Week One - Gonzaga @ Las Vegas State

Things started off well enough. Senior QB Will Reed hit Junior wideout Jeff Mosby for a 44-yard score, and Gonzaga was up 7-0. But from then on, Reed was shaky at best. After throwing his first pick of the year, he couldn't seem to hit anything he aimed at, and the 'Zags ended up on the bad end of a 24-17 slugfest. After a perfect first drive, Reed ended the day 16-29, and with three interceptions. Coach Griffin, in his post-game press conference, hinted at the possibility of a change at the QB position:

"In the offense we run, accuracy is key. You don't have to hit the big pass on every drive, but you have to hit a lot of small ones. We missed the target too many times, and if it weren't for the drops by the secondary, we would have been embarrassed today. One way or another, we're going to put a QB on the field who can hit the target."

Since junior Jonathan Russell - the 'Zags' second best option - is redshirting this year due to a shoulder injury, the duties would fall to career backup Greg Hooper if coach Griffin decides to make a move. It may be a little early to call for a change, but if Reed and the 'Zags don't play well at Pac-10 in-state rival Washington next week, we could see some big changes.

There's really not much to say; the Zags went to Washington and got run out of the building by the Huskies. Here's what coach had to say about it:

I'm not really sure what to say. We did some good things - we moved the ball on offense, but we just couldn't stop anyone. I mean, we're just not going to beat a good Pac-10 team when we give up 45 points and turn the ball over four times. It just isn't going to happen.

"I expect more. The fans expect more. Either we give a better effort next week, or I start scheduling tryouts."

He looks serious, folks. Things better change quick, or it may be Coach Griffin who's on the hot seat, and he seems to understand the gravity of the situation.

Week Three - Gonzaga (0-2) vs Alameda (2-0)

    [IMG][IMG]

Kent had a big day - 223 yards and two scores.

This one was the slugfest that pretty much everyone expected it to be. Alameda with their power runs game against Gonzaga and their Matador defense. Raz's Bears ran all over and through the Bulldog D. Were it not for the big plays of the 'Zags offense, this one would have been a blowout. Those big plays came from little big man Daniel Kent, who broke a number of runs on his way to a 223 yard and two touchdown performance. Here's the longest run of the day, a 78 yard TD scamper early in the second quarter:

The other big play happened later that quarter, when WR Charlie Stokes took a kickoff 87 yards for another Bulldog touchdown. These plays kept it close, and the Gonzaga defense finally remembered they were football players in the second half, and with the help of lots of big time running from Kent, and a 12-yard connection between quarterback Will Reed and WR Johnnie Caldwell, the Zags were able to take a 38-34 lead with 1:37 left, and the lead would hold. Senior DT Brandon Tatum would smother the Alameda QB before he could get the ball away on a fourth down screen play, and the Bulldogs were able to kneel on the ball and win their home opener.

    Week Three Post Game

    [IMGa=left]http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz337/oldfellasfootball/douchebag.jpg[/IMGa]

In an unexpected move, Gonzaga head coach Archie Griffin apologized to the fans and the opposing players after the game for his rather unsportsmanlike comments on gameplay issues.

"Just because my guys play defense like a bunch of hairdressers, that doesn't mean I can complain about it constantly. At some point, you just gotta realize that it's the same game for everybody, and we all just have to adjust.

I would also like to apologize to all hairdressers, or I suppose I should call them stylists, for my previous remark."

For the first time since the inception of the OFFL, the douchebag card is being given to Archie Griffin, by Archie Griffin, because Archie Griffin deserves it.

Archie Griffin will no longer refer to himself in the third person, lest he risk getting the card a second time in the same week.

Stokes had a case of the drops in this one.

The Zags went into NIU hoping to even their record at 2-2, and perhaps bring their season back from the brink. After two horrible weeks to start the season, HB Daniel Kent is becoming a leader for the Zags, and his on field performances have been nothing short of spectacular in weeks three and four. After a 223 yard, two touchdown performance last week, Kent followed up by rushing for 174 yards on 21 carries in this one. He never saw the end zone, as Gonzaga's two touchdowns on the day came by way of an interception return by the defense, and a 10 yard touchdown pass from Will Reed to TE Michael Britton. Kicker Jeff Bower did the rest of the scoring, going 3-4 on the day, including one from 48 yards out. The defense responded to AG's now famous "hairdresser" remark by turning NIU over three times in the game, and holding them to only 10 points.

