Not understanding how this works? Can it help if I'm already hard wired?

I think that's why I usually don't have much issue with my connection. I use Ethernet wired connection. I always wondered why some had so much connection trouble.

Does this help with connection quality or the ability to connect. Both with my 360 and X1 I've only been able to connect online when hardwired. For the few times I could connect, the speed was fine. I may need to get one of these when I move out after the semester.

If you have the ability to hard wire, you should definitely do so.

Yea if you're gaming online you 'should' be hardwired. If forced to use wifi, you should set up a static IP address for your xbox and put that in your routers gaming mode. Pretty much every newer router has a dedicated 'game' option.

    This website goes in-depth : http://portforward.com/networking/static-ip-xbox-one/

I'd recommend just going to your xbox dashboard / Settings>>Network>> check your NAT type, go to advanced settings. Write down your box's IP address.

Go to your home computer and access your router (typically type 192.168.0.1) in the URL bar. If you don't know your log in information you can google every default log in, just search your router type. Once you're in the router look for a gateway or firewall tab. In that section you should see a "game" option or "DMZ" option. Enter the IP address you found on your Xbox, save settings and you're good.
Assigning a static IP address is important if you're wifi connected though so your box has the same IP address every time.

    FYI, if this helps anybody
If you have a netgear router, the login is usually admin/password by default. I recently had to get a new router due to my existing one going dead.
