Fiorentina opens Serie C Season with thrilling 1-0 victory in Turkey
In an action packed season opener, Fiorentina opened their account with a 1-0 away victory against Galatasaray The home side started brightly creating a chance inside the box that saw Eboue's volley go wide of the posts. Fiorentina then took control of possession in the first half creating multiple chances - with Gilardino hitting woodwork twice. The pressure was on and the home side couldn't close out the half as MoM Ricardo Montolivo put away a long low shot from 25 yards into the corner during the first half injury time.
The second half saw a different home side as the manager surely fired the team up. They slowly took control of the game behind their rabid fan support. Dominant in midfield, Gala maintained possession and pushed hard for an equalizer as the away side absorbed the pressure looking for the counter. The home side almost saw an equalizer as Baros put in a strike that hit the woodwork with the keeper nowhere to be found. It was the closest they would come to claiming a point in this encounter as Fiorentina claimed all the points in a bright start to their campaign. The home side deserved at least a point from their second half resurgence and will certainly rue their missed chances.

Fiorentina wasteful at home in 0-0 draw versus Bolton
Fiorentina and Bolton played to a 0-0 draw as the home side couldn’t find the break through needed against a stubborn Bolton defense. The match started slowly with the play mainly concentrated in mid-field. Fiorentina controlled possession while creating minimal chances the first 25 mins – with the best chance falling to Bolton against the run of play when a volley was struck inside the box although straight to the keeper. Fiorentina responded strongly to end the half with Gilardino wasting a golden chance when his chip hit the woodwork with the keeper well beaten.
The second half saw some dominance from the home side as they pushed for a winner –but they apparently left their shooting boots in the locker room as they could not find the target in most of their shots. Bolton leaves Italy with a valuable point in the young season thanks to their brave defending, leaving the home side frustrated with their start of the campaign.

Gilardino's first half strike enough to give Fiorentina 1-0 win against Derby County

Fiorentina picks up first win of the season with a hard fought 1-0 win away at Derby County. Gilardino heads home the winner at the 38 minute - converting a cross from Montolivo. Both teams struggled to take control of the game - but there were still plenty of chances on both end after the opener. Fiorentina almost doubled their lead when MoM Vargas missed the goal from a rebound after a great save from a powerful close range free kick. Derby County pushed for the equalizer but wasted a couple of good chances late in the second half with a couple shots barely going wide. In the end, Fiorentina will go back to Italy with all 3 points and Derby looking to rebound against Parma. It was a spirited display in front of their supporters but they head home with nothing to show for it.

Boruc and Fiorentina continues impressive form with 2-0 win over Parma

Fiorentina records 4th clean sheet in as many games in an up and down affair. The visitors started brightly with early pressure on Boruc's post - sending a couple strikes just off target - one a venomous volley just inches wide. The home side settled in and got into the game with some counter attacking football but the first half was an even affair until Gamberini headed home the opener from a corner.

The 2nd half saw more control from the home side, but the visitors pressed for an equalizer however unable to find the target with their open chances. Gilardino sealed the deal with a low shot into the near post in the 67 minute. Fiorentina had multiple chances on the open counter as Parma pressed forward but in the end it would be 2-0.

Good game DrunkenSoldier -- would have been completely different game had you taken a couple of those early and late chances...

1-nil to Fiorentina as Boruc records another clean sheet in Germany

Fiorentina travelled to Germany and brought home all 3 points in another close encounter in Serie C. Fiorentina continued their defenesive streak as the home side could not find the net. MoM Vargas put in a one-time low shot in the corner - with help from a slight deflection in a tightly contested first half. The home side controlled the tempo as Fiorentina couldnt sustain much of a build up - playing the counter with the goal advantage. IT was another typical display from the visitors side - going up by a goal and hanging on as Stuttgart tried to find the equalizer that never came.

Boruc to the rescue as Fiorentina hangs on for a 1-0 win in Group B

Fiorentina surprises Udinese at home as they survive a rough 1-0 win against the Serie A team. It was a midfield battle that started slowly in the first half as both teams tried to control the pitch. The home team was heavily reliant on what is becoming a stingy defense as they pushed back the visitors time and time again. Out of nowhere, the home side was in front when Gilardino bundles in a cross from Cerci.

