High Frequency of Fatal Errors/Out Of Memory?

Am I the only one who gets a FATAL ERROR/OUT OF MEMORY message about 1 out of every 5 clicks per link on the site?

My guess is that it relates to the site being moved and server switch, but I wanted to find out if i was the only one?

The forum switch won't be the biggest reason for improvement.

Right now, we are running the site on a machine that has 512 MB of RAM. Unlike your desktop machine or laptop, it doesn't have virtual memory (the memory used 'virtually' when you run out of physical memory). So, 512 MB is what we have period. Under high load (80+ users), we are hitting that limit.

So, when you click a page link, some queries are executed and memory has to be allocated to run these processes. When there is no memory, you get those errors.

As a short term solution, I have shut down everything non-critical to the way these forums function. Meaning, I have turned off email notifications, all cleanup (except backups) processes, etc. to make sure we have as much memory as possible to devote to these forums.

So, when we migrate to the new server, we will have 2048 (2GB) MB of memory to use...we shouldn't hit the max for quite a while.

Combine that with the fact I can setup the server to be more efficient from the start, AND the new forum software is much more efficient than the current one, and we should be zipping along pretty quickly.

    ---

Anyway, just thought I would explain in case anyone is interested.

In summary, the new server is 'well endowed'...

... we are starting to let them hang over here at TF.

I understand, I'll get it back up when we switch.
