    What We Learned

    1. Nebraska can throw the ball after all.

Nebraska is on a roll, moving up to #11 in the Coaches Poll at 2-0. They struggled to throw the ball in their first game against Texas A&M, as Taylor Martinez completed only 5 of 15 passes for 61 yards with 1 touchdown and a 1 interception. This week against now #15 Kansas State, Martinez was 10/13 with 173 yards and 3 touchdowns. Can he keep it up this week against #18 Virginia Tech? Through the first 2 games, VT has allowed just 1 touchdown through the air and picked off 3 passes, so it could be a test for the Huskers.

    2. Tre Roberson still has some growing up to do.

Indiana put the spread offense on the shoulders of sophomore QB Tre Roberson this year. While he has been impressive at times with his quickness, he has fumbled three times and thrown six interceptions. Two of those interceptions were returned for touchdowns at critical times and one of his fumbles sealed their fate in the first game. Is he going to be up-and-down like this for his entire college career or can he turn it around? He's only a sophomore, but he'll need start avoiding these mistakes if he's going to lead Indiana to a bowl game.

    3. Penn State can win the close games.

Amid all the contraversy over the offseason, Penn State has won two close games and is now 2-0 and ranked #14. In two consecutive weeks, they came from behind in the fourth quarter and won. Against Clemson it was two touchdowns in 32 seconds to pull ahead by 1 with 2:26 left in the game. Against Missouri this week, they faced a 7 point deficit heading into the fourth. With the game on the line and the score tied, they hit a field goal with 5 seconds remaining to win by 3. This week they face #10 Georgia who's coming off a loss to #1 Alabama.

    4. Florida State will be in the national title hunt at the end of the season.

After a big win over Arkansas in the first game, #6 Florida State nearly blew a 24-7 fourth quarter lead over Georgia Tech. But they still led the game 31-14 with under 2 minutes to go before Georgia Tech scored two quick touchdowns to pull within 3 points. But EJ Manuel had thrown 3 touchdowns with 1 interception and FSU continues to get it done on the field. I expect them to keep it up all season and be in the race for the national title when the season winds down. They have a big game coming up in Week 4 against #17 Clemson, which should tell us even more about how good the Seminoles are.

Lol, hard to believe that two teams did that this week. Seems to have been a lot of turnovers already in the first two weeks.

    What We Learned

    1. Penn State's offense can be stopped.

After putting up big numbers two weeks in a row against seemingly quality opponents, Penn State's offense was anemic against Georgia. Gaining just 4 yards on 13 carries and completing only 10 of 27 passes will make it hard to win any game. Throw in a couple turnovers and not a single 3rd down conversion (they were 1/1 on fourth down, however) and it's nearly impossible to score. Whatever the Bulldogs did on defense really worked, or maybe the Penn State offense just had a bad week. We'll have to see next week when Penn State plays at Michigan State.

    2. Maybe Nebraska can't throw the ball after all.

In week 2 we learned that Nebraska could throw the ball as Martinez threw 3 touchdowns. It turns out that might have been a one-time thing. Martinez struggled again this week against a stingy Virginia Tech defense completing just 4 of 12 passes for 48 yards and 1 interception. He did manage to get into the endzone on the ground, however. But looking at the team's struggles on offense, it's hard to put all the blame for this loss on Quincy Enunwa for his bone-head move at the goal line late in the game. Had Nebraska's offense performed well, they may not have found themselves in a 1-point game late in the fourth quarter.

    3. Florida State is good.

Need I say more? Anytime you beat a conference foe 62-0 and improve to 3-0, everyone's happy. Except the opponent you just beat, of course.

    4. Tyler Bray has some good targets.

In the big win over Notre Dame, Tennessee QB Tyler Bray completed 25 passes for 491. There were three receivers each with at least 6 receptions for over 130 yards. When he spreads the ball around and throws it well, the Volunteers' offense is going to be a very difficult one to stop. He also threw 4 touchdowns and no interceptions. If Tennessee is going to make a run at the SEC East title, it will be behind the arm of Bray and he'll need to avoid mistakes. He threw 4 picks in the first two games and none this week against Notre Dame. He's already thrown for 1,160 yards with 8 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. We'll see if he can build on those numbers this week against Texas A&M, who's coming off a bye.

    What We Learned

    1. Arkansas could go far, even without Wilson.

Arkansas lost QB Tyler Wilson last week against Minnesota, and they'll be without him for a few more weeks. But backup Brandon Mitchell has taken over and had tough job this week, traveling to Tuscaloosa to take on #1 Alabama. But he threw for 315 yards and 3 touchdowns in the upset of the top-ranked team. The Razorbacks got the season off to a pretty shaky start, throwing 4 interceptions in the opener against Florida State and getting down 24-0 against Indiana. But they were able to come back in that game and won in unimpressive fashion over Minnesota before upsetting Alabama. But they've proven they can win, and might even wish for Mitchell to stay in longer. Wilson threw 1 touchdown and 7 interceptions and Mitchell has thrown 3 touchdowns and 1 interception.

