A game-changing moment late in this one as a deflected shot was pounced on by Sabitzer inches from the touchline, followed by a desperation cross that found the substitute Hosier in the dying embers to give Austria an upset win over the stacked Netherlands.

Greece assert themselves as group favorites with 3-0 win in Dublin. The two teams played a nervy first half, with only 3 shots combined between the sides. But the second half opened up, and it was K. Mitroglou who took control of the match, setting up the first goal and scoring the next two. The Greek defense did not allow any of the Irish players to break free, seeing out the final 10 minutes with solid defending to earn 3 points.

Good result for the Romanians to kick off their qualifying campaign with a 4 -1 win over France. They will look to put themselves in prime position when they take on the "group favorites" in Greece on Monday.

Switzerland took on the defending world champs in the first match of qualifiers hoping for at least a point to start their campaign. It was the Swiss who came out to a quick start, with Innocent Emeghara scoring a bizarre goal in the 14' to give the underdogs a 1-0 lead. 5 minutes later, Xherdan Shaqiri found some dribbling space at the top of the box and finished with a near-post goal to the top of the net, stunning the Czech home crowd. The Czechs poured in an onslaught of shots but were repeatedly sent away until Matej Vydra finally found the back of the net in the 53'. Switzerland went into defensive mode after that to preserve their 3 points, and despite some scares, were able to keep the score as is and came away with a big win to start off their qualifying campaign.

Such a thing as "scoring too early"?? Denmark experienced it in this game and dominated the first half. Two really quick goals made it look like they were going to cruise to an opening 3 points in the group which ended in bitter disappointment and sharing the spoils. Muller, in class fashion, finished two chances very well in the opening minutes of the second half to tie up the game . Neuer then recovered from the early goals to make two crucial saves and some really sloppy finishing on Denmarks part which would have sealed the win.....Ericksen hit the inside of the crossbar/post and the ball rolled the length of the goal mouth but stayed out.
This result could be the one to keep Denmark out of the Cup after losing to the Czechs. Good luck Andanas

In their second match of qualifiers, it was Switzerland who once again came out to a quick start, with Breel Embolo scoring a brace in the first 18 minutes of the match. After that, it was Xherdan Shaqiri who tacked on a brace as well with a goal in the 45' and the 56'. Valentin Stocker was credited with the assist on each of the final 3 goals, giving him 4 in qualifier play thus far, the most in the Europe region. Shaqiri now leads all of Europe in goals with 3.

Diego Costa headed home his own rebound to get Spain's World Cup qualifying campaign off on the good foot with a 1-0 win against Belgium, FIFA's top-ranked team.

Spain controlled possession in the first half, but sloppy passing spoiled chances. The speedy Belgians pestered the Spanish defense throughout the half and forced keeper David De Gea to make some fine saves.

The game opened up in the 50th minute thanks to some tricky footwork from Jordi Alba. The fullback made a run down the touchline and used two fakes to free up some space. His cross found Diego Costa open in the box, but his first header slammed off the bar, hit the goal line and spun out. Costa parked under the bounce and headed home for a 1-0 lead.

The Red Devils cranked up the pressure and turned some good chances off of turnovers. Again, De Gea was up to the challenge and the Spanish midfield kept enough possession to limit the Belgian chances and earn a big three points.

A second straight late winner by Hosier for Austria as the home side escapes Ronaldo terror in admittedly fluky fashion. A weak angle shot was misplayed by the Portugal 'keeper as it glanced off his elbow and into the back of the net to give Austria its second straight upset victory. gg Broncos218

Portugal Grab Important Win Against The Italians
Both Portugal and Italy entered the match having lost their other match from the current qualification window. With a tough group, both teams needed points. However, it was Portugal who eventually struck first. In the 45th minute after Italy botched a corner attempt, Portugal was able to gain possesion and move down the pitch. Shortly thereafter, Ronaldo got some space and nailed in a perfect shot to make it 1-0 just before the end of the half. Italy had some quality attempts thereafter, but the Portuguese defense stayed strong and finished the match with a clean sheet en route to the 1-0 victory. "Important 3 points for us, this group won't be easy," said Coach Bronc. "Our defense played fantastic tonight, that's the type of stuff that wins championships." Portugal is now tied with the Netherlands for second place with 3 points, while Austria sits atop the group at 6 points and Italy rounds out the bottom at 0. Bronc added, "This Italian team isn't done. They're talented and will certainly be looking for redemption in the next window."

England struck the woodwork twice and David De Gea stonedwalled a first half breakaway to preserve a 0-0 draw with England on the second day of World Cup qualifying.

England looked dangerous the entire match, and sprung their first chance 26 minutes in. The English pounced on a bad Spanish pass and immediately sent Jamie Vardy over the top. But Vardy's Premier League magic was ineffective against De Gea, who closed down the striker and deflected the ball over the end line.

Raheem Sterling struck the outside of the post about 10 minutes later. And Ross Barkley hit the inside of the post in the 81st minute.

Spain possessed, poked and prodded the whole match but could only manage two shots against an organized English defense.

The draw sends both England and Spain to the top of Europe Group A on four points.
