I'm currently in the market for a game capture device. Obviously there are not a lot of choices but there are two great ones.

I've narrowed the search down to either a Elgato or Hauppauge but I'm not exactly sure which one to go with. With the way I have everything setup at home, I'm going to have to run the capture through my laptop (feeding it to my desktop would be ideal, but is not possible).

As both the Elgato and Hauppauge are the same price, there is no leaning point there. I'm hoping to get some input on other owners / users to help me make a decision.

Another question I have, is from the looks of both websites, you cant do HDMI in from a PS3. Is that the case? Also, how much visual game quality do you lose from the capture itself if any?

Also, does either come with any type of video editing software?

Thank you in advance to any and all input.

NT I use the Hauppauge for my game capture..I believe ryty32 does too.

The Elgato wasn't out when I got my Hauppauge. I'll send you a couple of vids of what I have

Do you have it setup with HDMI in from the PS3 and out to the TV?

Also, if I wanted to stream games like ryty32 is planning on doing, is either a requirement for that as well?

No HDMI outta the Hauppauge, the RYRGB comes into the Happauge and then to the tv, as far as streaming I either should work just fine

The Hauppauge I linked has HDMI inputs and outputs, so I'm assuming its a newer version?

everything i've seen and read points to the el gato. Its higher resolution. It lets you play at 1080p instead of 720p and lets you use your HDMI cable (instead of needing to use the component cables). It's much smaller. And the software it comes with is superior.

This is the best device IMO....highest quality out of them all and also HD Screen Capture which I LOVE!

The only thing I have disliked with my el gato is I can't seem to find a way to merge multiple videos within the s/w , no clue if that is the same for all game capture. If I had that feature withou having to use a secondary video edit source I would be in love. Aside of that I am happy with my choice

That was an option I was mulling over, but like I said, using my desktop to capture video really isnt an option for me so using a card based device isnt something I can do.

Oh wow, I didnt even realize the one I linked was different from the one in their webstore, thanks for that.

While I do have an XBOX, all my leagues I'm currently in are for PS3.

Truthfully, the biggest problem I have atm is the fact that you cant do HDMI in from a PS3. Is that something that causes quality on the TV to suffer?

I like the hauppage. Bought it used off of The Artist Formerly Known as HK's Swag Apple ( Emmdotfrisk for any of you newbies). Runs like a top and purrs like a kitten.
