    Hawaii Hires a New Coach

Johnny Utah signed on this morning as the new head coach of the Hawaii Warriors. This hire is a bit bizarre given Utah's lack of coaching experience. Utah was an All American QB at Notre Dame some years back, but after a devastating knee injury at the end of his senior year he never saw a pro locker room. Instead he continued his schooling, going on to law school and and helping out as a grad assistant at his Alma Mater. After getting his degree Utah became an FBI Agent where he made his name taking down a notorious crew of bank robbers known as the ex-presidents. Johnny became jaded by the life of a law man and ended up in Hawaii mostly because the surfing is good. There are no reports about how he became a candidate but he should bring a rather unique perspective to the sideline.

    [IMG] LOOKING FORWARD

Hawaii is coming off of a disappointing 4-8 campaign from a year ago. With a new coach and new philosophies on offense and defense most experts predict that the Warriors will likely take a step back this fall. What follows is some of the key players to watch for the Warriors this coming season, the team's success likely rests on the individual success or failure of these few players

5th year Senior Kevin Spain is the unquestioned starter at quarterback according to coach Utah. For his career, Spain has a passer rating of just 86.5. He has thrown more interceptions (20) than touchdowns (12) and has only completed 40% of his passes. Coach Utah notes that Spain's athleticism is a real key in the new scheme and also that he likes what he's seen so far from his signal caller.

Junior (RS) Tailback Will Gregory will be expected to take on a much greater role than Hawaii halfbacks have traditionally. Gregory comes into the year with only 54 career rushing attempts and 7 receptions, coach Utah joked that he should exceed those numbers by week 2. Gregory's speed (95) should be a critical element to the teams offensive success.

Junior (RS) Free Safety Kendrick Van Ackeren seems to be the linchpin of the Hawaii defense. Last season Kendrick intercepted four passes, had five TFLs and a sack, plus scored a defensive touchdown. Coach Utah has given Van Ackeren the playcalling duties for the defense and has said he expects his safeties to be dynamic and versatile and to key the whole defense. Expect Van Ackeren's level of success this year to be mirrored by the whole defense.

Welcome to the Mountain West MoFo . . . I hear the defending champs talked their all time leading rusher into coming back for his senior year but are pretty horrible at basically every other position. They are the lowest rated team in the Mountain West but that didn't stop them from snagging the trophy last season. Best of luck to the Warriors.
