CSKA Moscow start the season off with a victory over Bursaspor

1st Half: Bursaspor controlled the ball for most of the half but CSKA were able to capitalize on a fortunate turnover 10' into the game. MF Oliseh tried to pass to FW Doumbia, but was intercepted by the Bursaspor defender. As the defender tried to turn with the ball to clear it, Oliseh put in the 2nd effort to take the ball away and pass it to Doumbia, who was waiting just outside the 6, and tucked it into the back of the net. Both teams would try to get something going on attack but not only were they battling eachother on the field, they were both battling against the elements as the snow was affecting the field. Up to this point, CSKA only had 1 shot on goal and were lucky enough to have the 1-0 lead.

2nd Half: CSKA were looking to increase their lead but Bursaspor would be the one to generate the first couple of chances. But CSKA keeper Akinfeev was up to the task. The 2nd half would have some fast paced back and forth action, but most of the attacking pressure ended up leading to the opposing defenders knocking the ball lose and starting the attack in the other direction. CSKA broke through again at the 72' when Oliseh's cross into the box was headed away by the Bursaspor defender, right to MF Honda who was running into the box as the ball came in and he somehow kept the ball through 3 defenders who were clustered around him, and he scores from just outside the 6.

Final score Bursaspor 0 @ 2 CSKA Moscow

CSKA Moscow off to a good start vs Vfl Wolfsburg

CSKA Moscow were looking to see if the positive training sessions would translate into improved teamwork on the pitch. They were able to generate some chances, and they finally broke through as FW Doumbia gathered the ball and took a quick shot to beat the Wolfsburg keeper. Wolfsburg responded with strong play and ball control, but could not equalize. Doumbia would strike again soon after that as he met a Gonzalez cross with his head and the ball would get by the diving Wolfsburg keeper. The second half was a display of team defense, as both teams kept the ball in midfield thanks to numerous turnovers and loss of possession.

Final score CSKA Moscow 2 @ 0 Vfl Wolfsburg

GG Cimmy and GL the rest of the way!

*** sidenote: I only listed 1 player under top players instead of 3 because after the 1st half we were disconnected and continued our game by playing another half. I based the rating on my other game where Doumbia scored 1 goal and had a 9.0 rating and figured 2 goals would justify a 9.1.

CSKA Moscow takes advantage of costly turnovers to beat Everton

The first chance of the game came from Everton as they were able to get a clear shot on net that was saved by GK Akinfeev. CSKA would then catch a break as one of the Everton players knocked the ball backwards to a wide open K. Honda who scored on a breakaway at the 29' mark. Minutes later, the Everton goalkeeper would take a goal kick, and made a light pass to his closest defender, only to be intercepted by S. Doumbia who went into the box alone and buried the ball into the back of the net. The second half started with a quick goal, as S. Doumbia took a shot from just inside the box, bounced off a sliding Everton defender and was met with a Vagner Love header past the goalkeeper. The next 15 minutes would have both teams locked in midfield. At the 68' mark, CSKA's Oliseh tried to take a shot but was brought down inside the box for a penalty kick. Vagner Love would covert the penalty to make the score 4-0. CSKA would capitalize off another turnover just outside the box which saw K. Honda net his 2nd of the match from distance to cap off the scoring.

CSKA Moscow continues good form, gets win against FC Schalke 04

This game was like a chess match as both teams essentially split possession 50/50. Neither team was able to generate much but CSKA would catch a break when S. Doumbia collected a put a powerful shot past the Schalke keeper at the 22' mark. Both teams started to create chances, and Schalke was able to get through for a clear shot but was parried away by GK Akinfeev. The 2nd half started out the same as the 1st, with both teams able to control the ball in midfield, and then turning it over once they got near the box. In the 55th minute, Vagner Love would break into the box and cut back past the defender to find himself essentially one on one with the keeper. He would make no mistake and placed a perfect shot just inside the far post to increase the lead to 2-0. With Schalke pressing, the CSKA defense pairing of S. Ignashevich and V. Berezutskiy were able to stand their ground, winning tackles and winning the 50/50 balls.

Unfortunately, no highlights of this game are available as the match highlights option wasn't a menu item for some reason.

CSKA Moscow starts slow, falls short of picking up any points against Hamburg

CSKA were riding a 4 game win streak heading into this game but Hamburg came out on the attack right away. Hamburg would surprise CSKA as Trochowski got open on a give and go and found himself one on one with the keeper. He would place the ball into the net just 2 minutes in. Hamburg would continue to attack and would be rewarded just 13 minutes later as Trochowski again found the back of the net at the 15' mark. CSKA really couldn't generate anything as they were constantly pressured and forced into poor passes. Hamburg would have a couple more chances to score some more but missed wide and over the net. At halftime, CSKA manager shiftee told his players it doesn't matter if we lose by 2 or by 4, we're going on the attack and want to give the Hamburg players as little time as possible to create plays. Having only 1 or 2 shots in the first half was not going to be acceptable. The players seemed to respond in the 2nd half as they were able to create a lot of chances, but couldn't put the ball into the back of the net thanks to near misses and a sliding block by the Hamburg defender. CSKA would finally break through at the 80' mark when Gonzalez picked up the rebound in the box and shot it past the keeper. The game would end 2-1 Hamburg but CSKA didn't hold their heads down but were disappointed in knowing they could have at least come away with a tie after such a slow start.

