Conference Championship PreviewNothing is for certain, but in all likelihood, the conference championship will be played between the Temple Owls and the Toledo Rockets. Both teams did exactly what they needed to do last week in order to give them the best chance to meet at Ford Field and that was beat the 2nd place team in each of their respected divisions. Temple defeated Miami Ohio 42-35 in a game where Temple jumped out to a 21-0 lead, just to see Miami Ohio make a spectacular comeback, just to come up one touchdown short. Toledo had their own close game, holding off the Western Michigan Broncos in double overtime after stopping a 2 PT conversion attempt. Both teams still need to win out in order to make the Conference Championship. 6-4 (5-2) Team Leaders: QB- Chester Stewart- 166-348 3023 yards 20 tds 31 ints RB- Benard Pierce- 132 596 yards 6 tds 1 fumble 132 Rec yards WR- Malcolm Eugene- 37 rec 871 yards 6 tds SS- Justin Gildea- 38 tackles 5 TFL 1 INT 1 FF Temple had a rough season outside of conference play going 1-2, losses to Iowa and Penn St., but once they got into conference, they seemed to really put things together and are well on their way to Detroit to play in the Conference Championship. Their win last week against Miami OH has given them the edge. Temple has two games remaining, an out of conference game against Army which has no effect on the conference, and they finish the season off with Kent State coming to town who is still suffering from the abrupt loss of there coach, who decided he didn't want to be in charge of the football program. 9-1 (5-1) Team Leaders: QB- Terrence Owens- 150-270 2494 yards 26 tds 11 ints 448 rushing yards 8 rushing tds RB- Adonis Thomas- 114 660 yards 5 tds WR- Eric Page- 36 rec 795 yards 14 tds MLB- Terrell Anders- 42 tackles 20 tfl 3 sacks 6 ints 1 ff Toledo has had a very successful season so far, only having one game where it slipped against Northern Illinois in double overtime. The #7 ranked team in the nation has looked great other than that one game, and even in that game, the end could have gone either way. After beating conference rival Western Michigan last week, the Rockets control their own destiny with only one game remaining. They finish the season off at Ball St. who has had a disappointing season, but have plenty to play for with bowl eligibility on the line. Keys to the Game: If Temple is going to pull this upset off, Chester Stewart will have to be mistake free. Chester has had a pretty good season throwing the ball, but his 31 interceptions have really made him an after thought when you talk about the top quarterback in the conference. If he can throw the ball efficiently, the Temple Owls can win this game and pull of a big upset in the Conference Championship. For Toledo, they have to continue to do what's made them successful all season and that's rely on Terrence Owens to win ball games for them, rather it be using his feet, or throwing the football. Owens, a redshirt sophomore, has really carried this team so far, and people shouldn't expect anything different to come with the biggest game of his young career approaching fast.
