Florida State Game Summaries
Week 1: #10 USC at #8 FSU
Florida State 49 Southern California 35
In new Head Coach Saban's highly anticipated first game at FSU, the 'Noles offense rolled and the defense... well they still have yet to come to life. Saban was quoted saying, "I didn't know what to expect coming in to today's game, there were a lot of question marks and I think some of those were answered while the others remain to be seen." FSU WINS? 'NOLES ESCAPE BLACKSBURG WITH LAST SECOND HAIL MARY!
The top-ranked Florida State Seminoles rolled into Lane Stadium with tons of momentum from their easy 52-21 win over Wake Forest last week. Today, this was not the case. Virginia Tech came to play and they came to win.
-FSU deferred to the 2nd half so VT got the ball first and proceeded to drive down the field and score a touchdown. (7-0 VT)
-The 'Noles would answer with a 48 yard Daniel Hopkins FG. (7-3 VT)
- Va. Tech would once again march down the field and score on a 17 yard TD pass from QB T. Gregory to TE L. Thomas. (14-3)
-FSU would get the ball back and begin to drive back down the field until QB EJ Manuel threw his first INT of the season.
-However, the FSU defense would finally grow a pair and force VT to punt.
-The teams would then trade punts until FSU got the ball back with :35 seconds left in the first half...
FSU RB Chris Thompson would start the drive with a 2 yard run off the right side. Then with :21 seconds left in the half, QB EJ Manuel would find his TE Beau Reliford on a flag route for a 79 yard TD. (14-10 VT)
HALFTIME: VIRGINIA TECH 14 FSU 10
-FSU would receive the kickoff and melt 3 minutes off the clock before RB Carlton Jones cashed in from 1 yard out. (17-14 FSU)
-On the ensuing drive, VT would be forced to punt.
-FSU would get the ball back deep in their own territory and after two negative running plays, EJ Manuel would connect with WR Jarmon Forston for a 60 yard gain. FSU would eventually make a FG. (20-14 FSU)
-VT would score quickly on 3 straight 20+ yard plays. (21-20 VT)
-FSU got the ball back and drove back down to the VT 13 yardline when RB Carlton Jones broke loose on a 13 yard TD run. The two point conversion was no good. (26-21 FSU)
- Va. Tech got the ball back and slowly began to move the ball. The FSU defense just had no answer for Tech's wishbone and fleXbox One sets today. Converting on two 4th down's, VT would finally cash in with :14 seconds left. Making the two point conversion. (29-26 VT)
-This is when the unthinkable happened. FSU's Chris Thompson would run the kick back to the 23 yard line with only :08 seconds left. So now it's Hail Mary time...
