Breaking News Florida State has made a coaching staff move, they have given the reins to the team to Knight after Fisher has loaded the cupboard for him. After a year to get everything right and going 10-3, the Noles were a darkhorse to contend for a National Title, but that didn't happen after going 9-3. Another time for change came and Knight is the man to lead the Noles.
2012 Season Preview Head coach: KnightNolesFirst Year: 0-0Returning LettermenOff. 32, Def. 33, ST 6Lettermen Lost: 19 The Seminoles will essentially be looking for a do-over in their return to glory, which took a sudden detour in the wrong direction a year ago, due to injuries to QB EJ Manuel and a very young, inexperienced OL. That led to a disappointing 9-4 season, failing to even capture the ACC Atlantic Division. With as many as 18 starters back from last year’s underachieving squad, the ‘Noles are hell-bent on putting it all together, and possibly vying for national championship contention in 2012. OFFENSE Returning Leaders Passing: EJ Manuel 203-311, 2,666 yds, 18 TDs, 8 INTs Rushing: Devonta Freeman 120 carries, 579 yds, 8 TDs Receiving: Rashad Greene 38 catches, 596 yds, 7 TDs Coach Knight will adopt the Fisher PB but going back to the roots of his LSU days. Senior EJ Manuel is about to begin his fifth season in Tallahassee—and second as the starter. The receiving corps has lots of potential. The line is mercifully a year older. His physical ability has never been a concern, a big-armed athlete packaged in a 6-5, 238-pound frame. Sophomore Clint Trickett appears as if he’ll be Manuel’s caddy for a second straight year, building a bulge on 6-5, 232-pound redshirt freshman Jacob Coker. The biggest key here is for EJ to stay healthy and that goes into the gameplanning for him. A horrible regression in the ground game by a talented backfield happened in 2011, which might be accredited to the young OL. Since 15 practices in the spring weren’t enough to decongest the logjam at running back, Florida State plans to stage a four-man competition for playing time in the fall. A lack of support and an early-season injury to Chris Thompson limited the group’s potential. The 5-8, 187-pound senior was the big-play guy of 2010. When he went down, then-freshman Devonta Freeman took over and played surprisingly well for such a young player. Sophomore James Wilder Jr. would seem to be, at worst, a logical choice to be the team’s short-yardage back. At 6-2 and 220 pounds, the five-star recruit from 2011 is the biggest and most physical of the Florida State options. Finally, the program’s most recent five-star gem, Mario Pender is already on campus, bucking for his piece of the pie. The 6-0, 190-pounder might be the squad’s best combination of speed and toughness. 6-0, 229-pound senior Lonnie Pryor, Florida State boasts one of the game’s best all-around fullbacks. Nine ‘Noles caught at least 10 passes a season ago. Just one, Bert Reed, has exhausted his eligibility. 6-0, 175-pound Rashad Greene was playing like Florida State’s version of Clemson’s Sammy Watkins. Greene is planning to unleash his jets and explosive first step on defensive backs for an entire season. Behind Greene at “X” is 5-11, 170-pound Kenny Shaw. At flanker, or “Z” receiver, the ‘Noles are counting on a big season out of senior Rodney Smith. The most unmistakable target among the regulars, he goes 6-6 and 219 pounds, with the enormous wingspan to pluck balls that are away from his body. Smith’s caddy at “Z”, 5-11, 185-pound junior Greg Dent showed flashes of potential from off the bench last season. The Seminoles have yet to decide on their slot receiver, or “Y”, an ongoing competition between 6-1, 187-pound junior Jarred Haggins and 6-2, 206-pound sophomore Christian Green. The wildcard is 6'6'' Kelvin Benjamin who is a RS FR and is being hyped up out of spring practice. And Willie Haulstead who missed 2011 with a concussion. Sophomore Nick O’Leary is going to entice the coaching staff to get the ball in the hands of the tight end a little more often in 2012. As a rookie, the 6-4, 240-pound elite recruit Welcome to the single most important unit in Tallahassee. In fact, the Florida State O-line will be one of the more pivotal groups in the FBS in 2012. Bryan Stork who is making the shift from starting right guard to right tackle this season. Assuming Stork remains at right tackle, his backup will be sophomore Bobby Hart, who went through a baptism by fire in his first year on campus. 