Lazio Register First Win of Campaign to Close off Week 1 on a High

Lazio came into this game knowing that they could ill-afford more dropped points this early in the season after a disappointing 1-0 loss to CSKA was followed by a bore 0-0 draw with Bolton. This would be no easy task as they faced off against the defending champs, Hamburg to close off Week 1. Lazio came out with a point to prove and were the stronger of the two sides but headed into halftime 0-0 as the team was only able to get one of their 7 total shots on target. In the second half T. Rocchi entered in the 55th minute and he seems to add a real spark to the team, as the continued to pour forward. In the 69th minute they would get their reward as Andre Dias rose to mee the crossed in corner with his head, and reacted the quickest after it clanged off the post to head it back into the net from a yard out, giving Lazio their first goal of the season!! Instead of resting on that one goal lead Lazio knew that Hamburg were a dangerous team, and decided to look for another goal. In the 82nd minute a corner from the opposite side was met by the head of Rocchi, who also clanged it off the post before it hit off Jarolim who was unable to stop it from rolling in. 2-0 the final and the team can now look forward to next week's matches boasting one of, if not the most, stout defense in the league after week 1.

    Reflections on Week 1:

"Well looking at our schedule to start off the year we realized that we would get no easy breaks early. Coming from Palermo I would have hoped that we could have had a longer preaseason to get my system in place, but that was not a viable option. Then when you look at our first 3 opponents, the defending Serie A champions in Hamburg, the runners-up in CSKA, and a Bolton side led by a very capable and wily vet in hedache who was able to guide Bursaspor to a top 5 finish last year, we knew that points would be at a premium to start. Our first game against CSKA was probably our worst showing, as the jitters were obvious for everyone to see. We gave up a poor goal after letting Vagner Love clean through on goal and we just could not capitalize on the very few opportunities we had. The game in England against Bolton wasn't much better, but Zarate's late shot that cannoned off the cross-bar could have very easily seen us steal the 3 points in that game. The last game against Hamburg was our best performance so far. I feel like we dominated a team that's credentials are clear for everyone to see, and we were able to use 2 second half corner kicks to seal the victory. We will be working on getting more opportunities from open play, but as for now we are content with the 4 points we were able to gain after week 1."

Hernanes Shines as Team Picks up 7 Points out of Possible 9 This Week

We caught up with the Lazio coach Zikry after his recent 5-2 friendly victory over Udinese to ask him about the performances of the team this past week:

Q: How do you feel your team performed this week?

Z: "Well to be honest I am disappointed we did not collect all 9 points this week. We were indeed lucky to pick up all 3 points against Bibao but I feel that we should have won comfortably against Fulham. All credit to that team for holding us to a 1-1 tie but I really feel like we lost 2 points in that one"

Q: Has the team been focusing on scoring off set pieces?

Z: "What kind of question is that?!?! Ofcourse we always practice on scoring off set pieces. Against Hamburg last week we got both our goals off corners, and this week we needed two Hernanes free kicks to get a point off Fulham in the 1-1 draw and to collect all 3 points against Bilbao in the 1-0 win. We are still struggling mightily to score from open play but we tried some new things in this recent friendly win against Udinese and I think you will be seeing alot more of Kozak up front given our struggles."

Q: Have the team goals changed at all after the first 6 games of the season?

Z: "Not at all. I came in here wanting to make sure that this team would finish in the top 6, and that is still the goal. A top half finish is always my goal wherever I coach. Would we want to finish as league champions? Sure, who the hell wouldn't?? But for now we are taking it one game at a time and our primary focus is to avoid being part of the relegation battle and hopefully aim at winning the Cup this year as well. That would be a successful year in my view.

Q: Floccari has come out and criticized your style of play, saying that you are not using him to the best of his abilities. Any comments on this?

Z: Have you seen our first 6 games?!?! Can you remember anything that Floccari has done in those games?!?! A great player doesn't complain about the system, he just does what the coach says and let's his talents do the talking. Sergio doesn't need to worry about his abilities next week as he will be sitting cozily on the bench alongside the rest of our subs. That's all I have to say now.

