Week 2 Quick Hits #6 Florida State holds off 4th quarter comeback by Georgia Tech, wins 31-28. #16 Nebraska makes a statement in non-conference play, beating #11 Kansas State 41-31. Texas A&M's Christine Michael scores two 4th quarter touchdowns to win 31-24, Wisconsin falls to 0-2. Tennessee throws three pick-six's as Florida blows them out in Knoxville, 51-21. #25 NC State's James Washington rushes for 4 touchdowns, downs Minnesota 34-14. #19 Oklahoma State takes it to overtime, falls short to #20 Clemson 44-41. #23 Virginia Tech bounces back, cruises past #10 Michigan State 28-10. In a shootout including 754 total passing yards, #18 Penn State gets a late field goal to edge Missouri 48-45. #1 Alabama gets three defensive touchdowns to hold off #7 Georgia, 38-24. #12 Arkansas comes back from down 24, avoids upset against Indiana 31-24. What We Learned 1. Nebraska can throw the ball after all. Nebraska is on a roll, moving up to #11 in the Coaches Poll at 2-0. They struggled to throw the ball in their first game against Texas A&M, as Taylor Martinez completed only 5 of 15 passes for 61 yards with 1 touchdown and a 1 interception. This week against now #15 Kansas State, Martinez was 10/13 with 173 yards and 3 touchdowns. Can he keep it up this week against #18 Virginia Tech? Through the first 2 games, VT has allowed just 1 touchdown through the air and picked off 3 passes, so it could be a test for the Huskers. 2. Tre Roberson still has some growing up to do. Indiana put the spread offense on the shoulders of sophomore QB Tre Roberson this year. While he has been impressive at times with his quickness, he has fumbled three times and thrown six interceptions. Two of those interceptions were returned for touchdowns at critical times and one of his fumbles sealed their fate in the first game. Is he going to be up-and-down like this for his entire college career or can he turn it around? He's only a sophomore, but he'll need start avoiding these mistakes if he's going to lead Indiana to a bowl game. 3. Penn State can win the close games. Amid all the contraversy over the offseason, Penn State has won two close games and is now 2-0 and ranked #14. In two consecutive weeks, they came from behind in the fourth quarter and won. Against Clemson it was two touchdowns in 32 seconds to pull ahead by 1 with 2:26 left in the game. Against Missouri this week, they faced a 7 point deficit heading into the fourth. With the game on the line and the score tied, they hit a field goal with 5 seconds remaining to win by 3. This week they face #10 Georgia who's coming off a loss to #1 Alabama. 4. Florida State will be in the national title hunt at the end of the season. After a big win over Arkansas in the first game, #6 Florida State nearly blew a 24-7 fourth quarter lead over Georgia Tech. But they still led the game 31-14 with under 2 minutes to go before Georgia Tech scored two quick touchdowns to pull within 3 points. But EJ Manuel had thrown 3 touchdowns with 1 interception and FSU continues to get it done on the field. I expect them to keep it up all season and be in the race for the national title when the season winds down. They have a big game coming up in Week 4 against #17 Clemson, which should tell us even more about how good the Seminoles are.
