A relatively close and clean match ended up in Shakhtar's favor as the Donbass Arena due to a late goal by substitute Fred which was dished to him by substitute Luiz Adriano. The game started with both teams getting chances early on and feeling each other out.

However, the boys from Moskow would get the lead on their former USSR compatriots through a long throw courtesy of Mbark Boussoufa which was poorly defended, if defended at all, by Shakhtar. Former Tottenham and Dinamo Moscow striker Roman Pavlyuchenko took advantage by way of a beautiful scissor kick from 12 yards out which beat Andriy Pyatov to make it 1-0.

Shakhtar would fight back as the Ukrainian champions found new signing from Atletico Mineiro Bernard down the line. Bernard showed why teams like Shakhtar, Arsenal, and Tottenham were after him by throwing in a perfect cross to new signing Wellington Nem who rose above the Lokomotiv defenders to head it home and pull the game even.

In the 28th, Lokomotiv got a chance when Yanbaev found his way down the right flank and crossed for Felipe Caicedo. The former Man City man headed toward goal but it was straight at Pyatov.

In the 38th, Pavlyuchenko was threaded through for the 1v1 via the bounce from a Shakhtar steal but his first touch shot running across the face of goal was stopped by a rushing Pyatov.

In the 43rd, Bernard and Taison exchanged passes for a link up play which resulted in two defenders closing down Bernard in the corner as Taison broke inside of them. Bernard found Taison but the former Metalist winger couldn't slip it through from a tight angle and it went out for a corner which resulted in nothing.

In the 45th, Bernard ran inside near the byline and crossed low for the back post. The ball deflected off a defender and straight to Taison but rather than one touch tap it home, Taison tried to take a touch 3 feet from goal and Guilherme was able to jump on it.

In the 45th, Wellington Nem was threaded through the middle for a 1v1. The Brazilian tried to turn around Guilherme to make an angle for the shot but Guilherme did well to throw his body in front of the shot. At half time, it was 1-1.

The second half saw the midfield become a very congested area and neither team really had room to move. Both teams repeatedly lost the ball back and forth and not many chances were created. Lokomotov through on Victor Obinna at half and Dame Ndoye in the 79th. Shakthar through on Fred and Luiz Adriano in the 79th.

It was Fred who would grab the winner just 3 minutes after coming on when Luiz Adriano blocked a Lokomotiv pass and spotted Fred making a run behind the defense. Adriano played it, an offsides Taison jumped over the ball (without him being called) and the ball found its way through several Lokomotiv defenders to Fred who one touch curled it around the keeper for the winner.

Lokomotiv would push for the winner late and Ndoye would get a 1v1 chance thanks to a long through ball. However, his blasted shot from the edge of the box was knocked well wide by the finger tips of the rushing Pyatov.

In the 88th, a corner would find the head of Maicon from very close range but again, Pyatov tipped it over. The game finished 2-1 in favor of the Ukraine champions. GG electric

    Marseille 0 - Sporting Lisbon 2

    Marseille

    Lisbon
    :goal:
    Carrillo 5' :assist:Fredy Montero
:goal:Diego Capel 9' :assist: Fredy Montero
    :trophy:Fredy Montero 8.8

Very exciting first match of the year for both squads. Lisbon was able to come up with some momentum after a quick first two goals within the first 10 minutes of the match. Fredy Montero was able to hold up the ball on both goals and distribute to his wingers for the finishes. Diego Capel was able to find the side netting after a beautifully place chip over the keeper. Marseille was able to posses the ball a little bit more than Lisbon and came very close to making things interesting with a rip from Payet outside the box that glanced off the post in the 83'. Not much else happened after that and Lisbon was able to pick up 3 points in their first match. Good game abolishthefed

    Lokomotiv 5 - 1 Marseille

    :goal:Pav :assist:Boussoufa
    :goal:Boussoufa :assist:Zapater
    :goal:Pav :assist:Maicon
    :goal:Maicon :assist:Boussoufa

FCLM found its groove early in this one with Boussoufa slotting home a Pav pass in the 2'. Khalifa managed a nice headed goal to level the match just 6 minutes later in the 8'. Pav gave the home team the lead in the 31' with a diving header from a Boussoufa cross, and Lokomotiv never looked back. Boussoufa found the back of the net again in the 42', with a 20 yard shot that just beat Steve Mandanda at the far post. Pav and Maicon found the scoresheet to round out the performance.

