    Arizona @ Iowa Week 3

    Arizona @ Iowa

Iowa came out running in the first quarter mostly by Sophomore running back Jewel Hampton. Iowa got inside the redzone when Iowa QB Ricky Stanzi threw his first pick of the day to the Arizona linebacker. Arizona went back down the field, mostly threw the air and capped off the drive by a 1 yd TD run by HB Grigsby. That would be the end of the Arizona offense for the day.

Iowa got the ball back and made their way down the field, with a mix of passing and running. Jewel Hampton broke loose for a 33 yd touchdown run to make the score 7-7.

In the second quarter Hampton would score again, this time with a 1 yd run. The Iowa defense completely made Arizona 1 dimensional and Iowa would add a field goal in the 4th to make the final score 17-7 for an Iowa win.

    Iowa
    Hampton 33 attempts for 181yds and 2tds
Clayborn 5 tackles, 4 for loss and 1 sack

    Arizona
    Foles 14-19 222 yds
Grigsby 25 attempts for 27 yds and 1 td

    Iowa @ Penn State

    Iowa 15 @ Penn State 14
    [IMG]

The first conference game for Iowa came down to the end as Iowa inched by previously unbeaten Penn State.

    1st quarter
Iowa received to start the game and was able to drive down the field through the air and on the ground. The drive came to a halt when running back Jewel Hampton left the game with back spasms and wouldn't be available again till the 2nd half. FR(RS) back Jeff Brinson tried to pick up the slack on the ground but the Penn State defense proved to be too much and Iowa had to settle for a 47 yd FG by Ryan Donahue.

Penn State got the ball and promptly went to the air early. On a 3rd down the Iowa defense had the Lions stopped but the Penn State line gave Daryl Clark tons of time and heaved the ball to the back of the end zone, the ball went though the hands of Iowa CB Amari Spivey and found SR wide out Graham Zug for a 45 yard TD pass. End of first quarter Penn State leads 7 to 3.

    2nd Quarter
Iowa was forced to punt giving the ball back to the Lions who wasted no time in driving down the field, this time using their running back Evan Royster. Penn State capped the drive off with another TD pass to Ryan Scherer, this time from 3 yards out. With the way the Penn State defense was stuffing the run and their balanced offense attack it, looked like Penn State might pull away. The teams exchanged punts and it led to Iowa eventually driving down the field and kicking another FG, this time 30 yards by Donahue, as time expired in the half. Penn State 14 Iowa 6.

    3rd Quarter
Penn State recieved to start the second half and went to the air again. The drive came to an end when Clark threw a deep interception to a reciever who was double covered by Spivey and SS Tyler Sash, who came away with the pick. Iowa was able to get into FG range and kick another one from 22 yards out to make the score Penn State 14 Iowa 9.

On the next Penn State possession, running back Royster fumbled the ball on the Penn State 30 and was fallen on by Iowa DE Christian Ballard. Iowa's offense took the field, with RB Jewel Hampton returning and was immediately able to get the ground game going again. Hampton scored a TD from 4 yards out to give Iowa the 15 to 14 lead. Iowa went for 2 and was stuffed, holding on to a 1 point lead going into the 4th quarter.

    4th Quarter
The 4th quarter was a defensive battle for both teams, Penn State was forced to punt on their first drive, but I gave them the ball right back when I threw a pick right at the Penn State corner. They were able to drive down the field and set up for a FG to take the lead, which they missed off the left upright giving Iowa the ball back. Hampton took to the ground again, giving Iowa several 3rd down conversions, as PSU burned timeouts in an attempt to get the ball back. Iowa was able to continue driving until Stanzi was able to take a knee to run out the clock giving Iowa a one point win in Happy Valley.

    Stats
    Iowa
Jewel Hampton: 25 carries for 103 yards and 1 TD
Tyler Sash: 7 tackles 1 interception 18 yd interception return
Ryan Donahue: 3/4 FG long of 48

    Penn State
    Daryl Clark: 14-23 218 yards 2 td 1 Int
    Jerome Hayes: 14 tackles 3tfl 2 sacks
Ollie Ogbu: 8 tackles 3 tfl 2 sacks

    Iowa @ Michigan State

Iowa won the toss and went right down the field with a combination of passing and running, only to end up kicking a FG from 22 yds. 3-0 End of 1st Quarter.

The second quarter was a defensive battle between the two, Iowa was the only team to enter the redzone when they were turned away when a fake FG pass went wide. 3-0 Iowa at Half

The action picked up in the 3rd with MSU driving down the field on their first possession capping it off with a Baker 2 yd TD run. Iowa responded right away when Ricky Stanzi hit DJK down the sideline for a 40 yd TD reception. MSU was able to drive back down and kick a FG from 37 yds. Tied at 10 after 3.

    Indiana @ Iowa

Well this one wasn't nearly as close to what the score shows, Iowa wins 34-14 but it could have been worse for Indiana. The nations 2nd leading rusher, Jewel Hampton, went down early in the game with back spasms and would not be available the rest of the game. He had to be replaced with (RS)FR running back Jeff Brinson, who did a fine job stepping into the role. Iowa QB Ricky Stanzi had his best game of the season. The Iowa defense was just as dominant as they have been all year, shutting down Indiana after their first drive. The only other score Indiana could muster the rest of the game is when DJK fumbled a punt on the 20 yd line which the Hoosiers were able to pick up and run back.

    Key Players

    Ricky Stanzi: 15-23 254yds 2tds 0 int
Colin Sandeman: 6 rec 135 yds 1 td
    Pat Angerer: 8 tack 3tf

    Indiana

    Ben Chappell: 18-24 157yds 1td 1int
    N.Polk: 11 tack

A defensive performance for the Hawkeyes against Northwestern as the offense just could not get anything going against a Wildcat D the continually put 8 guys in the box. Iowa scored on a Ricky Stanzi 21 yard run, a Greg Castillo fumble recovery for a touchdown and two Ryan Donahue field goals. The Iowa defense let Northwestern throw for a ton of yards, but turned them away in the red zone repeatedly. The Wildcats were able to find the end zone once with under a minute left in the game on a Kafka pass. Iowa wins 20-7.
