    Daily Bruin Texas @ UCLA

Daily Bruin The Tradition #16 (Kingerock) V. #8 UCLA (jfosh).

UCLA doesn’t have the most experience at hosting big non-conference games usually making the trip coming close but returning home empty handed none the less. So, it was with no surprise that Westwood was abuzz with this week’s matchup against Texas. The Bruins had suffered a UFC style “ground and pound†at the hands of Purdue last week. Pundits could be heard across the country shouting overrated about media darling UCLA. The Bruins were prime to drop like a rock in national polls if they couldn’t beat a top tier team like Texas.

If you were taking a piss, in line at the concession stand, participating in your favorite bedroom activity or anything else that takes you 12 seconds. You missed it! That’s how long it took Texas to receive the kickoff, call a play, and end up in the end zone. Longhorn standout WR Geoff Kelly took a pass from QB Gary Warren 68 yards for the score after breaking a CB Larry Latimer tackle. I’m not kidding. This play was like a carbon copy of the one Purdue’s Brian Williams scored on from 63 yards last week including the broken Latimer tackle. It was like a Vietnam flashback painful and confusing. The air was let out of the stadium and the Bruins didn’t fare any better on their drive. Texas busted threw the line on 3rd down and drove Michael Roberts into the ground, UCLA punted. Texas’ next drive ended the same way with a sack on 3rd down but it still resulted in 3 points on the board. 10-0. The fun at the Rose Bowl did not stop there for Texas on the next drive under pressure Roberts put one right into the hands of waiting MLB Brandon Riley, Longhorn ball in UCLA territory. It was an all out assault “shock and awe†very scary. Finally, something went right for the Bruins, Latimer actually positioned himself to break up an intended 3rd and 3 sure 1st down pass play intended for Kelly. Big breath, it could have been worse Texas settled for the field goal and lead 13-0 with a 1:42 left in the first. UCLA got turned around in the saddle on their next drive after a 34 yard run by Emmanuel Nicholas off the Texas left side. The Bruins ended up in the end zone before the quarter was over on an 18 yard strike to Nicholas.

The Longhorns punted to UCLA on their first drive of the second quarter. Armed with good field position the Bruins could sense the tide turning. Needing to pick up a 1st down near the middle of the field Roberts was looking to pass to a crossing Chad Grevious, Roberts released the ball only to have Nicholas snag it out of mid air in front of the 1st down line. Nicholas turned around ignited the jets and flew up the middle of the field for a 48 yard Bruin score. Momentum had definitely swung. Texas went 3 and out on their next series. UCLA drove down the field getting 38 yards in one big chunk on a Roberts’s option keeper. Roberts capped off the drive by finding WR Ryan Robinson in the back of the end zone, one of his two touchdown receptions on the day. 21-13. UCLA didn’t have time to finish congratulating each other before Texas struck again this time on a 92 yard kickoff return by Nick Howard. The two point conversion failed but in a blink of an eye the score was 21-19.

UCLA had the ball coming to them in the third and they weren’t going to give it back. They used a barrage of runs mostly to Nicholas (36 carries in the game) to eat up 5:30 of the 3rd quarter. The Bruins worked their way down to the Texas 5 yard line before they started moving backwards. DE Trevor Stewart took over sacking Roberts on consecutive plays. Stewart was a beast all day on the left side he was credited for 7 tackles 6 of which were for a loss and 3 of those were sacks. The drive ended with a 34 yard field goal. (24-19) Texas might as well of took a cold shower they were off the field so long. Warren might of still been stiff when he served up a pick to nickel back Matt Fitzhugh. The Longhorn defense did not show any signs of being tired sacking UCLA for the 3 time in a row going back to stop on the series before. UCLA punted to wind down the third quarter.

Early in the 4th quarter Texas punted the ball back to UCLA. The Bruins were trying to put Texas away in the second-half but couldn’t shake em. On 3 and 9 from their 31 they caught a break. Robinson headed toward the sideline on a corner route. Roberts released the ball; it was going to be close. Could he stay in bounds? Could Roberts get it there? The defending corner for Texas gave up on the play and Roberts came down in bounds and headed down the sideline for a 69 yard score. (31-19) Texas wasn’t about to give in they moved the ball just inside UCLA territory and converted a 4th and 1. Kelly streaked down the right sideline on the next play toward the end zone the ball was in the air but FS Jordan Downs had locked in on it as soon as it was fired. Downs streaked over jumped up in front of Kelly and made the interception. After the pick speedster Jordan Downs high stepped his way to the end zone sealing the deal for the Bruins. The teams each scored again after that to bring the final tally to 45-26.

Roberts is doing what he has to do for UCLA...when he makes mistakes, watch out...all he has to do is play efficient football, don't turn the ball over, make key runs mostly and surprise with the pass...have Nicholas be the man to pound the rock.

Nice writeup man. I especially loved the first paragraph, great job of describing the feelings when you get down early in a game you need to win.

I know I'm an outsider, but nice writeup jfosh. Usually I'm lurking and admiring from afar, but the template, pictures, and the nice breakdown put together very well. Hopefully you do more in the future.
