Tigers Fire Leyland after Playoff Drought

After multiple season of barely making the playoffs, losing a play in game, and collapsing in the 2nd half, the Tigers organization has decided to part ways with Manager Jim Leyland. In 2010 the tigers went 81-81, finishing 3rd in the AL Central. A season that showed hope for a Tigers team with great performances from young players such as Austin Jackson and Brandon Boecsh, eventually turned for the worse with injury bug burdens and cold streaks. Perhaps more than anything more memorable from the '10 season was the biggest shaft in MLB history, the "Perfect Game that Wasn't" by P Galarraga (now a member of the Diamondbacks).
But that is the past and the tigers have decided to move completely out of the past leaving the old skipper behind and hastily making a new hire that nobody expected. Coach Hova TheGodMC was hired today by the Tigers as new Manager in a shocking move. He has no MLB experience but is a Michigan born Coach and lifelong tigers fan. His success in Junior College was noticed by scouts and next thing you know he is on board with the biggest coaching job of his life. With new bats in the lineup like C Victor Martinez and the return of star 1B Miguel Cabrera (If he can stay off the booze...) the tigers SHOULD have a formidable lineup. The bullpen has been bolstered by set up man Joaquin benoit from the Drays, and Verlander returns as the Ace of the pitching staff.
The grass is being tended to at Comerica Park and Detroit fans are ancy for the new season to begin, which kicks off March 31st when the tigers open up in New York City against the Yankees on ESPN. Look out next week for the final MLB roster and rotation as the tigers head back north to Detroit after a solid spring training down in Lakeland, FL.

    Tigers Terrible in Season Opener
    [IMG]

    Yankees 11
    Tigers 2

"The tigers came out on opening day hoping to get a good outing from Verlander and got anything but. Things were smooth in the 1st as Verlander only gave up one hit, but things would go south in the 2nd Inning as Mark Teixera bombed a homerun off the rightfield foul poll. Things would really get bad the very next pitch as Verlander pulled his calf and would be out for the rest of the game. He is expected to miss 5 days atleast so he will be questionable for his next start at Baltimore. This would put the tigers in a terrible position with a cold pitcher coming off the bench. The Yanks would then proceed to get 19 hits on the day led by 2 HRs by Teixera. Yankee Pitcher CC Sabathia wen 8.2 Innings with 11 strikeouts and 2 runs. The only tiger that had a good day was 3B Brandon Inge who went 3 for 4 with an RBI. The tigers look to rebound after a day off sending P Max Scherzer to the mound to face P Phil Hughes. Let's hope out starter can go more than 1 inning next game."

Tigers fall short after 8-run Ninth

This game started out much like the rest with the tigers unable to get any offense and the yankee offense blowing the game away led by 4 hits from Cano. P Scherzer gave up 11 hits and 8 runs but still managed 9 strikeouts. The game looked to be over in the top of the ninth until the Tiger offense finally exploded with hit after hit topped off by a 3-run homer by Ryan Raburn, the first tiger bomb of the year. This would bring the game to 11-10 with 2 outs. C Victor Martinez came to the plate and grounded out on the 2nd pitch to 3rd base. The tigers fall short in the huge rally. Raburn had a great game going 3 fpr 4 with a HR and 2 doubles. Austin Jackson had 2 Stolen Bases bringing his season total to 3. The tigers look to avoid the sweep tomorrow vs the yankees.

2B Will Rhymes has been diagnosed with an Ankle Ligament Rupture that was received when sliding head first into third base. He is expected to miss 2-4 weeks and has been put on the 15 Day DL. The injury occured 2 games after Rhymes had earned the starting job with his strong fielding presence. The tigers expect to rotate Guillen and SS Santiago at 2nd throughout the month that Rhymes misses. Will Rhymes was hitting .286 with 2 RBIs before the injury. In other injury news RF Magglio Ordonez expects to miss Sunday's game but should be back for the home-stand vs the Texas Rangers that starts Monday.

Peralta's clutch triple late leads to Win

The tigers hosted the Royals today in the final game of the series, looking for the sweep. That game as a shutout through 8 innings for both sides as no one could seem to put together hits and kept on stranding runners. With a struggling lineup late Coach Hova brought in Magglio Ordonez off the bench to pinch hit. Despite his minor injury he was able to get a clutch single. Next up was SS Johny Peralta who hit a triple bringing the run home to gain a 1-0 lead. Highlight here:

CF Austin Jackson would then get another RBI single bringing the lead to 2-0. The tigers would then bring in Closer Valverde who gave up one run in the ninth but held on for his first save of the season. MR Joel Zumaya picked up the decision.
    Other Stats:
    3B J. Peralta (2)
    RBI A. Jackson (9), J. Peralta (12)
    SB A. Jackson (1)
    W J. Zumaya (1)
    S J. Valverde (1)
The tigers host the Texas Rangers for a 3-game series next in Comerica Park.

    Injury News

Another injury for the Tigers, this time a huge one, as CF Austin Jackson (the MLB leader in stolen bases) has suffered an Ankle Injury and is expected to miss at least a month of action, if not more. This is a huge blow for the Tigers as Jackson was the best base runner, fielder, and was batting .319 with 11 RBIs on the season. The Tigers have called up LF Don Kelly from AAA to take a bench spot as OF Brennan Boesch will be taking over CF and the lead off spot for the duration of the injury.

The tigers have started off well with the bats, led by Miguel Cabrera with 17 RBIs and 6 Homers. Others that started out great are 3B Brandon Inge and CF Austin Jackson depsite his injury. SS Jhonny Peralta has cooled off a bit but still had a great April. Brennan Boesch has taken advantage of his increased playing time and has produced alot of runs.
So far Brad Penny has been the strongest pitcher on the squad with 2 wins and a great 2.18 ERA. Ace Justin Verlander has started very slow as usual but picked it up recently with a great complete game shutout over the Indians, hopefully he can ride the momentum into May.

The Tigers headed to Canada this week to take on the Toronto Blue Jays in the Rogers Center for a 4-game series. The first game in the series turned out to be a close one, tied 2-2 in the 8th inning. A clutch RBI single by C Victor Martinez drove home a run to give the tigers the lead. Closer Valverde would then come in to pick up his 9th save of the season. Starting pitcher Rick Porcello had a good outing, going 6 innings with 2 earned runs and 2 strikeouts. MR Joel Zumaya picks up the decision. Game 2 will be tomorrow in Toronto.

Strong performance from Penny, Tigers win 2-0
The Tigers played Game 2 of the 4-game series with Toronto last night in the Rogers Centre and picked up another win thanks to strong pitching from Brad Penny. He went 7.1 innings giving up 0 runs and 10 hits. He had no walks and 8 strikeouts. On offense the tigers continued to get great play from Magglio Ordonez who hit his 4th HR of the season and now has 18 RBIs. Miguel Cabrera went 2-3 with a walk and a double. Most of the production came from the top of the lineup with the bottom struggling. The tigers play game 3 Sunday at 1 PM sending Phil Coke (2-2) to the bump vs Casey Janssen (1-0).

I just had my starting pitcher and another OF go down with injuries, I am thinking this may be a problem. Thats like 6 guys on the DL now... I may need to tweak the slider or something.

Review for the game coming soon.
