    Free Agent / Tag System

After much debate and a ton of hard work done by some, especially HotRod, we have come to the conclusion that for the simplicity and ease of administration we are going to roll with a Age based FA system with tagging system mixed in with it.

    Here's how the system works...

All players on all teams are considered FA's at the ages of 26-30-33-36.

Each team will have a total of 5 tags that they can use.

    Tags are -

    1. Permanent
    2. Can only be recovered when player is eligible for FA again based on age or tagged player is traded to another team or player retires.
    3. If tagged player is traded to another team... that team must have a tag availabe to use on incoming player. Player will remained tagged until his FA age period is realized again.

    Free Agent Draft

There will be two FA drafts... one before the rookie draft and one after. Both will be reverse order drafts based on an average of team overall and overall standings from last season.

If a player of yours gets drafted, you are allowed to pull back one of your other Free Agent that are in the draft.

Well, that's pretty much it... just remember your tags are PERMANENT and you only get FIVE. Use them wisely.

Ok, since I have never been in a Madden League.

I ran this system for the Browns. For age I used birthday and March 1, 2010 (offseason post year one). Here is my list of FA.

    Column 1
    Number Name Position
    81 Patten, David WR
    88 Furrey, Mike WR
    18 Stallworth, Donte WR
    87 Walker, Aaron TE
    10 Quinn, Brady QB
    66 Fraley, Hank OL
    78 St. Clair, John OL
    68 Weary, Fred OL
    74 Foster, George OL
    65 Steinbach, Eric OL
    75 Murray, Pat OL
    73 Thomas, Joe OL
    50 Barton, Eric LB
    96 Bowens, David LB
    44 Costanzo, Blake LB
    41 Ali, Charles FB
    98 Smith, Robaire DL
    99 Williams, Corey DL
    93 Leonard, Louis DL
    60 Purcell, Melila DL
    29 Ivy, Corey DB
    23 Poteat, Hank DB
    21 Pool, Brodney DB

So, there are at least three guys (Quinn, Thomas, Steinbach) that I would consider tagging. If I DON'T tag them, they go into a draft. So, if someone signed Thomas, I could pull back Quinn, etc? Just seeing if I comprehend.

Also, you don't mean 5 tags per year, you mean TOTAL?

I guess my only question is the age taken at the begining or end of the season. So are my guys who are 25 now going to be free agents or my guys who are 26 now.

Oh and shaun I'm positive it's five total, forever.

If you simulate a season, everyone that is 25 now is 26 years old during the free agent signing period. I'm guessing the players who are 25, 29, 32, and 35 now will be the ones that go into the draft after the first season.

just trying to understand it ...

we are allowed to save 5 guys forever on our team, and no matter how old they are they will be ours unless we trade them. If we trade them and have 1 open tag we can tag another player.

Players at the ages of 25, 29, 32, and 35, will be free agents at the end of the season. Those players can be grabbed by anyone in the order of the FA draft before and after the rookie draft.

Is that correct or am I way off?

Works fine for me, thanks for all the work. Look forward to starting the league.

So Madden doesn't take birthdays into consideration, I guess is what I should have asked.

You don't have to use all 5 though. Maybe year one you dont have any free agents you need to keep. Keep those tags for next year. If you use all your tags year one than you will have to trade those guys or wait three years to change your tags.

i took it as if you tag someone they are permently yours until the next age they become free agents. Then you can take the tag off or retag them.

    correct?

oh i thought the tag meant that guy was mine forever unless i trade him.

for example, say I tag Patrick Willis, i thought no matter if he was 26 or 33 he was mine and could not be a free agent?

i see now. i was confused, but i understand now.

Say I tag Frank Gore the year he is 25 (he will be a FA at the end of the season). After that off-season I can take the tag off because he will not be a FA until the next age of Free Agents. At the next age, if I still want him I just tag him again.

You can not remove a tag unless you trade him or until he reaches free agency again.

The way I interpret this is that Gore would not a FA, and one of your five tags would be used until you either trade Gore or you untag him next time he is FA age.

gotcha. so basically the five players you want the most on your team would be smart to tag them.

and once tagged, they cannot lose the tag unless they are traded.

however, when they come up to the next age, you can choose to not tag them thus giving you one extra tag.

So the current FA list will stay the same until the end of the season before the rookie draft? So we can't add guys like Marvin Harrison, etc. until then?

Also, does anyone know how the rookie draft is going to work without scouting?

This sounds great guys and should be relatively simple to keep track of.

One scenario I wanted to point out or question. What happens if one of your tagged guys gets the unlikely career ending injury?

I assume it drops the tag and you're free to use it again. Want to make sure that's correct though.

Week 17 of Season 1 you must declare if you will use a tag on a upcoming Free Agent.
