How do the bowl game selections work?

I'm just curious how does a team (TCU) that finished 2 places lower than me in our conference, lost to me in our conference, is ranked lower than me in the polls get to play a bowl game that's a week later than mine against a ranked opponent.

It doesn't make sense to me. I get an also ran PAC10 opponent, he gets a ranked 2nd place Big East team. My game is one of the very first games while his is close to January. In my opinion, that would make his bowl game "bigger and better" than mine so why did he get it instead of me? I'm sure there's a lot of other Mid Majors with better bowl games than mine but I singled out TCU since we're from the same conference.

Yeah, I went in and looked it over...I'm sure it's some kind of deal where the bowls pick who they want or something. Seems kind of nutty for sure.