CSKA Moscow bounces back from loss, beats Genoa 3-1

Coming off their first loss of the season, CSKA was looking to respond against Genoa. Both teams generated very little in the first half, as both defenses would shut down the attack whenever the ball came near the box. At the 45th minute, CSKA was awarded a corner kick and Berezutskiy connected with a header to grab the 1-0 lead in injury time. Genoa would respond at 52' in the 2nd half as they forced a turnover and Kucka made a nice pass to Floro Flores, who fought off the CSKA defender, and slid the ball past the CSKA keeper. CSKA showed their poise by responding just 3 minutes later, as Vagner Love got through and fended off a couple of Genoa defenders, kept his balance, and fired a shot into the net at the 55' mark to regain the lead at 2-1. 13 minutes later, at the 68' mark, CSKA leading scorer Doumbia would get past the last defender and hold him off while placing a left footed shot past a diving Genoa keeper to seal the game 3-1.

CSKA Moscow held to a draw against Lille

This game was played in heavy rain and it affected ball control for both teams. Most of the play was in midfield and it was very tough for either team to create plays. When either team did create a chance, the shot was either off target or the keeper made the save. The 2nd half finally provided some offense, as Lille was pressing in the box, CSKA defender Ignashevich tried to slide at the free ball but brought down Hazard instead for the penalty kick. Cabaye made no mistake and gave his team the 1-0 lead. The teams would continue to deal with the rain as there were many turnovers and poor passes made. CSKA substitue Dzagoev would eventually collect the ball in midfield and find K. Honda running along side a lone defender and slid a pass ahead of them. Honda was able to get by the last man back and scored the equalizer with just minutes left in the game. It would end in a 1-1 draw.

GG AL and good luck the rest of the way.

CSKA Moscow fight back to take win against Napoli

The game couldn't have started out much better for CSKA as Doumbia fired a shot pass a diving De Sanctis from just outside the box at the 12' mark. But Napoli wouldn't roll over on the early goal and they would eventually equalize at the 40th minute. With CSKA failing to clear the ball, Hamsik got in behind and shot the loose ball by Akinfeev. CSKA would find themselves on the wrong side of a penalty shot for the 2nd straight game, and Hamsik converted the penalty which came at the 59th minute. CSKA would continue to get their chances and finally tied it up in the 68th minute as Vagner Love knocked the ball past De Sanctis. With the game looking like it was going to eventually end in a draw, Doumbia made a nice move to get by the Napoli defender and he buried the ball into the back of the net at 84'. Napoli would generate a few more chances but Akinfeev came up with the saves when called upon.

GG grundle and good luck the rest of the way.

CSKA Moscow squeeze past Palermo in a defensive battle

Palermo was playing host to CSKA Moscow in what was anticipated to be a tough game for the top 2 teams in the table. Both teams found themselves turning the ball over but able to recover defensively to avoid any real goal threat. CSKA would finally break the deadlock at 44' when Oliseh saved a ball from going out of play and crossed it into the box where Doumbia was able to connect with a header. CSKA would get 1 more chance just before the 1st half ended, but with great 1 on 1 defense by Palermo, the last shot was well wide. The 2nd half was more of the same, as both teams were able to control the ball for the most part, but 1 off target pass would be intercepted and turned the other way. There weren't many times when any player was able to beat their defender 1 on 1. Palermo did get a couple of early chances, one coming minutes into the 2nd half, as the Palermo striker (I forget who it was), got in behind his man and shot from just outside the 6, but was met by GK Akinfeev save. As Palermo started to press on near the closing minutes, CSKA were able to break out down the field but Palermo did a great job containing the pressure and forcing turnovers.

GG Zikry and GL the rest of the way!

CSKA Moscow lose playoff to Hamburg

CSKA started strong when Vagner Love scored 8 minutes into the game, but a few minutes later the momentum was gone as Van Nistelrooy, who took advantage of the defensive mistake leaving him wide open, headed a cross into the net. The rest of the half would be a defensive battle, although CSKA did generate some good scoring chances but either failed to hit the target, or the Hamburg keeper made a nice save. Hamburg would strike quickly in the 2nd half as Van Nistelrooy scored his 2nd of the game at the 49th minute of another defensive mistake which allowed Van Nistelrooy to cut to the middle between the defenders and placed a perfect shot. CSKA would continue to generate opportunities but would only come so close to getting the tying goal on numerous occasions, again just missing the net or some more nice saves by the Hamburg keeper.

It was a great game overall, very intense and a great atmosphere. It came down to who would make fewer mistakes and who would be able to capitalize on those chances. Congrats to Broncos and his Hamburg team.

CSKA Moscow get set for season 2!

The squad have finished their preseason training and are looking forward to getting the new season underway. CSKA is looking to improve on last season while cutting down on defensive lapses that seemed to have crept into their weekly plan for a long stretch of the 2nd half of the season. The attack will look to be more balanced this season rather than having S. Doumbia carry the offense on his shoulders. A lot will be expected from Vagner Love, K. Honda, Gonzalez, Dzagoev, Oliseh. CSKA have been working hard to tighten up the defensive side of play as well and are also hoping that keeper Akinfeev can repeat his performances of season 1.

    Fixture list for Season 2:

Matchday 01: CSKA Moscow @ Everton
Matchday 02: CSKA Moscow @ Bolton
Matchday 03: CSKA Moscow @ Lazio
