting Laurent Robinson for a 19 yard score and put the Bolts up 14-7 on the first play of the 2nd quarter.

The Chiefs drove into range for the tying score, but faced a 4th and 1 from the San Diego 7. Rather than kick the field goal, the Chiefs opted to go for it and came up short.

Fortunately the crowd stayed in the game, and so did the Chiefs defense, forcing San Diego to punt. Matt Cassel orchestrated perhaps his most impressive drive of the game, hitting rookie Jonathan Baldwin on a 29 yard catch and run for his first NFL td, and some sweet redemption(Baldwin finished the game with 55 yards and a td on 2 receptions). The game went to half locked at 14.

Both defenses made adjustments at halftime, as the 3rd quarter started with a Rivers int, Colquitt punt, and an ensuing Charger punt which backed Kansas City up to its own 11. Cassel handed the ball off to the ever explosive Charles, who went yard for a monster 89 yard score and a 21-14 lead.

Rivers answered right back with another solid drive, knotting the game again at 21 with a 1 yard Tolbert run.

On the following drive the Chiefs moved into Charger territory before Cassel threw his second pick of the day. The Chiefs defense again held and forced another San Diego punt.

Kansas City got their best field position of the day and Cassel lead a drive that would see him complete passes to 5 different receivers before Jamaal Charles punched it in from 9 yards out and a 28-21 lead with 2:25 remaining in the game.

Rivers refused to quit, pushing the Bolts into the Kansas City redzone with under a minute left. But the Chiefs defense stiffened and stopped the Chargers on an eventual 4th and 10, after which Cassel was able to kneel it out and give KC the 28-21 victory.

After starting out the season a dismal 1-3, the Chiefs are back on the warpath, rattling off 3 straight victories and 2 straight division wins. They play host to the flailing 2-4 Dolphins this Sunday and need yet another W to keep pace with rival Oakland.

Player of the Game: Jamaal Charles 154 yards 11 carries 2 touchdowns, 6 rec. 100 yards 1 Td
Stat of the Day: Chiefs defense - 5 sacks by 5 different players