    GG abolishthefed! Good luck!

    Sporting Lisbon 2 - Shakhtar Donetsk 1

Not exactly sure of who scored because my xbox froze when i was looking for the match facts. But this game was a pretty exciting, crazy, and fast-paced one. Shakhtar Donetsk was able to string together some nice passes all game and had many great chances throughout the game. Rui Patricio game up huge with a ton of saves behind his struggling and confused back line who couldnt seem to clear the ball. Fredy Montero was able to head home the opening goal with a well placed cross from Carrillo on the wing. Shakhtar Donetsk goal came on some confusion(well really a misplaced pass that was supposed to go back to the keeper) as the defender pass it across the middle of the field which was intercepted by Wellington Nem i believe who was able to beat the unstoppable Patricio. Lisbon was able to get back on top with the Shakhtar Donetsk defense not being able to clear out a free kick that Lisbon was able to just barely put past the scrambling keeper. The last ten minutes were hectic, but Lisbon were able to hold on to earn 6 points in the first game week. great game Michael Woodward

The HSV faithful, who made the long journey to Glasgow for the team's season opener vs. Celtic FC, were rewarded in a big way. The northern-Germany club thrashed the Celts to the tune of 4 goals, as part of a score line which good have easily been worse had it not been for goalkeeper heroics.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga, so nice they named him twice, opened up the scoring as he made a diagonal run across the celtic back-line starting on the right side. The HSV youngster Hakan Calhanoglu picked him out with a clever pass as Mulgrew struggled to keep pace. Lasogga powered past two defenders and slid for the ball, which went under the on rushing keeper.

Lasogga gave nightmares to the celtic inside two all game. 21 Maximilian Beister found himself in considerable space on the right side in the 36', however he neglected to take on the lone defender, rather he played an early ball into the 16 for an on rushing Lasogga, who made no mistake, towering over Ambrose and Mulgrew and powering the ball into the bottom right corner. 2-0 HSV.

After a scramble in the box in the 42', the goal scoring hero became goal provider. Pierre-Michel intercepted a poor celtic clearance and slotted a clever through pass to the forward Milan Badelj. Badelj doesn't find himself 1 on 1 with the keeper very often as his initial shot was saved by Forster, however Badelj made no mistake with the rebound and HSV cruised to a 3-0 lead.

Poor play by the HSV back-line occurred in the 48' as Rajkovic and Djourou tried their best tiki-taka impression. The pass was read by the veteran and celtic captain scott brown and he slotted home the celtic consolation goal. 1-3 HSV.

The captain and hamburg pearl, Rafael van der Vaart cemented his great performance in the 51' min as he intercepted another poor celtic clearance at the top of the 16 and put a hard low left footed shot by an unsuspecting celtic goalkeeper. Unsatisfied with his GK's performance, coach Neil Lennon pulled Forster immediately. An exchange of words followed on the sidelines as the celtic ace stormed past the team bench into the tunnel.

HSV youngster Pierre-Michel Lasogga, who was acquired from the german outfit Hertha Berlin in the summer, was awarded man of the match honors.

    Villareal CF [1] v Hamburg SV [1]

The game got off to a very rough start for the yellow submarine with hamburg controlling the game early on and through the entirety of the first half really. The Yellow submarine defense held tough as hamburg peppered the goalie with shots from all around and time and again the keeper was up to the challenge. But in the 33rd minute hamburg finally got the break through with what the announcer inside the stadium called a 'golazo!!!' and a screamer from maybe 30 yards out found the bottom left corner of the net. Villareal were shaken and hamburg could have scored again but into the half it went 1-0.

