Game Summaries: Week 9, Season 3
Post in here.
Minnesota 28 @ Mississippi State 14
Minnesota strikes first after each offense had a crack at the defense. A 24 yard pass to Xzavian Brandon would set up the Gophers with a 1st & 10 inside the Bulldog red zone.
Paul Jones puts the Gophers up by 2TD's by snatching a corner route TD on a 30 yard pass by Marqueis Gray.
Miss State goes for the fake punt on 4th down. They score on an option run, 14-7.
Bryant Allen does what he's done so well, return a kick for a TD, 21-7.
Gopher MLB, Patrick Sveum stops the Bulldog 2 minute drill with an interception.
4th and 1, Duane Bennett pounds it in for a crushing 3 TD lead, 28-7.
Miss State goes on a 67 yard drive quickly marching down the field, play by play, 28-14.
Marqueis Gray 11-20 143 2TD
Jonathan Pittman 27-88
Duane Bennett 6-20 1TD
Brandon Green 3-39 1TD
Xzavian Brandon 3-45
Paul Jones 3-61 1TD
Up Next: #3 Ohio State
Wisconsin goes to East Lansing and takes care of the Spartans, 42-10. Phillips threw for four TDs, but, also 4 picks. The multiple interception games week in and week out against good teams is becoming mildly frustrating. We're going to have to look at running the ball more, and trying to do some different things in the passing game because the Ints are costing us. The defense played fine, forcing four interceptions of their own but gave up some big plays that were kind of strange towards the end of the game. There is plenty of room for improvement. Nick Toon was the one, big bright spot. And what a bright spot he was. Caught ten passes for 100+ yards, three Touchdowns, and, ran another one back on a kick return. The win moves the Badgers to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten. Rivalry game looms next week against Iowa.
Stanford @ #17 UCLA
#17 UCLA RALLIES TO DEFEAT STANFORD, 41 - 38
PASADENA, Ca -- What looked to be an easy game on paper, UCLA had to rally late to avoid complete disaster. Facing the largest upset in the PAC 10 this season, UCLA rallied from down 35 - 17 to win 41 - 38. QB Kevin Prince passed for 332 yards and 3TDs to once again lead the Bruins.
UCLA controlled the game early with two easy touchdown drives lead by the running game and Aundre Dean. The score was 14 - 0 after one. After another defensive stop by UCLA, this game looked to be heading towards a blowout. However, after a Prince interception in the redzone, Stanford would score 28 unanswered points to take a 28 - 17 lead into halftime.
Stanford would strike early in the third on a 61 yards middle screen to WR C. Owusu to take a 35 - 17. It was at this point when Coach Neuheisel decided to get off AIM, stop talking to his wife and kids and started to take the game seriously. Next, Prince would take UCLA on three long scoring drives and the defense would step up in the 4th to escape with the win.
If UCLA is going to have any chance against USC, this type of performance cannot happen.
UP NEXT - BYE WEEK
Championship teams find a way to win those games. Quality comeback dude.
Iowa travels to the Big House, dominates Michigan
After giving up 7 points on an option keeper to Denard Robinson, Iowa went until the final minute without allowing Michigan to reach the redzone. And the only thing the Wolverines could muster once they got there was a turnover on downs. In between all that, Iowa pounded the ball on the ground, and torched Michigan through the air. Four times Iowa caught Michigan on an all out blitz to gain massive yardage after the catch, three of those receptions going for TD's, the fourth was turned into a FG. When Iowa was not passing, they were pounding it between the tackles against a very quick and powerful Michigan defense. Brandon Wegher had a decent day, but was on the sideline for the third quarter with an injury. In steps Jeff Brinson, battering and bruising his way to over 5 yards per carry against the front 7 of Michigan. The game ball goes to the men in the trenches, as their play kept Weinke off his back, the tackles for loss limited, and the turnovers to nil. The backup TE's also did a fantastic job providing an outlet for Weinke when the 8 and 9 man blitzes did come. Michigan doubled Keenan Davis most of the game, and managed to limit his touches, but Davis still managed 4 receptions and another TD. The big plays were made by Arnold, Herman, and Wegher. Each of them had a reception of over 30 yards.
For the defense, there was only one turnover, and two sacks, but Denard Robinson spent more time on his rearend than if he was on the bench. All day the Iowa defensive line got pressure, most of the time from only the front four. Broderick Binns picked up two more sacks, but also harassed Robinson into many more bad throws. The D-line had Robinson looking at them before he looked up for his receivers. Robinson did break a few long runs, but the problem was solved before it became an issue. Tyler Harrell picked up his first interception on the season, chasing down a lame duck before it dropped to the ground.
Iowa has a big rivalry game coming up next week when the Wisconsin Badgers visit Kinnick Stadium for the annual battle for the Heartland Trophy. This game will be huge. Both teams need the win to keep pace in the Big 10. Only one will get it. Who will it be? Tune in next week to find out.....
Connecticut @ Notre Dame
Connecticut 20 Notre Dame 33
A lackluster performance from the Irish was highlighted (or lowlighted) by 2 first half INTs by QB Dayne Crist. After the 2nd pick coach 2Bits had seen enough. He called up Nate Montana from the bench and the junior played error free ball for the rest of the game. The real beast for ND continues to be tailback Cierre Wood. Number 2 carried the ball over 25 times for 100 plus yards and had two scores on the ground. The super sophomore is looking at a twenty plus TD season.
