Week 6: #11 Utah at Iowa State

Another sloppy first quarter had the Cyclones trailing 14-3. It could have been more but the defense stepped up forcing a turnover after the Utes had great field position the entire quarter thanks to a pair of Jerome Tiller fumbles. After losing Robinson for the season, the Cyclones offense appeared more one dimensional than ever, and Tiller was struggling against a defense expecting pass.

A tired defense continued to stand strong against the tricky Utah offense. In an attempt to mix it up on offense and give the defense a breatherthe Cyclones committed to keeping the ball on the ground. The results were flashes of brilliance, but unsustained drives just led to punt after punt as Coach Gorrell searched for answers. The defense held Utah to only a field goal in the 2nd quarter, and helped by 2 facemask penalties the Cyclones punched it in the endzone on a 1yard run by Tiller with 9 seconds remaining in the half to gain some momentum although still trailing 17-10 at the half.

The Cyclones lost some of their momentum as they failed to capitalize on getting the ball to open the second half punting yet again. Utah marched down the field to kick a field goal to go up 20-10. Not panicking, the Cyclones responded with a long methodical drive of their own, scoring a TD on a 1 yard rush by RB Woody to keep the game within reach. Another defensive stop gave the Cyclones the ball at the end of the 3rd down 20-17.

Unfortunately, yet another punt and a methodical Utah drive left the Cyclones down 27-17 as they received the kickoff with 4:28 remaining. A quick 3 and out and the fans started heading for the exits. An incompletion on first down saved some time and after two rushed the Utah punted with 2:36 remaining. Tiller and the offense took the field with all three timeouts and down 10, looking for magic for the second straight week.

With 1:14 left, there was still hope. The appeared to be some magic left as Jerome Tiller found Darius Darks in the endzone after leading the Cyclones down the field, keeping all 3 of their timeouts. The previous play Tiller escaped the grasp of one defensive lineman and broke another tackle on a 7 yard scramble that converted a 4th and 5 to extend the game and hopes of Iowa State. With all three timeouts, the Cyclones kicked it deep putting the game in the hands of their defense. Unfortunately a first down sealed the game as the Cyclones lose a heart breaker at home.

    STATS: Tiller 14-37 207 yards 1 TD 0 INT; 20 rushes 118 yards 1 TD
    White: 15 rushes 33 yards 3 rec 45 yards
Darks 3 rec 59 yards TD

Tillers legs still prove to be more effective than his arm in the option read offense. White played well in spots in his first full game replacing Robinson. The Cyclones fall to 3-3 (1-1) as they prepare for a huge Big XII matchup in Norman, OK next week.

I'm just now playing NCAA for the first time in years so I could use some practice. Would anyone be up for a practice game tonight after the NFL game? I need some help getting ready for Iowa.

Hey fellas, I'm really liking The Bigs.

Just curious what your all's estimates for the duration of this league is.

I personally, am hoping for a minimum of 5. It would be awesome if this spilled over into 2012.

Sorry guys, instead of the 2AM eastern advance, it will be done around 4AM eastern. I actually have a soccer game tonight that doesn't start until 2AM eastern and i will advance it as soon as i get home.

Now this could all be avoided if ya'll get your crap done beforehand and allow your commish to go to sleep a lil bit earlier. Just sayin...lol

I'm hoping Gerry Keith will give me a hard commit this week after a monster recruiting week before he goes to Ohio State for a visit next week.