During the break the yellow submarine made a few changes to the gameplan, getting more offensive after a half where the yellow submarine faithful were not pleased. The second half was a much better performance from the homeside and in the 57th minute the attacking play was rewarded when Bruno found Cani at the top of the box and after a classy turn on the center back gently tucked the tying goal into the bottom right corner. The game really began to open up after that, really going up and down with both sides looking for the win and after missed chance and missed chance by both sides, Villareal found themselves with an open net in the 90th minute after a ball came across the face of goal, but Perreira was only able to parry it at the post and the chance went begging. The match ends in a 1-1 draw. Great Game Salty!

    Villarreal CF [4] v Atletico Bilbao [1]

After drawing their first home encounter the yellow submarine wanted to see their team get off to a much better start this game, and they were not disappointed. The game was up and down both halves, and in the first ten minutes the home side was rewarded with some what of a lucky goal when Gio dos Santos headed the ball at goal, it came off the far pole only to be pushed in by a bilbao player. The statisticians were generous giving the mexican the goal despite it looking like a clear own goal. Bilbao would not be down for long when Rico, with a spectacular bicycle kick, tied it up off of a set piece. With the game all tied up and ready to go into halftime, Pina powered a header from a corner into the goal giving the yellow submarine a lead in the 45th minute.

In the second half villarreal came out strong and opened up the scoring with a Cani goal in the 51st minute to force bilbao to push forward. And as bilbao pushed for the goal more chances were created for the home side but just couldn't capitalize. Uche got his moment to shine in the 57th minute when he put away the fourth for the home side off of some nice build up play. Villarreal did want to go for more but just couldn't put anymore goals away and bilbao just couldn't seem to get enough space to even fire off a shot in the second half. The headline in the spanish press 'toque bonito, como villarreal!' Good game Jon Mk, see you later in the season!

Borussia M'Gladbech waited a while to get there first game of the season under there belt and they were ready for it with a big win in Celtic. Borussia came out with a lot of speed and quick passes that Celtic could not contain. They had the early lead but Celtic come back quick with some nice work down the right side which found Stokes in the box for the header. After that Celtic couldn't do much more in the first half with Borussia had most of the play and netted in three more goals before the half. Celtic came out strong but couldn't get by the Borussia defense which had a great game. Good Game niuhuskie224

    Villarreal [3] @ Marseille [1]

Dominant performance from the yellow submarine. From the get go Villarreal came out, wanting to instill its style of play and were very successful in doing so. MoTM, Cani, was unbelievable in his performance today and his two goals were payment for that performance. Villarreal got on the score sheet early in the 9th minute with a Cani goal and never looked back. Cani doubled the lead in the 23rd minute and it was cruise control from there for the yellow submarines. Looking to keep possession throughout they were willing the pass it around the back and slowly build up the play with the center backs performing lovely switches to get villarreals playmakers into space.

After the break it was the mexican, Aquino, who gave villarreal a three goal lead but it would not last long as a mistake in the back gave marseille a lifeline and a goal early in the second half. The game went on with both sides pushing for more goals but 3-1 it finished, and a good result for the away side. Lot of fortune for the yellow submarine as marseille squandered two great chances in the first half and couldn't find the back of the net. If one of those two shots go in the game would have been completely different. Good game, abolishthefed

    Lokomotiv 3 - 2 Sporting Lisbon

    Goals:
    Denisov > Boussoufa
    Zapater > Boussoufa
    Maicon

    Labyad > Capel
    Capel > Carrillo

Lokomotiv jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to the unlikeliest of scorers, Vitaliy Denisov. No one could explain why the left back was at the top of the box, but Boussoufa saw he was open and gave him the ball. Zapater managed to double the lead on a header from a Boussoufa cross. Sporting came out firing in the second half, with Labyad tapping home a rebound to cut the Lokomotiv lead to 2-1. Digeo Capel managed to find the back of the net with a header of his own to level the match. Again, Maicon found a way to snatch a late goal at home, this time to give FCLM full points.