What are the Irish going to do at quarterback. Crist has 8 TDs and 14 INTs on the year. He is a TURNOVER MACHINE. After the game coach 2Bits was quoted as saying that Nate Montana will get the majority of snaps with the 1st team in practice this week.
Next vs. Eastern Michigan (NBC)
Illini becomes bowl eligible. Illinois moves to 6-1 after a 48-21 victory over Indiana. With 3 big games coming up Illinois decided to try and get a passing game going. and wasnt to bad at all.

BEAVERS BEAT HUSKIES BUT LOSE 2 PLAYERS FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON
BEAVERS BEAT HUSKIES BUT LOSE 2 PLAYERS FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON
The Oregon State Beavers played well considering 4 of their top players went down in the first quarter. On the third play of the game SR HB Jacquizz Rodgers suffered a broken elbow and is out for the season, as well as the remainder of his career at Oregon State. Two plays after RSJR RT Colin Kelly broke a vertebrae and is also out for the season. Shortly before the end of the first quarter, RSSR HB Ryan McCants went down with back spasms and is listed day to day. Late in the third quarter Starting Quarterback Cody Vaz was knocked out with bruised ribs.
With all these injuries the Beavers managed to persevere and get a win.
The Beavers defense stepped up big, not being apart of the injury bug. They shut down the huskies to 213 total yards of offense, holding Freshmen All-American Chris Polk to just 51 yards on the ground. The Beavers forced two huge fumbles and interception late in the game.
The Beavers offense found a way to win. They adjusted from their heavy rush game and brought in 3,4,5 string HB Jovan Stevenson, Clayton York, and James Wilson. After all was said and done, 5 HB received handoffs in the game. RSSR Ryan McCants led the way with 63 yards on 16 carries. 2 Quarterbacks threw for TD's in the game.
The Oregon State Beavers (3-4,2-3) are looking to become bowl eligible by needing to win 3 of their last 5 games. Their toughest games will be week 13 and 14 against Cal and Oregon.

CAL upsets #1 USC!!!!!!
more details to come...
GG sdid. Tough win for Cal that got up early in the first half 17-7 after 2 costly turnovers. USC rallied on the end but Cal was able to seal the win 34-21. Now gotta get up here in a few hours.... lol
WOW!!! One for two on my predictions. Not bad. Nice work J. I did not see Sdid losing until next year when a large portion of his offensive line left. Either way, nice win.
Look out tOSU, anything can happen!
Cal @ #1 USC
In order to win this game Cal knew they would have to make USC's QB A.Corp win the game and that's what Cal did in this game. Cal's defense run blitzed early and often to stop the running game of USC. This worked well in the first quarter enabling Cal to get 2 forced ints. From these turnovers Cal was able to pound the ball in with the run game for touchdowns. One of these 1st quarter touchdowns was a gamebreaker run of 33 yards from second string Junior RB C. DeBoskie. Before the end of the first half USC drove down the field to the redzone only to get stopped for 3 downs. Now USC had a fourth down on the Cal's 3 yard line. QB A.Corp threw a pass to the flats where a Cal CB was waiting. Right when USC's RB B. Carswell came down with the ball he was immediatly hit but refused to go down and got hit one more time on the one yard line but was able to carry the Cal LB just far enough to cross the endzone. The half ended 17-7.
DeBoskie ended up with 146 yards in the first half. On the first play of the 3rd quarter DeBoskie got injured and out for 4 weeks. Now Cal was in a dilemma since they are down to just their 3rd and 4th string RB's. There was some uncertainty to whether these young RB's could handle the pressure of sealing this win. Especially since USC began to rally with a more focused passing attack. Cal was able to hold off USC from scoring in the 3rd qtr but USC scored early in the 4th on a 3 yard pass to RB C.Mcneal (Carswell was injured in the 3rd qtr). Cal was stopped on the next drive and forced to punt but was able to force another interception and responded by driving it down the field with their 4th string RB D.Yarnway for the go ahead score from 4 yards out.
USC quickly responds with 2 long passes from M.Barkley and a 2 yard run with RB M.Tyler making the game 27-21 in the 4th with 2:55 to go. Cal was able to drain the clock and score another TD from 2 yards out with Yarnway which ended this thrilling game.
This was a great win for Cal. Cal was able to take the mistakes from the UCLA disaster as a learning tool to better implement execution in the run game. Cal's coach commented at the end of the game that "his players played passion smash mouth football today, they looked like a different team from last week and will be looking for revenge against UCLA next year [insert evil laugh muahaha].''
QB- B.Mansion 11-for-17 243yds 1int
RB- C.DeBoskie 146 yds 2 TDs
D.Yarnway 36 yds 2 TDs
WR- M.Jones 79 yds
DE- E. Owusu 6 tkles 2 sacks 1FF
CB- B.Nnabuife 2tkles 2 int's
Next game - @ Washington State
Nice win man
Carroll: We came out a lil flat and it's been a plague this year. This time it caught up with us and we paid the price. Cal did waht they needed to do to beat us and we commend them for that. We have huge games the rest of the way and if we win out we win the conference. There's a lot left to play for here and we need to finish strong on the recruiting trail and losing games to rivals doesn't help that.
Great game Coach J see you in Berkeley.
Looking forward to the future rivalry battles
