Greece earn valuable point against group favorites Romania with goalless draw. The home side never looked a threat to score, but the defense stood firm (with some help from the post) to keep Maxim & co. off the scoreboard.

Romania bounce back from a scoreless draw against Greece with a 4-0 win over Ireland. As nothing went in against the Greeks, everything seemed to against the Irish despite both games being a similar attack frome the Romanians. The win puts Romania in prime position to win the group or, at the least, advance.

Cesc Fabregas converted an early penalty to lead Spain to a 1-0 win over Poland in European Group A World Cup qualifying.

The game quickly became a defensive battle. Poland clamped down the midfield, while Spain prevented Poland from getting a shot on target. The closest the Pole came was Robert Lewandowski's shot which glanced off the outside of the post in the first half.

Spain has seven points through three group matches.

Defender Gerard Pique sat out because of card accumulation. ASinghal31

Greece open 5-point gap between themselves and 3rd place with 1-0 win against France. It was more of the same from the Greeks, who scored an early goal through Konstantinos Mitroglou, then defended to the hilt for the clean sheet. The result means Romania have clinched advancement to the World Cup, while Greece are in a comfortable position to do the same in the next qualification window.

La Furia Roja clinched a spot in the World Cup with a 2-1 win over Belgium at the Bernabeu. Sergio Busquets scored and assisted the game-winner to secure Spain's future with two qualifying matches still to play.

But the Belgian's struck first -- the first goal Spain has conceded in the tournament. Luis Cavanda found Christian Benteke at the top of the box. Gerard Pique missed a tackle and Benteke buried his shot for a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.

Busquets equalized for Spain just before halftime. A pass from Juanfran foudn Busquets with acres of space in front of the Belgian defense. Busquets drove his shot side net from the D to beat Belgian keeper Thibaut Courtois.

Spain claimed the lead for good on a tidy through ball from Busquets to Diego Costa near the top of the Belgian box. A nifty ball fake earned Costa enough space to curl his shot far post for the 2-1 win.

Despite the final margin, the Belgians controlled much of the game and created good chances.

Pair of Goals Sees Portugal Defeat the Dutch
With the Netherlands and Portugal tied for second place with 3 points each, their match this window looked to have a huge effect on the group as a whole. The two teams did not meet during the last internatonal break, yet both were fully aware of the other's capabilities entering this match. The first half saw neither team score, and it wasn't until the 57th minute when the deadlock was snapped as a Joao Moutinho header from a corner kick got a lucky deflection off of a Dutch defender to find its way into the back of the net. The goal certainly had to be a blow to a Dutch team that looked even with the Portuguese, but that letdown led to a second Portugal goal- by none other than Cristiano Ronaldo. The match ended 2-0 with Rui Patricio earning a clean sheet and MOTM honors. "Great team effort, both on offense and defense," said Coach Bronc, who was pleased to see his team's form from recent friendlies carry over to this match. "With how tough this group is, we couldn't afford to be in the bottom half entering the return legs." Diogo Figueiras, who played under Coach Bronc at Genoa, tallied an assist in his first qualifier start as he filled in for Cedric at RB. On the flip side, Wesley Sneijder, who will play under Coach Bronc next season at Galatasaray, played well but couldn't quite get the finishing touch his team needed. "Wesley was phenomenal despite his team's result, and I'm looking forward to having him on my squad next season."

Portugal Get Series Sweep Over The Italians
During the last international break, Portugal defeated Italy in a close 1-0 game. Both teams went on to lose their other match, yet took steps in the right direction with wins in their first match of this current window. However, with Portugal still 3 points ahead of Italy, an Italian loss here would be devastating to the nation that finished 4th in the previous World Cup. Nani opened the scoring for Portugal in the 10th minute, but Italian youngster Macro Verratti scored the equalizer shortly thereafter. Ronaldo made it 2-1 for the Portuguese in the 28th minute, and it looked like the fans were set for some offensive fireworks for the remainder of the match. However, that 2-1 scoreline held until the half, and for a while in the 2nd half. At the 68' mark, Ronaldo secured his brace from a volley, and the 3-1 lead was too much for the Italians to overcome. "That final goal sure gave me a sigh of relief," said Coach Bronc. "Our defense played better as the game went on, but that Italian team is immensely talented and forced us to make some changes throughout the game. It's hard to believe that this is a nation that could fail to qualify for the World Cup." However, that possibility is slowly becoming a reality for Italy, as they will need to win their final two matches and a lot of help from others to finish in 2nd place. Meanwhile, Portugal now just needs 1 point from their final 2 games to secure qualification.
