Ducks Step up in 2nd Half; Rally to beat KSU

    Oregon : 34
    KSU : 16

RB Shinaba began the season as a Heisman hopeful. He was ranked in the top 3 before his injury last season. His biggest game last season came against KSU, and he looked to repeat that performance this afternoon. Unfortunately Shinaba was injuried in the 1st QTR. This put a jolt into the Ducks offensive plan and they did not get going until the second half. Shinaba will be out 11 weeks with a dislocated elbow. Its safe to say his heisman hopes have been tossed for the 2nd straight year.

RB Parks came in and played well. He ran 28 times for 123 yards and 2 TD's. QB Thomas was injured throughout the day, but managed to go 9/15 for 119 Yards and 2 TD's. Oregon's offense didn't take off until mid way through the 3rd quarter, but they finished the game with 21 un-answered points, although KSU gave them all they could handle.

Its unsure which direction the Ducks will go from here. They had switched to a pro style offense in order to maximize Shinaba's potential this season, but since he is out and Parks is most likely getting the bulk of the carries, the Ducks might be moving back to their older spread attack, and try and maximize QB D. Thomas arm and scrambling abilities.

    #25 Minnesota 31 @ Tennessee 30

The Gophers are ranked in the top 25. They haven’t been this high in the rankings early on since the coach has took over, 4 years ago. They take a step up facing a tougher SEC opponent in the Tennessee Volunteers.

    1st Quarter
Bryce Brown carves the defense for a 51 yard score, 6-0 on a missed XP.
“Is this kid electric?†says Corso as Pittman returns the kick off 93 yards to tie the game.
The Vols look unstoppable yet can’t complete the drive, tacking on a FG, 9-7.
Turnovers back to back occur. Pittman is stripped on a huge 3rd and 4 conversion. At midfield, UT’s QB is picked off by a Gopher DB.
    SCORE: 9-7

    2nd Quarter
UT pins Minnesota at the 2. UT takes over at midfield. 3rd & 2 stop leads to a 1st down for the Vols as Minnesota is called for a facemask penalty. UT goes up 16-7 on a 1 yard Bryce Brown TD run. Minnesota ST comes up big, this time Bryant Allen returns it 75 yards to give the Gophers the ball inside the 10. UT breaks up the line of scrimmage on 3rd down by hitting the QB before he can toss the ball. Gophers nail a FG.
    SCORE: 16-10

    3rd Quarter
The Gophers had only 32 yards of total offense in the 1st half. A large part of that was due to the big returns.
Bryce Brown gets his 3rd rushing TD on the day. Tennessee would get the ball back. However, after driving down the field, the kicker misses to give the Gophers the ball.
Brown tacks on number 4 for the day.
    SCORE: 30-10

    4th Quarter
Can the Gophers do anything to salvage the 3rd quarter beat down?
Pittman scores to give the Gophers some kind of dignity, 17-30.
After brilliant passing and time management, Minnesota gets to the 5 yard line and Pittman pounds it in, 24-30 with 2:21 remaining.
Minnesota stops the Vols, forcing them to punt. The question before the quarter started has been answered. Can the Gophers win?

The Gophers take over at the 25.
The Gophers march down inside Vol territory. Adrian Ford, MN’s starting QB is injured. John Nance comes in. He puts together some nice throws to give the Gophers a chance at a miraculous comeback.

    PLAY OF THE GAME:
Nance, on 3rd and 9 finds Rashede Hagemen to put the Gophers at the 2 with under 30 seconds remaining.

Pittman ties the game with 18 seconds left. The Gophers go up 1 with the XP, 31-30. The Gophers hold on to the win!

    Coach’s Thoughts:
I don’t know how we won but we did. I guess in the end that is all that matters. We weren’t able to run the ball early on which led to a lot of punts. Our defense struggled and gave up yards & points. We are lucky to be standing. We are lucky to come out of Neyland stadium alive. We knew the SEC would be tough. Last year, our big early game was against a ranked Cincinnati team who beat us. This year, we escaped two teams and are sitting at 2-0 heading into a meeting with the Washington Huskies. Hopefully, we find our identity and get back to work. Pittman had a fair day but will need an even better outing as he struggles against the top competition.

    Passing
    Adrian Ford 15-24 150 1INT
    John Nance 2-4 32

    Rushing
    Jonathan Pittman 18-76 3TD

    Receiving
    Rashede Hageman 4-72