The second half saw the visitors press for the equalizer - with most of the game played in the home's side of the pitch. Boruc made a few amazing stops in the last 15 hectic minutes, as he produces another clean sheet for his side. Udinese will rue not taking their chances and will find themselves unlucky going home empty handed in a game they should have at least shared the spoils.

Fiorentina picks up second victory in Group B against Santos 1-0

It was another typical match for Fiorentina as they take away all 3 points in Brazil with a 1-0 win vs Santos. It was another early lead for La Viola as Gilardino tucks away a header from short range after some hard work from Vargas on the touchline. The first half continued to be back and forth as Neymar and Santos used their pace to attack causing issues for the visitors. There should have been more goals in the first half from both side. The second half saw more attacking but mostly from the home side - as Fiorentina was content to counter. Neymar began to create more in the wings and working into the box, and twice the home side should have equalized from short range - but somehow the shots went high off the target. It would be another dramatic end for what is becoming a typical Fiorentina game as the home side pushed for an equalizer - but their chances went wide. It was another clean sheet for Boruc, making it 8 straight games - however there's still some work to be done on the final third.

Fiorentina tops the Group of Death with vital point in Germany

Newcomers Fiorentina surprises and tops Group B with a 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen. Knowing only a point is required to secure top spot, Fiorentina traveled to Germany depending on their defense to once again carry them. However, an early 4' opener from Arnautovic provided the home team the boost needed in this win or go home match - this also ended Boruc's 8 game clean sheet streak. It would be La Viola's offense that would pick up as Gilardino equalized in the 38' from within 6 yards. The half looked to be heading for a 1-1 draw until Marin picked up a pass inside the box, and with a defender on his shirt, whipped a cracker into the far corner post - not even Boruc can stop that. The second half saw a true battle. It started brightly for the away side as Jovetic drove thru the box and picked out Gilardino once again, while covered with 3 green shirts, volleyed home the equalizer from short range. The cup holders had a couple more chances, but the best one was near the final whistle on what was the final attack. After some quick buildup, Marin found himself again receiving a pass just inside the box with just Boruc to beat - but this time the GK wins the battle and gathered in his strike. Fiorentina goes home with the vital point knowing they have secured their spot in the knockout stages as the top team from the group of death.

Fiorentina gets back to winning with 2-0 win at Genoa

In a makeup game, La Viola got back to defense and winning with early strikes in the first half. The away side dominated the early goings as they controlled the the tempo and game, putting up shots on goal. They opened up the game with a quick counter as they took possession in midfield and a Gilardino tucked in a breakaway for the opener. The away side continued to attack as put more emphasis on offense, and it pays off as this time Gilardino found Behrami on a quick one two outside the box and Behrami slid it under the keeper to double up Genoa. Genoa put in a scare to almost close the gap as Boruc misjudges a low shot from distance and the ball slipped under him, only to find the woodwork. From there, Fiorentina coasted into the half knowing their defense can close out the game.

Genoa had other plans in the second half as they upped the tempo and pressed for a goal. They had another shot - an open short range header in front of goal - to hit the woodwork. They got no goals from there spirited start of the 2nd half, and Fiorentina slowly setup their defense looking to counter. Fiorentina picked up all 3 points that would be critical in keeping pace on the table toppers Celtic and Montpelier. Knowing they've dropped 5 points in the last 2 games, this was a vital win for their campaign.

Fiorentina loses first game 1-0 at home to Montpellier in battle for promotion
Fiorentina tastes its first defeat as Montpelier visited their grounds and dominated early. It was a matchup of the most explosive team versus the best defensive team, and the first leg goes to the offense. The away side should have been up going into the half, but La Viola battled with their defense to keep the home team in it by half. Utaka finally broke thru shrugging off his marker with ease and putting in a clinical finish against Boruc. The home side woke up and put in a flurry inthe last 30 minutes of the game, pressing for an equalizer but Montpellier stubborn defense held on for the clean sheet and all 3 points for a spot on the top 2 of the table.