    2. Clemson isn't quite there yet.

I thought Clemson would have a big year with Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins, and they've had a pretty tough schedule so far. But I expected a 3-1 record at this point, not 1-3. Every game has been fairly close, and the lone win came in overtime over Oklahoma State. They've lost by 1 to Penn State, 10 to Virginia, and 9 to Florida State. But with an 0-2 conference record and Florida State being 3-0 in conference, they're all but out of the ACC Atlantic division race.

    A Few Things

    1. It's time to pay attention to Miami.

Miami has started out to a pretty quiet 5-0 record. Right now, Florida State is the only other undefeated user-controlled team, but we all know about them and their top-5 ranking. One reason that Miami has been quiet so far is probably because this week was their first game against a ranked team, Michigan State. But they won that game by 14 points and held an impressive 31-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Their schedule sets them up nicely because they don't play Florida State in the regular season. Don't be surprised if we see an ACC championship between two undefeated teams ranked in the top 5.

    2. Minnesota finally gets a win.

It's hard to fault Minnesota too much for their 0-4 start. They played 4 teams that are now ranked in the top 25, and they were close throughout in all but their loss to NC State. But 0-4 is still 0-4. It's interesting that their first win came against previously undefeated Iowa. QB Marqueis Gray had a great game, scoring 4 touchdowns, and now we'll see if Minnesota can keep this momentum through a bye week and then on to Northwestern.

    3. Sammy Watkins is a special player.

Most kick returners only dream of returning a kickoff for a touchdown in college. In fact, through the first 4 weeks of play, only 5 kickoffs were returned for touchdowns by any player. Sammy Watkins did it twice against Boston College. He also returned a punt for a touchdown earlier this season. After this week's game, he has 18 catches for 364 yards and 2 touchdowns and is Clemson's leading receiver in both catches and yards. If he can just work on his drops (5 drops to 15 catches through the first 4 games), he has a chance to be a very special player this season.

    A Few Things

    1. Texas A&M is gaining steam.

After suffering a tough opening loss to Nebraska in which Texas A&M QB Jameill Showers threw 7 interceptions, the Aggies have won 4 straight games and are 3-0 in the SEC. Showers hasn't been anything spectacular since the opener, throwing 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions over the past 4 games. But the defense has played well, holding each team except Ole Miss to less than 200 yards of total offense. The road only gets tougher, and the next few weeks should tell us quite a bit more about Texas A&M as they play #17 Georgia and #1 LSU in their next two games. If they win those games, it could be a big showdown in the SEC East against #8 Alabama in Week 11.

    2. Virginia Tech's 4-game winning streak comes to an end.

Virginia Tech was on a roll and had climbed to #10 in the polls with their lone loss coming against Tennessee in the opener. Prior to this week Virginia Tech, #12 Miami, and North Carolina were all tied atop the ACC Coastal division with no conference losses. This week Virginia Tech played against North Carolina and jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The Tar Heels fought back and got the game winning field goal with 2:33 remaining in the fourth quarter. Now the Hokies will most likely need to beat Miami and hope North Carolina loses a couple conference games in order to have a chance at reaching the ACC Championship.

    A Few Things

    1. Miami has a tough, but winnable, road.

Miami is having a great year, better than a lot of people expected. They're 7-0 and it looks like they may be on a collision course for the ACC Championship against Florida State in a playoff for the National Championship. But they need to get there undefeated first. The next two games for Miami are against #16 Tennessee and #18 Virginia Tech. If Miami is 9-0, they should finish the regular season at 12-0 unless they suffer a major disappointment against Virginia, Syracuse, or Duke. The Hurricanes offense has been lead by QB Stephen Morris, who has now thrown for 13 touchdowns and just 1 interception. If he continues to play that way, Miami has a good shot at playing for the National Championship at 13-0. That's right, they can even beat the mighty Seminoles if Morris doesn't get hurt and continues to play well.

    2. Big showdown this week in Tallahassee.

There's a big showdown between #10 Penn State and #2 Florida State this week. This game will probably have National Championship implications. Florida State moved to 7-0 this week and has recorded two shutouts this season. Penn State had a bye this week and was held to 7 points in their only loss of the season (against Georgia). That also happens to be the only game in which they've scored less than 28 points. If Florida State wins this game, they've still got a few tough games to go but it's just another hurdle for them on their way to the title game. Penn State, sitting at 5-1, is a little behind in the title race but an upset here would definitely put them on the right track to get there if things fall their way.