6-5, 313-pound sophomore Cameron Erving is in the midst of making a successful shift from defensive tackle to EJ Manuel’s bodyguard. Playing center will be 6-3, 295-pound sophomore Austin Barron, a part-time starter as a rookie. To the left of Barron, at guard, will be 6-5, 325-pound sophomore Josue Matias. Sophomore Tre’ Jackson is the frontrunner at right guard. At 6-4 and 325 pounds, he has terrific size and strength. DEFENSE Returning Leaders Tackles: Christian Jones, 56 Sacks: Brandon Jenkins, 8 Interceptions: Lamarcus Joyner, 4 The defense should absoultely be one of the best and potentially could reach all time heights. From a unit that ranked no lower than No. 8 nationally in run defense, scoring defense, sacks and total D, the ‘Noles return just about every one of last year’s starters. Each level boasts an all-star caliber defender, and the rotation is SEC deep. Leading the charge for one more year will be 6-3, 260-pound DE Brandon Jenkins. Joining Jenkins in the starting lineup at end will be 6-4, 272-pound junior Bjoern Werner. The first defensive end off the bench will be 6-5, 264-pound senior Cornellius Carradine. The 6-2, 301-pounder, Senior Everett Dawkins is the veteran leader of a group of tackles enjoying an embarrassment of riches on the interior. 6-2, 302-pound senior Anthony McCloud has the edge to start at the other tackle position. McCloud better not get too comfortable with 6-3, 301-pound Sophomore Timmy Jernigan playing the same position. For good measure, the ‘Noles will also have a couple of quality vets coming off the bench, 6-2, 290-pound junior Demonte McAllister and 6-1, 301-pound senior Jacobbi McDaniel. As if Florida State isn’t already loaded up front, here comes 6-4, 305-pound DT Eddie Goldman and 6-4, 290-pound DE Mario Edwards. Junior Christian Jones has made the shift from strongside to weakside. At 6-4 and 237 pounds, he’s an all-around impressive physical specimen. Taking over Jones’ old strongside spot will be senior Nick Moody, the former safety who now goes 6-2 and 242 pounds. He’s the headhunter of the group, prowling the field looking for someone to hammer. In the middle, the Seminoles plan to employ two players in order to get the job done. In the lead to start is 6-3, 209-pound junior Telvin Smith. When the staff wants to use a more traditional run stopper in the middle, it’ll turn to 6-1, 245-pound senior Vince Williams. Both corners decided to stay in Tallahassee, Junior Xavier Rhodes is the next-level prototype at the position, a 6-2, 208-pounder who loves to hit, yet also has good instincts in coverage. Teaming up with Rhodes will be 5-8, 185-pound Greg Reid. The new first man off the bench will be 5-10, 165-pound sophomore Nick Waisome. Leading the charge from strong safety will be 5-8, 193-pound junior Lamarcus Joyner. Free safety, 5-11, 189-pound junior, Terrence Brooks is the least known of the regulars, but certainly not a weak link. While sophomore Karlos Williams has all kinds of potential and incredible measurables, he’s just not as polished as Brooks at free safety at this time. SPECIAL TEAMS The Seminoles will sorely miss strong-legged P Shawn Powell, who has graduated, but the special teams remains one of the ACC’s best units. Senior PK Dustin Hopkins, another boomer in Tallahassee, has one more year of eligibility. Replacing Powell will be a recent signee, 6-3 235 pounder Cason Beatty, who graduated early to take part in spring drills. The return game will once again be lethal. Big sophomore Karlos Williams and junior Lamarcus Joyner are expected to share kickoff duties. On punts, few in America are better than senior Greg Reid.

