The Kansas City Chiefs hope to bounce back from the embarrassing 28 point lead giveaway which resulted in a loss to the Indianapolis Colts in last years wild card playoff lost. The Chiefs started off last season 9-0 before finishing 11-5 despite some people calling their schedule soft. The Chiefs finished second in the division including two loses to the Broncos. Alex Smith is the returning QB even though some people don't have the confidence he can lead this team to the next step. He had one of his best seasons a pro, throwing for over 3,300 yards with 23 TDs and 7 INTs. The first 5 games will really test Smith's ability as an NFL QB as he has to travel to Denver, then New England, and at San Francisco.

Jamal Charles had a solid year last year but will need to contribute more to help lead the Chiefs to a division title. He rushed for over 1,200 yards with 12 TDs. While Charles isn’t one of the league’s biggest backs, he is one of the fastest and most explosive players in the game. He is a threat to make a big play any time he touches the ball.

    Chiefs Receiving Core
    [IMG]
The Chiefs hope to get more production from their wide receiver unit. Dwayne Bowe had the most receptions among wide receivers last season with 57. Next was Donnie Avery with 40 catches. At the tight end position, injuries just about wiped out this group in 2013. Anthony Fasano, the top tight end, missed seven games. When healthy, Fasano is a reliable receiver who can also block.

2014 Kansas City Top Draft Picks
    RD 1. OLB Dee Ford
Dee played DE in Auburn's 4-3 defense but will make the move to OLB in the Chiefs defense. Right now the Chiefs have Justin Houston and Hali manning the OLB spots but could play some in the nickel defense.

    RD 2. No Pick
    RD 3. CB Phillip Gaines
Phillip is a big corner, measuring in at 6'0. He isn't expected to play much right away with Marcus Cooper and Sean Smith manning the CB spots. Could turn out to be a solid pick for the Chiefs in the future.

    2014 Chiefs Schedule
    upload_2014-8-4_15-59-15.png
Key Games: NE, @ SF, SEA, @ ARZ, @ PIT, and all divisional games

This 2014 schedule is a bit more challenging for the Chiefs considering 3 of the first 6 teams were in the playoffs from the previous year. Also the Chiefs road opponents were a combined 40-24 at home last year. Then with the defending SB champions coming into town and with a match up in Arizona , nothing is given. Then the obvious AFC West division games, which bolstered 3 playoff teams, this could be a long season for the Chiefs or a really good one if the turnovers can again pile up for that tough Chief defense. But the real question remains....Can Alex Smith take that next step as a QB?

Overall the Chiefs defense will be solid with key players returning and the addition of some new ones, but will need to improve in total defense. Can they really depend on the turnovers to pile up again? Offensively the Chiefs have Jamal Charles, who is expected to carry the work load on offense. With WRs Dwayne Bowe and Donnie Avery catching passes, can they open up this offense enough with Smith throwing them passes and contend to win the AFC West? Can Alex Smith become more than just a game manager?
    Projected Record: 9-7

    Chiefs Training Camp Update Offense
    [IMG]

The Chiefs have had a solid showing from their QBs so far this training camp. Alex Smith has been looking incredibly sharp hoping to build on last year while the battle for the number 2 spot could get interesting. While Chase Daniels has the experience, rookies Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray could make a run at that back up spot. Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray has made good progress but still need time to develop. It could get interesting once cuts are made because I doubt the Chiefs will keep 4 QBs on the active roster.

    Skill Positions
    [IMG]

We'll start off with 4th round pick, De'anthony Thomas who has been wowing coaches and players with his speed and athleticism. He is fast and has shown good field awareness. He also has been returning kick offs and punts.
Dwayne Bowe has had a solid training camp thus far. A.J. Jenkins and Kyle Wilson are battling it out for the number 3 spot behind Donnie Avery.

Anthony Fasano is poised to have a break out here this year as a TE. He is an the best shape he has been in so far. Second year player Travis Kelce has shown really good speed being able to get behind some DBs and making plays on the ball.

Jamal Charles is another guy that is having a great camp. He looks as fast as ever. The battle for the back up RB could be another spot to look out for with veteran Kniles Davis and Joe McKnight battling it out. Its been pretty neck and neck with those two.

Offensive line for the Chiefs will definitely be something to watch this camp and into the season. Having no one start all 16 games last year, Coach Reid hopes to get some chemistry with this line. Eric Fisher will be protecting Smith's blindside and he has had a decent camp. Jeff Allen looks to be the best player on this line and can hope to be the anchor at LG.

    Cheifs Defensive Training Camp Update

Things have been heating up on the defensive side of the ball for the Chiefs during training camp. Last year the Chiefs were great at creating turnovers. It all starts with the guys up front on the defensive line.
    CHIEFSCAMP%20ME%20073014%20DRE%200953f.jpg
Dontari Poe will be leading the defensive line. He has had a great camp thus far and has high expectations going into the new season. One spot to watch on the D-line will be at the LE spot. As of right now 3 year veteran Allen Bailey holds down the starting spot, but Mike Catapano could make a push for some playing time.
    CHIEFSCAMP%20ME%20073014%20DRE%200953f.jpg
The linebacking core for the chiefs could arguably be the best in the NFL. With Houston, Johnson, and Hali, the Chiefs could be a tough team to deal with. Rookie Dee Ford has had a solid camp so far, making great strides from DE to OLB, he should see plenty of playing time.
    CHIEFSCAMP%20ME%20073014%20DRE%200953f.jpg

Eric Berry has been looking great after rolling his ankle early in camp. He has shown a lot of speed and great play making ability. A depth chart battle for the number 2 CB spot is heating up between Chris Owens and Marcus Cooper. Both guys have had great camps and are deserving of that number 2 spot.

Kansas City Chiefs Trade Justin Houston for Center Alex Mack
    [IMG]

"I couldn't be happier with this trade", Coach Reid said during his press conference. "We've managed to significantly upgraded our offensive line while providing a quality starting at outside linebacker in Dee Ford". This was a big trade for the Chiefs, they desperately needed help on the o-line and can build for the future around Alex Mack. On defense, the loss of Justin Houston could hurt initially, but Dee Ford has a lot of potential and is expected to be a great player in this league.

Alex Mack mixing it up with DT Dontari Poe. Both Mack and Poe are expected to have a solid year for the Chiefs.
