In what started out to look like a defensive struggle turns out to be a rout by the Hawkeyes of the #7 Gamecocks. Iowa's Defense allows the Gamecocks to muster only 184 total yards. Key defensive and special team plays is what opened the game up for the Hawkeyes. It took awhile for the Hawkeye offense to get any kind of rhythm, driving into South Carolina territory only to miss field goals or to punt. James Vandenberg would fumble on a QB sneak on Iowa's 29 yard line giving the Gamecocks a short field to score and go up 7-0. For the rest of the 1st quarter and deep into the 2nd, both offenses would sputter. Iowa would eventually drive the field and score on a 18 yard pass from James Vandenberg to CJ Fiedorowicz. Iowa's D would then force a 3 and out with SC punting. Damon Bullock would return the punt 66 yards for TD to put Iowa up 14-7. The Gamecocks would get the ball back and on the second play of the drive Micah Hyde would intercept Shaw and return it to the house for a 48 yard TD. Iowa went into the half up 21-7. The second half wouldn't fare much better for the Gamecoks as they were able to muster little offense and continued to turn the ball over. Iowa winds up winning 42-14 and in the postgame press conference coach Mason was asked about the big win. "First of all, South Carolina is a VERY good football team, today the ball just bounced our way. We lined up our game plan and executed it. I feel that if it wasn't for Bullock's punt return in the 2nd quarter, this would have been a very different game. I look forward to meeting this team down the road in the future." Iowa storms into the top 10 with wins over #2 USC and #7 South Carolina in consecutive weeks. Next week the Hawkeyes take on North Texas.