Rough RoadFlorida State Suffers Defeat after nightmare to Notre Dame, 31-20 South Bend, IN-- A hot second quarter would propel Notre Dame to a 31-20 victory as Golson led the Fighting Irish to victory and a pretty stingy defense. FSU could never get their offense rolling having to settle for 2 first half FGs and they fell behind 21-6 at halftime. The Noles defense was on the field for a very long time as ND would continuously have long drives which took time off the clock for any chance of a comeback, combine that with some turnovers = Florida State's first loss of the season. =========================================== First Quarter0:30 FG FSU Dustin Hopkins 23 yard FGSecond Quarter 5:00 TD ND Everett Golson 1 yard TD run1:27 TD ND Cierre Wood 0 yard TD run0:36 TD ND Toma 27 yard TD rec 0:00 FG FSU Dustin Hopkins 41 yard FG Third Quarter3:26 TD ND Cierre Wood 2 yard TD run 0:43 TD FSU Lonnie Pryor 2 yard TD runFourth Quarter4:49 TD FSU Nick O'Leary 3 yard TD rec1:10 TD ND Tausch 29 yard FG =========================================== E. No Love Lost#13 Florida State downs the hated Tigers in a thrilling 30-24 game. EJ Manuel hits Rodney Smith for the first score of the ball game. Tallahassee, FL-- Clemson coming into town with a 1-1 record and a fresh coaching staff after being hired after the week one debacle against Auburn. The Tigers would defer until the second half and each team would end their first drive with punts. FSU on their second drive received excellent field position and Manuel would find Smith with a back shoulder throw in which Rodney would make a spectacular catch. Florida State would take a 10 point lead at halftime after each team would score in the last 45 seconds, 20-10. The Seminoles were able to force a punt opening up the third quarter in which they would capitalize with a FG pushing the lead 23-10. Clemson wasn't done Tajh Boyd would end a drive with a pass to Sammy Watkins for a 20 yard score cutting the lead to 6. To finish out the third, FSU's Willie Haulstead would take a 7-10 yard reception and turn it into an 18 yard TD from EJ Manuel, pushing the lead back to 30-17. Clemson would cut the lead back down to six with 5:22 remaining and get on the doorstep of taking the lead but on a 4th down from inside the 15, the Noles defense would step up and pressure Boyd into an errant throw, sealing the game and bragging rights for a year. ================================== First Quarter2:54 TD FSU Rodney Smith WR #84 29 yard TD from EJ Manuel QB #3 (Dustin Hopkins K #18 kick)Second Quarter7:56 FG Clem Chandler Catanzaro K #39 42 yard FG4:54 FG FSU Dustin Hopkins K #18 36 yard FG1:06 FG FSU Dustin Hopkins K #18 49 yard FG0:31 TD Clem Brandon Ford TE #80 61 yard TD from Tajh Boyd QB #10 (Chandler Catanzaro K #39 kick)0:01 TD FSU Nick O'Leary TE #35 5 yard TD from EJ Manuel QB #3 (Dustin Hopkins K #18 kick)Third Quarter5:33 FG FSU Dustin Hopkins K #18 19 yard FG3:41 TD Clem Sammy Watkins WR #2 20 yard TD from Tajh Boyd QB #10 (Chandler Catanzaro K #39 kick)1:37 TD FSU Willie Haulstead WR #82 18 yard TD from EJ Manuel QB #3 (Dustin Hopkins K #18 kick)Fourth Quarter5:22 TD Clem Jaron Brown WR #18 42 yard TD from Tajh Boyd QB #10 (Chandler Catanzaro K #39 kick) ================================== E. Win Streak IntactFlorida State's winning streak is preserved as they narrowly get by Wisconsin. Greg Reid forces Ball's second fumble of the day, leading to a Seminole victory. Madison, WI-- The Badgers found themselves into a ball game that they didn't have any business in being, due to Florida State's inability to seize their opportunities of possessions and redzone offense. With 6:40 left in the ball game, Wisconsin scores to cut the lead to 23-18 and forcing FSU to give back the ball with just under 5 minutes to play. A decent few plays setup the Badgers as O'Brien turned to hit Ball out of the backfield, as he caught it FSU defenders were caught off