    Lazio Learn Cup Fate

    Rome, Italy

After moving from Palermo after a successful cup campaign that saw the Sicilians crowned as champions, Coach Zikry decided to try out a new adventure with fellow Italian club Lazio. Coming into the club Zikry knew that there were two main goals he wanted to achieve this year: a top 5 finish in the league, and a successful run in the cup. With the draw having taken place only a few hours ago, Lazio now know their fate. In a twist of 'destiny' after some offseason war of words between the Lazio head coach and the Bremen boss, Lazio have been pitted to face off against the winner of Santos vs Bremen. While Lazio is ready to face either of these two teams, they will certainly be pushing for Bremen to win this one to set up the titanic clash between these two sides. While Santos and their new boss Roger certainly are no slouches and would be very tough opponents, the extra intrigue of facing off against xyzvld22 would make that game one of the games of the round for sure. Stay tuned as we await the result from this 1st round game to know who Lazio will be hosting in round 2 of the competition.

    Reflections on Week 3:

Picture Perfect Week for Muslera sees him land POTW honors for Lazio

Player of the Week: After Hernanes won the award last week for his 2 goals, Muslera gets the award this week for his 3 clean sheets on the week and his outstanding play overall, including some simply incredible saves against Wolfsburg. Muslera has 7 clean sheets in the team's first 9 games, and seems well on his way to collecting the golden glove for best keeper in Serie A if he continues on this streak.

Week Review: Another week and with 7 points collected it seems that Lazio have found some-what of a groove halfway through the season. After collecting only 4 points in the first week the team has collected 7 points in back to back weeks to cement their place as one of the top clubs in the league. After a disappointing draw away to Sunderland in which the team missed serveral opportunities, including two breakaway 1-on-1 chances for Zarate, the team rebounded well and were able to give Lille their first loss of the season before beating a decent Wolfsburg team 2-0. The last game against Wolfsburg saw both forwards start to get a sense for each other, as Zarate assisted Kozak's goal before Kozak returned the favor for Zarate's goal. The main striker position has been a cause for concern for this team, as Rocchi/Flocarri/Kozak fight for that position, but after the horrible showings by Flocarri and the emergence of Kozak it seems like it is not Kozak's position to lose, as the team finally seems to have some stability to it.

Looking forward: The upcoming match-week will be a strange one for Lazio as they will only have 1 game, and not the 3 they have been used to. With the Palermo game being postponed and no cup game in round 1, the team will have the whole week to prepare to face a tough and compact Everton squad that can cause any team problems if they are given the time to do so, especially the danger-men in Saha and Cahill. Look for Cahill to be closely marked down by Ledesma, while the wing-backs will need to be up to their best to stop the attacks on the wing, especially Seamus Coleman who has already shown he can punish a side that backs off against him. It will be interesting to see how Lazio perform given that this will be their only game this week.

    on Week 4/5:

Player of the Week: With his hat-trick and 2 assist performance in the cup game alone, along with the winner against Bolton at the death, Zarate is the player of the week this week. The striker partnership has been the biggest headache for coach Zikry as he continues to shuffle the starting line-up around to try and find the best partnership, but hopefully this past week is where the team can turn the corner and start performing up to their potential.

Roundup: Lazio did something they have never done previously this season; give up a goal in a game and end up winning the game. While they gave up a goal in the cup game, they were already 3-0 up at that point, but to come back from a 1-0 deficit against Bolton and end up winning the game lifted the whole team this week, especially as they came back from being down to 10 men and still ended up as winners. With Hamburg being unavailable this week for their game, the week has officially ended for Lazio as they scramble to see who they will have replace left-back Radu and CM Ledesma for the crunch game against CSKA next week. Being 9 points behind the Serie A leaders Lazio cannot afford anything other than the 3 points that game if they want even the smallest of hopes of being crowned champions this week. With that in mind look for Lazio to approach the game with a much more attacking style than they are used to.
