    Florida Gators 2013 Preview

The Florida Gators come into this year with a lot to prove and a new coach. Florida alum, Alex Richards is taking over the Gators after their poor showing against Louisville in the Sugar Bowl. They are looking to get back on track, Florida hasn't won a National Championship since 2008 and will have a tough road ahead of them. The SEC is by far the best conference yet again, even though the Gators are ranked 10th to start the year, there are still 4 teams in the SEC ahead of them in the pre-season rankings.

The Gators lost a couple big key contributers on their team last year. The best defensive player for the Gators last year, Sharrif Floyd was drafted and will be hard to replace. That will be up to 2 seniors, Dominique Easley and Damien Jacobs. They also lost 4 other starters on defense including; Safety Matt Elam, Linebacker Jon Bostic, Linebacker Jelani Jenkins and Saftey Josh Evans. The defense has been the strength of the Gators the past few years and new guys will have to step up for that to continue.

On offense the Gators lost 2 of their top weapons, Mike Gillislee and Jordan Reed. Reed was the top receiving target and Gillislee the top rusher for the Gators. Sophomore running back Matt Jones will be the new starter and he has some big shoes to fill but most feel like he is/will be better the Gillislee very shortly. Replacing Jordan Reed is not yet known with 3 guys in the mix, Colin Thompson, Kent Taylor, and Clay Burton with Burton being the front runner for his experience. The QB this year will be yet again Jeff Driskel who still has a lot to prove. This could be his last chance to prove himself because the Gators are reportedly trying to recruit QB's.

Florida will have a lot to prove this year with many thinking they are overrated at this point. Coach Richards has a lot of work ahead of him but things are looking up at this point for the Gators.

Florida will open up at home against Toledo this week.

Florida Starts off Year Rough, but With a Win

Coming into the season opener against Toledo, the Gators expected to have some flaws and things that needed to be worked on but they didn't expect it to be this bad. They were heavy favorites coming in but it took 4 overtimes for Florida to pull out the win 26-20, overcoming a lot of mistakes and obstacles.

The game started off poorly with the Gators letting up a quick TD but responded at the end of the quarter with at Matt Jones 4 yard TD, tying the game 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. The 2nd quarter started off the same as the first with Toledo scoring on a 22 yard screen pass. Florida went cold the whole quarter until the end when Austin Hardin kicked a 35 yard field goal at the end of the quarter making the score 10-7 at the end of the first half.

In the 2nd half Florida's defense really came out to play only allowing 6 points between the 2 quarters and 4 OT periods. But the Gators still found themselves down by 7 with 4 min left in the game. Matt Jones and Jeff Driskel lead the Gators down the field and Jones capped off the drive with his 2nd TD run of the day.

In the 1st overtime Driskel threw an interception and the Gators thought the game was over but the defense kept Toledo from getting any yardage and iced the kicker before the 38 yard field goal which he shanked and the game went into the 2nd overtime. In the 2nd overtime both teams exchanged field goals and went on to the 3rd OT where both teams were held scoreless. In the 4th OT, Florida's front line sacked Toledo's QB 3 times with the 3rd being a fumble ending their drive. The next Florida drive they took straight to the goal-line where Matt Jones rushed for his 3rd TD and ended the game!

    Week 2 in Review

This week started with the Gators jumping up to 9 in the national rankings and getting ready to face Florida in state rival Miami Hurricanes in Miami. The Gators came in favored and ready to put week 1 behind them and they did just that winning 20-7.

Florida's defense was the story of the game shutting out Miami for almost the whole game besides a late TD. They forced 3 INT's and had 2 more sacks this week to add on to their 9 from last week. Jeff Driskel was a bit shaking throwing 2 INT's but was also responsible for Florida's two TD's.

Week 4 Update- Movin' On Up

Coming off their bye week Florida geared up to faced the first SEC and ranked foe, Tennessee at The Swamp. This game was just like the past two this year with the Florida offense being shaky at best and the defense being stellar.
In the 1st quarter both teams were held scoreless. Midway through the 2nd, Florida started off the scoring with a TD run by Matt Jones but Tennessee came back with a TD of their own then a last second FG to take the lead into the half 10-7. Just like the previous two games Florida's Defense came out of the half fired up and playing their best ball. They shut out the Vols in the 2nd half and paved the way for a comeback for the offense. Half way through the 3rd quarter QB Jeff Driskel rolled out to the right and found Quinton Dunbar 30 yards down field for the catch but just as everyone thought he was going to be tackled right there, Dunbar made a sick spin move around the defender and ran it in for a 47 yard TD catch! It was not only the play of the game but the winning play as well. Gators win 14-10.
The defense had a total of 5 sacks and also an INT by Antonio Morrison.

Dunbar puts the spin move on Tennessee's defender for the winning TD in the 3rd quarter.

    Matt Jones- 73 att, 317 yards, 4 TD, 6 rec, 46 yards
Latroy Pittman- 12 rec, 200 yards
Quinton Dunbar- 5 rec, 131 yards, 1 TD
Antonio Morrison- 15 tackles, 3 TFL, 1 INT
Jonathan Bullard- 11 tackles, 4 TFL, 3 sacks, 2 FF
