    2012 Cardinal Season Preview

    [IMG][IMG]
#12 Andrew Luck and #1 Braylon Ingram will lead the Cardinal in 2012

Stanford returns with most of it's key performers from their Pac-10 Championship campaign of 2011. Last year, the Cardinal went 11-2 and won the Rose Bowl, shutting out Michigan 27-0. Redshirt Senior Quarterback Andrew Luck threw for 2,567 yards, 24 touchdowns, and just 4 interceptions. Luck was plagued by injuries last year, but still had his best season on "The Farm." Sophomore running back Braylon Ingram rushed for a school record 1,373 yards and scored 17 rushing touchdowns. Ingram also caught 49 passes for 656 yards and another 4 scores. Ingram enters the 2012 season on the preseason Heisman Trophy watchlist.
During the offseason, Senior Usua Amanam was moved from running back to wide receiver, where he saw most of his action last year. Amanam caught 52 passes last year for 687 yards which was the 2nd highest yard total for the Cardinal last season. Amanam scored 8 receiving touchdowns, which tied for the most for Stanford last year. The leading Cardinal receiver was Jamal Rashad (JR) Patterson. Patterson caught 52 passes for 743 yards and 8 touchdowns. Patterson was the deep threat for the Cardinal and made several spectacular catches. The 3rd weapon that will figure in the passing game is sophomore tight end Ben Hill who burst onto the scene last year with 38 receptions for 459 yards and 2 touchdowns. Hill's numbers would've been higher, but he missed a quarter of the season with injuries.

#21 JR Patterson makes a spectacular touchdown catch and #5 Usua Amanam scores against Northern Illinois last year

On defense, the strength of the Cardinal lies in the linebacking corps. Leading tackler, Shayne Skov returns to captain the Stanford defense. Skov recorded 82 tackles, 5 for loss, 2 sacks, and forced a fumble last year. Playing alongside Skov will be senior outside linebacker David Guillory. Guillory had the 3rd most tackles last year and looks to improve on his 55 tackles. Stanford had a youth movement in the secondary last year starting 2 true freshman and a redshirt freshman. Safety Elliott McCoy was the 2nd leading tackler for the Cardianl with 59 tackles and intercepted 2 passes during his 1st year on campus. Fellow true freshman Corey Wright came in and started as the #1 corner for Stanford and did a great job locking down #1 receivers all season. Starting opposite him was redshirt freshman Terry Mathis. Stanford had a key loss in the secondary with the graduation of Delano Howell and that void will be filled by true freshman Marlin Lake.

#10 Shayne Skov will lead the Cardinal defense, #2 Corey Wright makes a nice leaping interception last season

Stanford opens up their season Week 2 in Lexington, Kentucky against CoachSaban1221 and his Wildcats. Last year, the Cardinal opened their season facing CoachSaban when he was coaching at New Mexico. After that, the next 4 Cardinal opponents are ranked in the Top 25. Week 3 they will face the #23 Arizona Wildcats who's 4 OT win was Stanford's final loss of last season. The next week, T2Express brings his 15th ranked Texas A&M Aggies to town for Stanford's home opener, then the #24 Oregon Ducks come to Palo Alto. The Cardinal will have a bye, then travel to Los Angeles to face the #3 USC Trojans. If the Cardinal can successfully navigate that stretch, they have a chance to force their way into the BCS Title picture.

    Record Prediction: 10-2
