All in all i don't disagree. But I know that Monsanto and other Biotech companies worry that the unsubstantiated fear is soooo far reaching to the general public that people will stop buying what they have for 15--20 years b/c it MIGHT, ONE DAY, SOMETIME, SOMEWHERE, we harmful. 95% of american people don't understand genetics and genetic engineering and are scared of "super-bugs" and "if Bt hurts caterpillars it might hurt me" and the like...which would lead to huge financial losses for farmers and companies (not just monsanto) which could mean tons and tons of job losses. Now, if people can get REAL information on how the technology works and get rid of the greenpeace fed propaganda and let people read the research for themselves without fear of the science, then I don't think it would be an issue. I know i've heard people like me say, "if people suddenly see GMO on their food, they'll think something is wrong with it and that its new and weird, when in fact its been there for 20 years. Irrational fear is what worries some of these people, and that has a big impact on our economy. That said, I'd buy GMOs everyday errday, b/c they're safe, and until a study proves that wrong, i'll take the last 20 years of me eating it and being safe as proof.
To me, it comes down to the fact that we have to keep up with production, while also keeping things affordable. The way we are doing it is working fine right now.
My favorite part..."the animal eats the plants, it's gene's change." someone doesn't know what amylase does in the human body...
Yeah prominent doctors, scientists, and biochemical engineers have no idea what the fuck they are talking about. Neither does the guy that was commissioned to do the research for the EU then when he reported the findings was fired. Guess I'm not sure what you aren't buying here.
too much misinformation out there... crops have been genetically modified for way more than 20 years... only difference instead of breeding a plant for 20 years to make it resistant to drought/bugs/etc, we now have a way to put those properties into its DNA and we can develop better crops that yield higher. they have been doing the same thing for non human consumption crops. everyone is always looking for something to start a riot about... according to this marketing video i watched on 3D printing we will just print our food out at home...
damn, i've eaten corn for years. no wonder i have that corn stalk growing out of my arm...if corn genes can mesh with mine and all...LOL. drinking water can kill you. better not drink it anymore.
whats most funny to me is that a lot of people that hate GMOs because they might, sometime, later in life hurt you...are the same people that smoke, drink alcohol, eat fatty foods, drink sodas or energy drinks, do the occasional drug, etc. you know, things that have documented serious health risks. you will die from anyone of those things before GMOs, guaranteed. you don't want to eat it? no problem. go to whole foods and spend the extra $$ for the "organic" stuff, that still uses pesticides btw. no more fast food, energy drinks, soda, etc for you then either...b/c a lot of the sugar you eat comes from refined GMO corn and GMO sugar beats. put your money where your mouth is and put Monsanto, Bayer, Syngenta, Dow out of business. Go for it. Whole foods is available to everyone, have at it! Meanwhile, i'll enjoy my life with GMOs without any health issues. Thank you.
Youre missing two very important points: 1) There is little to no testing being done 2) There is no labeling and people should at least have the choice. Unfortunately our entire system is corrupt to the core and the way things have worked out so far, neither is going to change.
i honestly have zero problem with either. organics are labeled. whole foods doesn't sell GMOs. so if you don't see the "organic" sticker, then its safe to assume something GMO is in it, at least things like corn, soybeans and things with added sugar...so most things, heh. and again the testing is that i'm healthy and i've been eating it for 20 years. i still don't understand how thats not proof.
1) If you think they don't test these things before they just throw them out there, that is ridiculous. 2) I completely agree- no reason it shouldn't be labeled. I have no problem with giving people a choice.
" However, there is no substantial peer-reviewed scientific evidence to suggest that any GM foods on the market today are harmful to humans." From your source.
http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/c...-really-stupid-stuff-about-gmos/#.UfxagpJqnc1 Favorite quote from a plant geneticist in Scientific American: There is broad scientific consensus that genetically engineered crops currently on the market are safe to eat. After 14 years of cultivation and a cumulative total of 2 billion acres planted, no adverse health or environmental effects have resulted from commercialization of genetically engineered crops. Both the U.S. National Research Council and the Joint Research Centre (the European Union’s scientific and technical research laboratory and an integral part of the European Commission) have concluded that there is a comprehensive body of knowledge that adequately addresses the food safety issue of genetically engineered crops. But don't let irrational fear get in the way of truth and scientific innovation.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/28/s...nge-by-altering-its-dna.html?ref=science&_r=0 I think we should just let the orange crops die and stop eating oranges and not try to scientifically solve the problem using genetics, don't you? Because I'm scared of what could happen.
Also, I'm arguing for the safety of the GMO products on the market today. I'm not arguing against Monsanto ethical treatment of farmers, patent law, labeling issues or any of that. Strictly arguing about safety for consumption. In fact I'm all for the labeling thing. But you can already buy non GMOs at whole foods. So putting money where your mouth is can actually be done already.