guard as they froze for second and then pursued Ball. Greg Reid was lurking out by the boundary as Ball tried to cut back inside to elude Reid, Greg laid a monterous hit and out popped the ball. Brooks picked it up and gave Florida State the ball back which ultimately let Florida State escape Camp Randle in dramatic fashion. ================================== First Quarter3:48 FG Wisc Kyle French K #94 32 yard FG3:00 TD FSU Chris Thompson HB #4 2 yard TD (Dustin Hopkins K #18 kick)2:14 TD FSU Nick Waisome CB #6 35 yard TD (Dustin Hopkins K #18 kick)Second Quarter6:02 FG FSU Dustin Hopkins K #18 40 yard FG2:43 FG Wisc Kyle French K #94 30 yard FG0:00 FG Wisc Kyle French K #94 38 yard FGThird Quarter3:57 FG Wisc Kyle French K #94 23 yard FG0:39 FG FSU Dustin Hopkins K #18 17 yard FGFourth Quarter7:56 FG FSU Dustin Hopkins K #18 35 yard FG6:40 TD Wisc Montee Ball HB #28 4 yard TD (Montee Ball HB #28 kick) ================================== D. #3 - #10 56-44 Karlos Williams makes a great play on the ball to save a touchdown from happening Miami, FL-- From the opening possession this game settled into be a high scoring contest and an offensive show as both teams accumulated 1,301 yards combined! Landry Jones, Ou QB, completed 30 of 46 passes for 523 yards with 6 TDs and 2 INTs while EJ Manuel completed 12 of 23 for 327 yards 3 TDs and 2 INTs. The difference in the game, one more turnover for Oklahoma and Florida State's rushing attack. Chris Thompson received 22 carries and rushed for 161 yards while punching it into the endzone twice. While there wasn't much defense being played, many guys had 5 or more tackles one including Karlos Williams who had 8 tackles, 5 solo and 2 interceptions (one being returned for a touchdown). In the end Florida State received the bowl victory but ultimately the season expectations and goal of a National Championship wasn't reached. The season will only fuel and motivate this team heading into the offseason which might turn into a blessing in disguise, but time will only tell us. For the moment, they will celebrate the look of a 13-1 record with a BCS Bowl victory.
2013 Florida State Seminoles Preview Offense The departure of QB EJ Manuel and HB Chris Thompson are now in effect and Coach Knight has to determine who to start at quarterback from Clint Trickett, Jacob Coker or former five star Jameis Winston. The halfback position will be mostly shouldered by Devonta Freeman with James Wilder Jr to spill him while Mario Pender might see a carry here and there. Wide Receiver returns everyone besides 6'6'' Rodney Smith who missed 10 weeks last year, who might as well should have been gone. Regardless this group might be one of the most talented in the nation along with Nick O'Leary at TE. The offensive line will grade out overall: 86, 88, 87, 92, 88. One of the most prolific scoring offenses should be back at this year and there isn't one guy that can be keyed on to ultimately shut down the offensive production. Defense Losing DE Brandon Jenkins and MLB Vince Williams would hamper most teams across the nation but returning Bjoern Werner, Christian Jones and Karlos Williams they are still strong. Timmy Jernigan should be able to control most of the rushing defense himself as his 6'3'' 303 pound body proves capable to, as Werner, Newberry and Mario Edwards Jr rush the passer. If anything gets by the front 3, Christian Jones, Telvin Smith and Terrance Smith will look to clean up. The secondary is led by Xavier Rhodes at cornerback and then leading tackler Karlos Williams at SS with Lamarcus Joyner being an enforcer from the FS position. If the Noles can limit the big yards through the air, even though they force a lot of turnovers the unit could be one of the best in the nation. Newcomer of the Year Should see plenty of action at DT Recruiting Class Update One player that will see snaps is the one mentioned above, besides that everyone in the class