Game Summaries: Week 1, Season 3

wow after a crappy off season the new season started off just as bad for the illini. Before i know it we are down 27-0 after 2:30 gone in the 2nd quarter. Starting qb was benched after a real poor performance to start the game. New qb Scheelhasse comes in and does what he is asked to control the offense and move the ball. He went 5-7 114 yards and a td. also ran 13 times for 62 yds. Atarting rb Greem ram the ball 33 times for 148 yds and 4tds. To help lead a miracle comback. Illinois scored 42 unanswered points on great game management and running. The defense humilated played with so much intensity that they caused 3 fumbles during that 42 point run. Arizona st scored one late td and the game ended 42-40 illinois. Lets just say there is a new qb starting for the illini already.

Eastern Michigan @ #5 Penn State

The #5 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions are determined to make some noise this season. They started out with a bang against Eastern Michigan in Happy Valley. The Lions ran all over the Eagles on their way to a 45-3 victory. In total, the Nittany Lions accumulated 401 yards...on the ground!!! HB Curtis Dukes lead the way for Penn State. He started in the second quarter and had 224 yards on 28 attempts and 4 TDs on the day. HB Stephfon Green, who started the game at HB, but was sidelined to give Dukes the ball, came back in the second half and had 147 yards rushign on 22 carries and 2 TDs. 3rd string HB Brandon Beachum and QB Kevin Newsome also contributed yards on the ground, with 29 between their 6 rushes. The defense played lights out football and held Eastern Michigan to 3 points and 167 yards of total offense, only 28 rushing. Eastern Michigan got into the Penn State redzone once, but did not come away with anything as DE Eric Lattimore had 2 sacks to push the Eagles out of kicking range. LB Nathan Stupar had a phenominal day for Linebacker U, with 9 total tackles. Penn State looks forward to next weeks game as they welcome the #2 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide to Happy Valley, as the Tide look to challenge Penn States home field record, which has extended to 14-0.

    Stats:
    -HB C. Dukes: 28 attempts 224 yds 4 TDs
    -HB S. Green: 22 attempts 147 yds 2 TDs

Wisconsin wins their opening game against UNLV by a final of 45-14. We made a lot of big plays, but gave up a few of them as well. Some things may need to be tweaked over the next couple of games, including QB position. Overall, the team did what they had to do and handled a team they were supposed to beat. Nice start to the season, but there is definitely room for improvement.

Key Stat: 0-4. UNLV could have made this game interesting with a conversion or two.

Player of the game: Curt Phillips. 21-35 for 286 yards and 4 TDs through the air. He also had some picks. Can't have that in conference this year.

Next Week: @ Oregon State. An interesting test on the road against a team from the Pac 10.

UCLA STARTS OFF SEASON WITH A 51 - 27 VICTORY OF HOUSTON

What would have to be described as a "make or break" season for coach Ryty and Junior QB Kevin Prince, the Bruins got off to a good start with an easy 51 - 27 victory over Houston.

The UCLA offense appeared to be in mid-season form as Kevin Prince went 13 for 19 for 260 yards and 1 TD. Running Backs Milton Knox and Aundre Dean combined for 158 yards on 28 carries along with 5 touchdown runs. Most of the yards were gained out of the newly implemented Wild Bruin (Wildcat) formation. A. Hester also returned a kickoff 90 yards for a Touchdown on the only kickoff to his side of the field.

    Pittman Stuffed, Gophers Lose

    #18 Cincinnati @ Minnesota

    1st Quarter
Adrien Robinson scores on a 6 yard TD catch capping a 12 play 75 yard drive that took the wind out of the Gophers. Missing the XP they took the lead 6-0.

Pittman punches it in from short distance to get his 1st rushing touchdown of the year. The Gophers answered by driving 73 yards on 14 plays. 7-6

    2nd Quarter
After a huge 3rd down conversion by the Bearcats, they are stopped inside the 30 and come up short with no points.

Minnesota would be forced to punt. DJ Woods(CIN) burns the defense for a 35 yard TD taking the lead 12-7.

Minnesota goes on a 3 minute and 4 second drive to nail a FG w/ 5 seconds left on the clock. 12-10

    3rd Quarter
Bryant Allent hauls in a 29 yarder in the back of the endzone putting the Gophers back on top 17-12.

Cincy would then punt but picked the ball off on a WR screen. They shred the defense after having already good field position on about 3 plays. They go for 2, get it and lead 20-17.

    4th Quarter
Game Changer- Minnesota would go for it on 4th down instead of kicking a for sure field goal that would have tied the game. Instead, Pittman gets stopped up the middle and the Bearcats retain possession.

Vidal Hazelton puts the dagger in the hearts of the faithful with 4:27 to go.

    Final Score:
    Cincinnati 27
    Minnesota 17

    Gopher Player Stats:

    Passing
    Marqueis Gray 13-30 129 1TD 1INT

    Rushing
    Jonathan Pittman 22-74 1TD
    Marqueis Gray 12-55
    Duane Bennett 4-18

    Receiving
    John Moore 6-49
    Bryant Allen 3-45 1TD
    Xzavian Brandon 2-21

It wasn't his fault, really. The lack of the run game stopped by the mad blitzing of the Bearcat CPU hurt our whole gameplan. Gray had some nice plays. Most of those incompletions came in the end, when we were throwing non-stop just trying to salvage some points. The wide outs have so much speed, all I have to do is get it there. Unfortunately, with the damn pass rush in there within 2 seconds, it is hard to get things off.