Texas A&M sits atop the SEC West at 5-0, but 6 of the 7 teams in the division are ranked in the top 25. LSU falls to 3-2 in conference, but Alabama is 3-1 and plays the Aggies in week 11. If things stay this week, that game could decide the SEC West. But don't sleep on Auburn, Mississippi State, and Arkansas. They've all got just two conference losses, so if Texas A&M loses to Alabama or slips up somewhere else things could get really interesting. Texas A&M has a very difficult schedule ahead of them, too. They've already played 4 ranked teams (3-1) and every game left on their schedule is against a team that's currently ranked.

    2. Miami's got the ACC Coastal division pretty much wrapped up.

Miami is also undefeated in conference play at 5-0. With Virginia Tech losing to Clemson this week and falling to 3-2 in conference, the upcoming Miami vs Virginia Tech game in week 10 isn't quite as big. Even if Virginia Tech upsets Miami there, Miami will be tied for first in the division with North Carolina - one game ahead of VT - and Miami wins the head-to-head tie breaker. In order for the Hokies to get back into the division race, Miami would need to lose to VT and slip somewhere else, but their conference schedule outside of Virginia Tech shouldn't give them much trouble. And with Miami and Florida State both at 8-0, the ACC Championship could be a playoff for the National Championship.

    A Few Things

    1. Minnesota won't be going bowling this year.

Sitting at 2-6, Minnesota will need to win every remaining game in order to make it to a bowl game. The problem is, their next three games are all against ranked teams: #8 Michigan, #10 Ohio State, and #17 Nebraska. It would be tough to steal 1 or 2 of those games, let alone all 3. They'll probably need to try to salvage what's left of their season, shoot for a 4-8 finish, and work on their recruiting to hope for a better season next year. They will be losing their quarterback, Marqueis Gray, but they've got a number of talented young receivers (backup QB Max Shortell did play well this week).

    2. Nebraska's now in the lead for the Big Ten Legends division.

Nebraska's big win over Michigan was an important one for their season. Ever since an early loss to Indiana, the Cornhuskers have been sitting at second place in the division, looking up at Michigan. Now they have the win over the Wolverines, handing them their first conference loss and holding the tie-breaker over them. Nebraska's remaining games are all winnable, but they will have a tough road game against Penn State in Week 11.

    A Few Things

    1. Huge win for Virginia Tech.

Who saw this coming? Virginia Tech had been slipping a little, losing 2 of their last 3 with their only win coming by 2 over Duke. Miami came into the game ranked third with an 8-0 record and was the overwhelming favorite over the 5-3 Hokies. But with the scored tied at 7, Virginia Tech scored 28 points in the second and Miami never recovered. Tech's defense really shut down Miami's offense holding them to just 3.9 yards per play. The win somewhat clutters up the top of the ACC Coastal division, with Miami and North Carolina on top with just 1 loss and Virginia Tech in third at 4-2.

    2. Clemson's turnaround continues.

Clemson started the season at a very disappointing 1-3. Since then they're 4-1 and now sit one game away from being bowl eligible with a 5-4 overall record. They don't have any chance at the division title but they can hope for an 8-4 season which would be a big success considering the way the season started. Up next they need to face #19 Maryland and #25 NC State before playing a non-conference game in the regular season finale against Georgia. A big part of their turnaround may be partly due to the teams they've played, but they've also scored at least 38 points in each of their wins this season. If they can keep up the scoring, they can finish the season on a 6 game winning streak.

    A Few Things

    1. Big Ten Leaders division race is interesting.

There's a tie at the top of the Big Ten Leaders division between Penn State and Indiana. That's right, Indiana is tied for the lead in the Leaders division and both teams hold a 5-1 conference record. Those teams play each other in which is going to be a very pivotal game in the conference race. Indiana did hand Nebraska their only conference loss so far this season, so they've done it once already. Penn State is no stranger to big games, though. They're coming off a close loss to Nebraska and led top-ranked Florida State in the third quarter. The winner of this game will likely win the division, but things will get really complex if Penn State beats Indiana and loses to Wisconsin the following week, which could result in a 3-way tie.

    2. Texas A&M clinches SEC West.

Texas A&M moves to 8-0 in conference, and Arkansas is sitting in second place in the division with a 5-2 conference record. Texas A&M's only remaining conference game is against Florida, so the worst they can do is 8-1 which would win the division. Of course, I'm sure they'd like to finish out the season and conference championship with wins over Florida, Florida State, and South Carolina which would likely give them a spot in the national championship. It won't be easy, but it's possible.