Kent may be out, but Horne's 132 yards and a touchdown ain't bad for a replacement.

Colorado State gave the Bulldogs all they could handle early, going up 7-0 and then 14-7 on their first two possessions, and after star halfback Daniel Kent went down for the year with a broken collarbone, Zags fans were beginning to write off the game, and perhaps the season. But Junior Ben Horne had a different idea. He replaced Kent, and the Zags replaced the outside pitch and option run game favored by the little man (Kent is on 5'5" and 175 pounds) with the inside running game more suited to the 5'11", 200-pound Horne. The result - a clock-dominating 20 carries for 132 yards, and a touchdown for good measure.

Defensively, the Zags were dreadful early, and good late, giving up touchdowns on the first two CSU possessions before tightening up a bit and making things rough in the second half. The play of the game defensively happened in the third quarter, when junior Mark Leonard jumped a crossing route and made a crucial pick. Gonzaga scored on the ensuing possession, went up three scores, and managed to run out the clock.

Reed Getting Hot at the Right Time

[IMGa=left]http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz337/oldfellasfootball/Reed1.jpg[/IMGa]Bulldog senior quarterback Will Reed has had a tough year so far. After throwing three picks in the Zags' opening loss, and another two at Washington in week two, it looked like we might see a change. But coach Griffin went another direction, shifting the focus of the offense to the running game in weeks three and four, and relying less on Reed's arm. After throwing 29 time in the first game of the year, and a whopping 47 times at Washington, Reed racked up only 32 attempts combined in weeks three and four. It seems to have worked, because when he was called upon against Colorado State, he responded by throwing three touchdown passes, and no interceptions. Though he only attempted 14 passes, his lowest number of the season, it appears as if the new game plan allows him to make the most of those throws. It looks like the season is turning around for the senior.

Leonard makes a huge pick to save a touchdown.

It was the Ben Horne show in Reno this week, as the 'Zags ran and ran and ran all over the Wolfpack of Nevada, pulling out a 28-19 win on the road. In the end, the Bulldog offense was too much, and the Bulldog D was just enough to get it done. Even after the second string HB for the Zags gave up a fumble for a touchdown, to make the score 21-19, the Zags didn't quit, pounding the ball down the field for the final score, the one that put it out of reach. Next week, Lousiana Tech comes to town, as do about all the Bulldog recruits.

With upcoming games against Boise State and the University of Phoenix, in which the Zags are heavy underdogs, and needing a win for bowl eligibility, Gonzaga simply had to get that win this week. Otherwise, their post-season chances looked pretty grim. To add even more pressure, the team they needed to get that win against was none other than the Fresno State Bulldogs of BCS Buster fame. No easy task.

In the early going, it looked like Fresno simply had too much for the Zags. Fresno was nearly perfect for the entire first half, scoring on every drive, no matter how well the Gonzaga called the defensive plays. Gonzaga's offense kept them in the game, and chewed enough clock to keep the game within reach, but Fresno went into the locker room up 21-17, and Gonzaga looked all used up and beaten.

    And then it happened ...

One of the best hits of the season.

On the Zags first possession of the second half, they found something. After a nice drive consisting of every run play in the Zags' playbook, Ben Horne put his signature on the game, the season, and his up-and-coming career. In what the Gonzaga fans are calling the hit of the year, junior Ben Horne posterized Fresno free safety Marvin Haynes, and finished off the run with a touchdown.

Here it is from another angle.

The Zags never looked back. They dominated the second half of the game, and Horne finished the day with 209 yards and 4 touchdowns on 29 carries. It is his first career 200-yard game, but maybe not his last.

The Zags are goin' bowlin', and there's a party in Spokane tonight, as the Gonzaga Bulldogs earn a bowl bid in their very first season in the FBS.