La Viola dip in form sees more dropped points as they draw 1-1 at home

Fiorentina loses another 2 points in the race for promotion as the season hits the midway point. After securing top spot at the Coppa, La Viola has suddenly hit a dip in form as they drew 1-1 to Galatasaray in Italy. Gilardino opened the game with a long distance shot banking it in the inside of the far post. The home side had chances to break the game open within the first half hour but didnt take any of their chances - most not even hitting the target. The away side gained confidence as the first half ended. The second half started with Gala pressing for the equalizer -- they slowly started controlling the game as Fiorentina managed only counter attacks - missing a couple good chances. The introduction of Riera would change the game -- as he collected a thru pass from a mid-field turnover and spotted Khazim Khazim in the box unmarked for a volley that Boruc had no chance on. From then, both teams tried to take all the points but neither was able to take foot of the game as they shared the points.

Fiorentina sparks in 4-2 win over Bolton
La Violas scoring boots were on for once scoring 4 goals as Gilardino nets his first hat trick in a 4-2 win in England. The Italians controlled the tempo of the game and applied pressure early and often, but couldnt break free - hitting the woodwork a couple times in the early going. Then 10 minutes before the half, Gilardino scored the opener with another header in front of goal. The game broke open as the away side doubled their lead when Jovetic was first to a rebound - cutting to the inside and banking it in the inside of the top bar. The second half saw much of the same, but Bolton cut the lead by half from a set piece. The ball was sent into the box, and the defense couldnt clear it - ricocheting and landing nicely in front of Petrov -who made no mistake about it with a nice strike. But then, Gilardino went to work as he chipped in from a break and used his head again to complete his hat trick. K. Davies scored late as La Viola allowed more than 1 goal for the first time in League play - something the manager was not happy about. In the end, it was a needed 3 pts as Fiorentina keeps pace with the table toppers.

La Viola outlasts Parma in 5-3 shootout
The defense for both sides didnt show up as Fiorentina and Parma put out 8 goals with La Viola picking up all 3 points in an exciting affair. Fiorentina's stifling defense was quickly shocked with an early opener by Valdes within 5 minutes for the home side. It took awhile, but Fiorentina slowly controlled the first half, maintaining possession and looking for their target man Gilardino. With 3 minutes left in the first half, Cassani found him for the equalizer. In injury time, Vargas found time to score the go ahead goal just outside the box.

The second half would be a classic - with Fiorentina still controlling the flow, Montolivo doubled up the lead with a long range one hopper from way outside that caught the GK by surprised. La Viola had few chances to put the game away but in a swift counter move by the home team, the lead was cut by one as Babiany was the first to react on a great save by Boruc. But as they say, even before the celebration ended, it was Gilardino again who restored the 2 goal lead - putting away a headed pass inside the box. Parma would not go away however as they struck just within the last minute with a screamer 20 yards out - but Fiorentina managed to keep the ball away and Gilardino picked up his hat trick with yet another header for the 5-3 score line. It was an exciting affair but Fiorentina's manager must be relieved to take all the points - but he is hoping this was just an off day for his defense as they gave up 3 goals.

Fiorentina keeps pace on top with 3-1 win against Stuttgart
Fiorentina picks up 3 points in the chase for promotion, keeping pace with table setters Celtic and Montpelier. La Viola started early from a set corner piece as Gamberini headed home from close range. Gilardino quickly doubled up when he found space just outside the box and curled one into the corner as they cruised into the half. The home side struck first after the break - as Vargas was first to a thru ball - just beating the keeper and slotting home into an empty net. The clean sheet was ruined though 3 minutes from time as Stuttgart found space to break - Boruc did well to save the initial shot but Gebhart made no mistake with the long rebound with a fierce strike.

In yet another tough contest between these two teams, only a long range effort from Vargas in injury separated the two teams. With barely any chances in the game, the two teams looked to share the points. With time dwindling, Vargas found a little space from 25 yards out before curling in a long range effort that hit the inside far post and banked into the back of the net. Fiorentina will be happy with taking the lucky 3 points as they continue to climb the tables.