    A Few Things

    1. ACC and SEC Championship games are all set.

The SEC championship game has actually been set for a couple weeks now. #5 Texas A&M and #3 South Carolina will meet for the first time this year in a game that could determine who plays in the national championship. The ACC Championship could also have national title implications as #1 Florida State will play #8 Miami. Florida State has had the Atlantic division wrapped up for a couple weeks now and Miami clinched the Coastal division this week with a win over Syracuse. Florida State and Texas A&M play next week, so that will help one team's chances of reaching the title game while ruining the other's.

    2. Clemson is on a roll.

It's probably safe to say that Clemson has salvaged their season. After struggling early, Clemson had records of 1-3 and 2-4. Three of their losses came against ranked teams including Penn State, Florida State, and Miami and all four losses were by 10 points or less. But since sitting at 2-4, Clemson has won 5 straight by an average of 25.8 points. Their last two wins have been against ranked Maryland and NC State. Has Clemson improved that much or is just that big of a difference in the competition level from the first half to the second half of the season? Their last game is against Georgia who has also struggled but won 3 straight and is 6-5.

    A Few Things

    1. Big Ten Championship will be a rematch.

Indiana beat Nebraska 42-35 in week 4 of this season, and they'll meet again in Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship and a chance to play in the Rose Bowl. Indiana comes into the game at 8-4 and riding a 4 game win streak, while Nebraska comes in at 9-3 after a win against Iowa, bouncing back from a loss to Minnesota the week before. If Indiana hopes to pull off yet another upset this season, they'll need to stop the Huskers' rushing attack better than the first time this season when they gained 8.1 yards per carry and had 227 rushing yards on the day. Indiana does have the second-best rush defense in the nation, so if they can play as they have in just about every other game this year they may be able to get the win. The Nebraska offense is led by QB Taylor Martinez, who has thrown for 1,295 yards and 9 touchdowns as well as rushed for 1,387 yards and 14 touchdowns with HB Rex Burkhead adding 1,351 yards and 14 touchdowns on the groud. It's a big game with a lot on the line and should be an interesting one.

    2. ACC and SEC Championships will determine the national title.

Florida State and Miami will move to the top two spots in the BCS Standings, making that game a play-in game for the national championship. But who the winner of that will play is the big question. South Carolina and Texas A&M will be #4 and #6. If South Carolina wins, will that be enough to jump Arkansas? And if Texas A&M wins, will that be enough to jump everyone else plus Notre Dame to get in? These conference championships are going to be huge in determining who gets to play for the national title.

    Extra Points

    1. Who will the BCS pick?

We know that Florida State will be playing for the national title. But against who? Texas A&M just beat South Carolina in the SEC Championship, meaning they're going to jump at the very least Miami and South Carolina. But the Aggies are tied for 5th with Notre Dame in the current BCS standings and trail #3 Arkansas by 0.011 points. They'll easily leave Notre Dame behind, but is a 4 point win over South Carolina going to be enough to push them ahead Arkansas? When they played in Week 5, Texas A&M won 19-14. Texas A&M also has a better record at 11-2 while Arkansas is 9-3. They both hold losses to Florida State, and Texas A&M seems to have played them a bit better. Arkansas' other loss was against #24 Auburn while Texas A&M's other loss was in the season opener to #15 Nebraska. If I'm voting, I know who I'd vote for but I'm not sure if Texas A&M will be able to jump Arkansas.

    Extra Points

    1. Congrats to Texas A&M

As I'm sure many others did, I had pretty much given the national championship to Florida State. They had already beaten Texas A&M near the end of the season and were 13-0, including a few shutouts. But Texas A&M came ready to play and forced 2 interceptions from the Heisman winner and sacked him twice, holding him to -6 yards rushing. The Aggies also played mistake free, not turning the ball over once, gaining 6.5 yards per play, and not being sacking at all in 21 pass attempts. This time they came out on top and were able to win the national championship and finish with a 12-2 record. Congratulation to the Texas A&M Aggies, 2012 National Champions!

You have provided the league with excellent content week in and week out this year. I'm pretty sure you didn't even miss 1 week, which is very rare. Great job man.

I know this is unprecedented in Overdrive, but it was brought to my attention that we should reward such great work and I completely agree.

We wanted to award you an additional :5stars: recruit on top of the two you are allowed for next season.

We all should try to be more like you when it comes to content. :)

    Clay

Now that's the type of leadership this league needs.

Well thanks for noticing. :) I really do enjoy doing content, whatever it may be. College Gameday Final has been fun because I can easily keep up with what everyone else is doing. I did miss week 1, though, when you did it. Thanks for the extra :5stars: recruit, but I really doubt Indiana will even be able to get 1 of them. If it is possible to pick up 3, I'll do that.