Another great game, KoG CHEESEDIP! Good luck!

Well there's not much to say about this match. In the first half, Bibao had most of the possession but didn't get much shot on net. In the second half both teams play better with quality chance but couldn't beat the keeper which they were very good in this game. Good Game Jon MK

    S1W2 Game

    Bilbao 1 - 2 Marseille

    Bilbao
    :goal: Aduriz 76'
    Benat (OG) 87'
    :trophy: LB Balenzlaga

    Marseille
    :goal: Gignac 82' :assist: Valbuena
    :yellowcard: Imbula

This game was a defensive matchup for the first 70', as neither offense could get untracked in the rain. Then, Bilbao broke the ice after a pass was deflected deep into Marseille's end of the field. Aduriz was able to score on a nice chip for the 1-0 lead. Marseille answered 6' later on a header from Gignac. Both teams were pushing the pace late, but Marseille was able to force a corner. They hit a nice header in the box that was botched by Bilbao defender Benat for an own goal and a 2-1 Marseille late lead. GG Jon MK. Tough to lose on the OG.

Dominant performance from the yellow submarines as they came out ready to make a statement against the mighty german side. The game started off a bit sloppy from both sides and was really tied up in the midfield when the mexican, aquino, broke the deadlock with what some would consider a wonderstrike. Taking the ball across the center of the 18 yard box, and with his weaker foot blasting a shot into the goal to open the mark. The away side was riding high in confidence and it showed in their play. Controlling possession and at times frustrating the german side, and it wouldn't be long before the yellow submarine got on the board again, and it was Aquino again who got the goal. When Gio put a cross into the box, when Tomas Pina controlled, slid a ball over to Aquino who made no mistake. Into halftime it went 2-0, with the german side always looking threatening going forward but just couldn't seem to find the back of the net.

The second half was much of the same, the germans pressing and the yellow submarine looking to control the ball, the second half wore on and what looked like a german comeback taking place and the villarreal goal getting peppered with shots, it was the away side that scored the third goal. This time it was Uche who got on the end of a cross, hit the cross bar but was able to get the round for the clincher. Towards the end of the game the away side added a fourth and the game finished 4-0. Dominant scoreline from the away side but had the germans been on with their shots could have been entirely different. GG Ricky Boots

    Villarreal [3] v Lokomotiv [2]

A Game that lived up to its prematch hype, back and forth all game long and really a performance that probably should have had the russians coming away with some points. The russians looked to rough up the smaller Spaniards in the middle of the park and for the most part it did render the attacking trio of the yellow submarine inert but in the 29th minute a penalty gave villarreal the chance that they hadn't been able to create and Gio dos Santos would not miss. Placing a penalty perfectly into the top corner, where not even a diving the right way Guilherme could stop it. The lead would not last long however, as Pav, the former spurs man, who had done nothing right all half, blasted a shot into the post and in for the equalizer. Into the half the game went 1-1.

Lokomotiv, came out the second half with two changes, looking for all three points but it was villarreal, in the 60th minute that pulled ahead. After a lokomotiv foul 31 yards out, it was the mexican again, Gio Dos Santos with a goal of the year candidate, beautifully taking a free kick and again placing it into the top corner of the goal. However, yet again, the lead would not last long as Boussoufa found the equalizer just three minutes later. 2-2 after 63 minutes of game time with neither team looking to back down. Both teams made changes looking for the win but nothing came to fruition until the 90th minute for the yellow submarine. In what some might consider a huge error from the keeper (others might call it great goalkeeping!), Bruno fired a shot from the top of the box at the bottom corner, which the keeper saved but the rebound fell nicely to dos Santos who blasted it in for what would turn out to be the winner. This wasn't it though, as lokomotiv did have a chance to draw level but the whipped in cross could only be pushed wide by Calcedo. Game ends 3-2 in favor of the home side in a thriller.