provided depth to the growing up classes of the 2009, 2010 and 2011 recruiting classes. Outlook After being shown to the BCS Orange Bowl by the BCS Committee, a snub to say the least as LSU and FSU finished at 12-1 while ND at 11-1. FSU played a week before the National Title in the same stadium where the game would be played, talk about salt in the wounds. Fulfilling that void and getting redemption is the main focus for this team while being in the National Championship is the goal. The Noles will host Notre Dame and Miami while they will travel to North Carolina and Mississippi State. User OpponentsKey Games
They'll Take It!Florida State starts off the 2013 season with a close win over Notre Dame Telvin Smith stopped and started the comeback rally with this interception in the redzone. Tallahassee, FL-- In a rain soak late August, early September afternoon it was expected. A game where Notre Dame had complete control except for thier quarterback's inability to throw a good pass a few times. A stalemate first quarter then turned into a 14-3 lead in the second quarter for the Irish as they were able to convert two turnovers by the Noles into touchdowns. A third quarter drive was the difference in this game, in which Notre Dame marched right down the field until Golson tried to force a throw to the flats which Telvin Smith intercepted the ball a few inches from the ground. The play didn't turn into points and the FSU drive didn't result in points but it kept ND from making it a three score game. After a punt, Golson tried to throw another ball to the flats this time Karlos Williams did convert it into six, cutting the lead to 4. Florida State was able to get the ball inside the 20 again and Devonta Freeman put them up by three with 6:12 remaining in the ball game. After a few more ND interceptions, Christain Jones would settle the game with a sack on fourth down giving the ball back to the Seminoles in which they ran out the clock. ================================== Second Quarter4:23 TD ND TJ Jones WR #7 5 yard TD from Everett Golson QB #5 (Nick Tausch K #40 kick)2:34 TD ND DaVaris Daniels WR #16 13 yard TD from Everett Golson QB #5 (Nick Tausch K #40 kick)0:13 FG FSU Cason Beatty P #38 19 yard FGThird Quarter1:58 TD FSU Karlos Williams SS #9 36 yard TD (Cason Beatty P #38 kick)Fourth Quarter6:12 TD FSU Devonta Freeman HB #8 11 yard TD (Cason Beatty P #38 kick) ================================== J. Seminoles Earn AnotherFlorida State walks off with a 28-16 victory over North Carolina Jameis Winston perfect timed pitch results in six Chapel Hill, NC-- North Carolina had the first time starter, Jameis Winston, confused as can be as he threw four interceptions. The Tar Heels could never cash in fully with all the turnovers, scoring one touchdown during the day and netting three field goals. Giovani Bernard left the game with an apparent head injury and that somewhat hamered the UNC offense. The momentum changed when UNC would score with 0:05 left in the second quarter and Florida State would get a shot with Winston throwing it up to Christian Green, catching it making the defender miss and make the halftime deficit 16-14 Tar Heels. It was all FSU in the second half scoring 14 points and keeping the clamps on the UNC offense. ================================== First Quarter6:42 TD FSU Jameis Winston QB #13 65 yard TD (Cason Beatty P #38 kick)0:00 FG UNC Thomas Moore K #14 32 yard FGSecond Quarter5:58 FG UNC Thomas Moore K #14 37 yard FG2:41 FG UNC Thomas Moore K #14 45 yard FG0:05 TD UNC Aaron Baker TE #85 28 yard TD from Bryn Renner QB #2 (Thomas Moore K #14 kick)0:00 TD FSU Christian Green WR #89 74 yard TD from Jameis Winston QB #13 (Cason Beatty P #38 kick)Third Quarter4:05 TD FSU Nick O'Leary TE #35 2 yard TD from Jameis Winston QB #13 (Cason Beatty P #38 kick)2:26 TD FSU Devonta Freeman HB #8 46 yard TD (Cason Beatty P #38 kick) ================================== B.
