Lewandowski was a beast and the defense was solid today vs Ireland. Hopefully our offense gets a little more fluid as we go. Good game dave okeeffe

Wonderful match between 2 European powers as Austria hosted Italia in a WC Qualifier today. This was a game of who's midfield was better, as most of the match was played in the middle third of the pitch. Austria had all their "reigistered" shots on goal in the 1st half, while Italy could not seem to break loose for any opportunities. The 2nd half was a flip-flop, as Itally was more dominating and attacking. If not for Austria's defenders, there would likely have been far more SOG, but they deflected a few to keep pressure off their keeper. The turning point was on a Giovinco run that the defender poked away to the wing, right to Candreva, who placed a perfect cross to Immobile for the goal. Austria had their chances at the end but the Italians tightened up their defense and the only ball Sirgu had to defend in the final minutes was a through ball that he barely got to before the striker could put foot to it. This was a great matchup and we expect our home half to be just as nerve wrecking!

The Orange open their World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw at home against group favorite Portugal, managed by abolishthefed.

The first half was very shaky for the Dutch as they struggled to control the skilled dribbling of the Portuguese side.

The Portuguese took an early lead when the Dutch conceded a foul about 25 yards in front of goal. It was low-hanging fruit for Cristiano Ronaldo, who calmly stepped up and lashed a free kick over the wall and into the back of the net.

Portugal continued to have the better of the attack for the first 45, with Joao Moutinho rattling the post just before halftime.

But the second half belonged to Arjen Robben as the speedy winger created problems in the offensive end. His efforts paid off in the 69th minute with a trademark Robben goal.

Robben dove in from the wing to make a long run toward goal. He avoided two defenders at the top of the box before cutting back to hit a driven shot to the near post.

A very hard fought struggle between 2 managers that have played opposite each other numerous times. Belgium took the early lead with a 2-1 rush that saw Hazard feed Benteke for the beautiful goal after a touch. Italy came roaring back as El Shaarawy made defenders chase him only to find an open Immobile sitting in front of the net. After that, it was all Sirgu, as held off the Belgians with 3 athletic saves that all would have been goals vs a lesser keeper. Finally, Giovinco was given some space and he pounced, speeding past the defense only to power a shot thru Cortois, perhaps the best keeper in the world. That goal will be haunting him until they play the 2nd leg of this series.

France picks up first points with 1-0 victory over the Dutch
It was an electric first half from Les Bleus as they attacked early and often, with Benzema nicking an early goal. It was thought to be the first of many, but the French hit the posts 3x and wasn't clinical enough to finish some great chances before HT. It was enough to give Robben and the dutch confidence in a much more even second half. But in the end, the early goal held, as Lloris pulled off a couple big saves to preserve the clean sheet. It was an important 3 points after losing to the Germans late in the first qualifier.