Fight for promotion ends in draw as Fiorentina and Celtic fires up blanks
In a battle of two of the top teams in Serie C, there would be no fireworks nor winner as the top 2 defensive units showed their mettle. It was the away side however that bossed the field for most of the game - especially the second half when the home side couldnt muster a single shot at all. It was a stifling defensive game where the best highlights were Boruc making a few amazing saves to keep the clean sheet. Celtic also saw woodwork on a fierce strike - hitting the outside of the far post. Celtic probably deserved all the points, but La Viola will take one and look forward to a tough remaining schedule.
Both teams are still in the battle with Montpellier for the top 2 spots that will see them promoted to Serie B - with Fiorentina and Montpellier facing each other i in the very last game of the season.
GG BigSmooth - couldnt get thru your midfield there at all...great D....

Fiorentina and Montpellier draws 0-0 in battle for honors in Serie C
Fiorentina wasn't able to exact revenge against Montpellier, the only team to beat them so far this season. The return leg would follow much of the same script, however the French side dominated much of the game - at least offensively. Once again, it was Boruc making some timely saves and with the help of the woodwork as well for the clean sheet. With the loss of Gilardino, Amauri was not able to gel with the team quite yet - often too slow to do any damage in the box. Both teams needed a win to take full control of the league, but it will not be the case. The draw gives La Viola control of their own destiny on their path to League Champions. It's been a tight race from the beginning, and anything can happen - as Fiorentina can win the league or drop to 3rd spot pending their last game against Genoa.

Fiorentina edges closer to the top of Serie C with 2-0 home win against Athletic Bilbao
Playing only their second game with new ST Amauri, La Viola was able to pick up a vital 3 points against their Spanish opponent at home as Jovetic opened things within half an hour and Boruc and the stout defense doing the rest. Behrami assured the home side all 3pts two minutes from time. With their primary goal scorer Gilardino moving to Genoa, La Viola had to find other ways to score as Amauri showed he has yet grasped their attacking style - just a few steps too slow.
The win moves Fiorentina tied on top of the league with Monpellier - behind on Goal Difference which at this point is impossible to overcome. However, they have one more game to complete out the season and a single point can propel Fiorentina above Montpellier and 3 points will see them claim the league. That final game though will be against Genoa - facing a familiar face in Gilardino who has helped La Viola reach this stage of the season. Celtic also has one more game - travelling to Parma = where a win and a Fiorentina draw will win the Irish club the league. Serie C will be decided with both of these games.

Wasteful Fiorentina slips and falters in Championship ambition with a 2-2 draw at home
After a long layoff, Fiorentina failed to gain all 3 points required to win the Serie C Trophy at their own pitch. Fellow Italians came in and took advantage of the few chances they garnered and managed a 2-2 draw. There was a slightly controversial penalty given that provided a 2-1 cushion for Genoa - but it only took a couple minutes for La Viola to tie up again - that led to a nervy end to the game. La Viola pushed the entire second half for the winner but was unable to break through Frey who had an amazing game of remarkable saves. Fiorentina managed 23 shots altogether - but Frey was up to the job for most of them.

With the draw - Fiorentina only moves up to second place, 1 point above Montpellier...making Celtic the Serie C champions. Fiorentina will rue their missed opportunities but they can feel good about moving up to Serie B next season.

Successful season ends in disappointment as Fiorentina is denied a Trophy
The trophy was there for Fiorentina to take. All they needed was 3 points or another stellar performance from their vaunted defense and GK - however, Genoa converts 2 of their 4 chances on swift counters and denies La Viola from capturing their trophy. Manager Hokie79 was very critical on his team after their performance - calling them naive to be beaten so easily on defensive end even after a dominating performance. It just wasnt meant to be but rumors are that the manager may be left thinking about his future in Italy - with a few clubs inquiring about his availability.

    Manager leaves Italy for London
Manager Hokie79 has decided to leave Fiorentina only after 1 season. He has secured a new position at Craven Cottage to manage Fulham FC - one step closer to his dream job at Arsenal FC. "It was a tough decision - a move that I almost didn't make. However, it is now done and I must focus on my next challenge. I wish La Viola the best of luck and I hope I can bring a trophy to Craven Cottage."