Hello World, My Name is Shinaba and I Like to RUN.....

and so does Oregon as they stampede Kansas State.
    '

    Oregon : 58
    KSU : 7

The Oregon Ducks went into the little big apple looking for a win after some major changes last season. LeMichael James would get the start @ RB, but was injured on the first series. RB Shinaba came in, and from what we saw, it looks like he is now the #1 RB.

Shinaba ran the ball 28 times for 207 Yards and 3 TD's. He helped an Oregon running attack gain 520 rushing Yards total. Kansas state was held to only 7 yards on 15 carries (5 Sacks, 8 TFL's). The Ducks 3-4 Defense was swarming the ball carrier, and it wasn't easy for the receivers either. KSU only passed 11/26 for 122 Yards.

It looks like the Ducks have kept momentum from the end of last season and will need to be hitting on all cylinders next week vs Boise State.

    Oregon's Quack Attack:
    QB D.Thomas 8/8, 130 Yds, 1TD, 7 car, 41 Yds, 277.7 Rating
    RB J.Shinaba 28 car, 207 Yds, 3TD, 3 rec, 38 Yds,
    RB A.Bell 15 car, 95 Yds, 4TD
    QB J.Parks 9 car, 94 Yds
    RB L.James 4 car, 33 Yds
    QB D.Hawkins 3 car, 50 Yds

    Player of the Game
    RB J.Shinaba 28 car, 207 Yds, 3TD, 3 rec, 38 Yds, 27 Yds KR, 38 Yds PR = 310 Total Yards, 3TD's

Iowa looking for a team identity against the Pitt Panthers

The Hawkeyes come into the 2011 season lacking a figurehead on offense. Just over a minute into the game, one was found. Sophomore WR Keenan Davis took the pass from Weinke and did the rest himself as he scooted 33 yards for the TD. Davis did not see the ball much last year until late in the season. He started to make an impact at that point. So much so that he was voted to the Freshman All American team. And this year he is a preseason All American. He is not the fastest guy on the field, but he will get your attention. 6'3", 200lbs, Davis is an athlete. He will get up and get the ball in traffic, and will leave you wondering where he went on his route running. He dropped a couple balls on some monstrous hits, but got right back up and got in the huddle. We will work with the jugs machine in practice this week to fix that. I figure if you go up and are going to take the hit, might as well catch the ball.

Later in the first quarter, it was Big10 football time, as Iowa's Brandon Wegher rumbled in on the ground. Wegher had a good game, carrying the ball 32 times for 138 yards. He also picked up 2 rushing TD's and managed to break out of 6 tackles. Iowa's run game may take a little while to get on track this year. Coming off a record setting year on the ground, the Hawkeyes are looking at an almost new offensive line.

There are two returning starters from last season, but one of those was a true freshman last year. The departing seniors will all be enjoying time in the sunday league, as the average rating of the departed players was a 96. That left a few holes to fill. The spot at center was easy. Coaches kid got that one, James Ferentz. And he has worked hard for it. At the guards, Gettis stays at RG, while Ernest Sears earned his stripes last year as a backup. As a true sophomore, he will see the bulk of snaps at LG. The outside men did a little moving. Fresh off a solid freshman season, Mark Harris made the move to LT. This opened up for SR Markus Zusevics to step in at RT. Here, the experience came into play. Zusevics has been in the system now for 4 years and his understanding of the offense outweighed the meager difference in talent with backup Evan Swain coming off his redshirt year.

The line looks to be dominant again this year, as they have a good stable of backs to tote the rock. Getting a majority of carries will be SO Brandon Wegher and SR Jeff Brinson. Pulling backup duty and also kick return duty will be RS FR Elliot King. He has a bright future in the program. The run game totalled just short of 200 yards. The passing game was also very effective. First time starter, southpaw John Weinke, connected on 12 of 20 passes for 163 yards, 1 TD and 1 Int. The interception was a bad read, and we will see a few of those out of the young QB, but hopefully not too many. Mossbrucker hit a FG as time expired in the half to put Iowa out in front, 17-0.

After the break for water and orange slices, Wegher again found the painted area, putting Iowa up 24-0 and in control. A TD for Pitt as time expired in the 3rd was their only score. The 2 point conversion made it 24-8 going into the 4th quarter. The scoring was done for the day, as Iowa pounded the rock and ran the clock.

Iowa managed two turnovers in the game, with Tyler Sash getting a pick and Jack Swanson recovering a fumble. Sash made the switch from safety to corner in the offseason, and it has already paid dividends. Swanson's recovery came on a punt return as LB Anthony King stripped the ball from the Pitt returner. WR Jonathan Baldwin was trying to get it all, but forgot about the ball on the play. Great special teams play from my squad.

All in all, it was a good opening game for an offense that is without its starting QB, RB, 2 WR's and TE from last season. I can live with that.

    Mike

USC wins a shootout with Utah

USC proved it can light up the scoreboard . . . on both sides. Aaron Corp might have thrown his name into the Heisman conversation with an efficient 300 yards and 3 TD tosses. Marc Tyler was dominant on the ground as well scoring 3 TD's. However the USC defense could not stop the Utes spread attack from lighting them up for big play after big play. There receiver Fitzgerald was a beast with well over 100 yards receiving and a couple TD's.

A win is a win though especially against a ranked opponent.
