Vikings Make Historic Comeback; Take Advantage of Ryan Meltdown
Minneapolis, MN - The (14-2) Vikings squared off against the (12-5) Falcons in the 2013 NFC Divisional Round to see who would be playing the Redskins next week for a chance to go the Super Bowl. These two teams had met once in the regular season, when the Falcons handed the Vikings 1 of their 2 losses on the season, winning 38-14. The Purple People Eaters had revenge on their mind. What they got was an epic battle that will surely go down as an instant classic.

The Vikings would receive first, but a drop by Percy Harvin on 3rd and short forced them to punt the ball away. The Falcons started right where they left off last week, and Matt Ryan immediately hit WR Julio Jones for an 85-yard TD pass on a slant (in very tight coverage). The Vikings would respond, however, as Tony Romo would find Harvin on a curl - the DB completely whiffed on the tackle and he would take it 47 yards to the house. The score after 1 quarter of play: 7-7.

The second quarter was all Atlanta. The Vikings couldn't get anything going on offense, and AP was held to under 35 yards for the entire first half. Meanwhile, Matt Ryan seemed to be completely unstoppable. He would hit both Roy Williams & Tony G for TD's in the quarter, and his receivers made highlight-reel catches all night. The score at half: 21-7 in favor of the Falcons.

To add insult to injury, the Falcons would receive the ball to start the half. HB Jahvid Best would take the handoff up the middle, bounce to the outside, and 75 yards later found the end zone to put the Falcons up 21 points early in the 3rd quarter. It looked as though the game was going to get ugly, as the first match-up between these two teams did. The Vikings would respond, and WR Percy Harvin took a slant pass, made the safety miss and ran 56 yards into the end zone. But a FG for the Falcons on their next drive made the score 31-14 entering the 4th quarter.

The Vikings, at this point, were just hoping to do what they could to keep the score respectable. They would finally get AP going, and the record-breaking running back would score from 1-yard out with 7:39 to play. This is when the game got VERY interesting...

On the Falcons next drive, QB Matt Ryan made his first mistake of the night (he was near perfect up to this point), as he was picked off by CB Antoine Winfield deep in Falcon territory. The Vikings would make them pay on the next play - a 24-yard TD run from AP on a toss. Just 46 seconds later, QB Matt Ryan would throw another INT, and this one was taken to the house by FS Nick Collins! The Vikings #1 ranked Defense had given them their first lead - 35-31! Less than a minute later, QB Matt Ryan's meltdown continued - he would throw a 3rd interception in the quarter and it was again taken back the other way for a TD by LOLB Chad Greenway. On the very next drive, Matt Ryan would throw his 4th INT of the quarter which Vikings coach JSimms, with a 42-31 lead with less than 4 minutes to play, figured to be the game.

However, QB Tony Romo would throw an INT of his own attempting to pick up a game-sealing first down. Deep in Viking territory, the Falcons would jump back on the board with a 2-yd TD run by Michael Turner. 3:10 to play - 42-38 game and the Falcons had all three timeouts left. The Vikings were unable to pick up a first down, and QB Matt Ryan and the Falcon offense would get a chance to redeem themselves. They marched all the way down to the Viking 40 yard line when this play happened - a ball was tipped at the line of scrimmage, a Falcon WR (not sure who) would come back and make a sliding catch, he jumped to his feet and was rocked by LOLB Chad Greenway and fumbled the ball! The ball was picked up by DT Kevin Williams, which FINALLY sealed this game.

Wow, what a game Hokie Effect! You dominated this game for 3 quarters, but just couldnt seem to get out of the 4th. It reminded me of my baseball playing days, when we'd have a huge lead in the 9th inning only to watch our closer give up 6 runs...

    Players of the Game:

WR Julio Jones - 13 catches, 229 yds, 1 TD
HB Jahvid Best - 8 attempts, 95 yds, 1 TD

    QB Tony Romo - 12 of 17, 233 yds, 2 TD, 1 INT
WR Percy Harvin - 3 catches, 126 yds, 2 TD
    Viking D - 2 sacks, 4 INT (2 INT TD), 1 FF, 1 FR

Wow, what a comeback. Poor Matt Ryan, such a great season this year. After leading the league in interceptions last year, some thought this was his year to take home the trophy.

I would have been better off taking a knee the entire 4th quarter. 5 turnovers in the 4th!!!!

This one definately leaves a sour taste.....

    Ugh gg JSimms
