Maryland Wins OT Thriller vs Duke

This was a hell of a game in College Park as the Terp hosted rival duke. Duke would jump out to a quick score by standout WR Vernon who would dominate all day. Maryland QB CJ Brown would struggle mightily in this one unlike his other starts. He through his first INT of the season then threw 3 more with a total of 4 on the day. The game got clutch late as Maryland looked to be doomed after another INT but then MLB Goree saved the game with a huge pick 6. Maryland would then look to win as time expired but SHANKED the 28 yd FG off the right upright after being iced. OT would ensue with Duke playing offense first and missing a 40 yarder off the crossbar. This would allow Maryland to pound the rock a few time before capping off the game with a gimmi FG. Maryland is now 3-0 and off to a great start. They host Colorado and Coach Uncleho next week and look to wear the Pride Jerseys the first time this season. 3.png

Kain Colter came-out to play today against the Akron Zips, posting 8-14 for 176 yrds and 1 TD. Colter was as good on the ground as he was in the air, rushing for 66 yards and a TD. Treyvon Green and J. Perkins showcased their skills once more, each recording 100+ yards and a 3 touchdowns combined game. The N'western offensive line gave up 0 sacks these week, their first clean sheet this year. Akron on the other hand...4 sacks taken and an interception thrown, giving N'western a forced turnover 3-weeks-straight. Coach Ken Mooney is proud of his boys, and their early success "We have been fortunate to start this season off at home, but home field doesn't get you wins. This team worked real hard during the offseason, they work hard during the week and it is showing out on the football field." N'western faces its hardest opponent yet in week 4 when they travel to Texas to take on Texas A&M.

    Washington - 31
    Arizona State - 10

Washington was able to defeat division foe Arizona State and move to 2-0 in conference play with a win at home. The game started off a little bit rough, with a pick on the first drive by Price. He eventually settled down, and Washington was able to go on a 24 point run leading into the half. Then, the offense pretty much died until Arizona State was able to score 10 unanswered in the fourth. Their comeback aspirations were squelched by a pick 6 from Trufant. The star of the show continues to be WR James Johnson who has done a great job of getting open and turning small plays into big plays and stepped up for Kasen Williams who spent a lot of time on the bench injured. He had 6 catches for 127 yards with the TD coming on a 59 yard pass. Callier and Sankey fared well on the ground, combining for 124 yards on 16 carries. Price had his worst game of the season, completing 13/21 passes for 235 yards, 3 TDs, 2 INTs, and 3 sacks. He will need to lower the turnover numbers or the Huskies will definitely get caught in a loss. Drops were the name of the game for the Sun Devils. Apparently they were not used to the rain, and it really hurt a lot of drives.

Next week the Huskies will travel to East Lansing to face the Michigan State Spartans.

The Spartan Army Marches on Chapel Hill

    [IMG][IMG]
At 0-2 Michigan State was on the road to face a 2-0 UNC team that had just posted wins over Marshall and Kansas State.
Fortunately for the Spartan football program and their fans coach Danny Mack was able to get the team back on track.

The team was unsuccessful playing a more wide open style in the first two games of the year so they employed a much more Pro Style offense against the Heels.
Short passes, play action, screens, and power running were in full effect.

A huge play early in the game saw ROLB Denicos Allen strip the UNC runner at the 1 yard line as he was about to score.
Michigan State fell on the ball and those 7 points would be the difference in the game in the end.

The teams battled back on forth throughout the game until the 4th quarter when State got the ball with a few minutes to go, game tied 17-17.
On third down QB Andrew Maxwell found WR Keith Mumphery on a short out for the first down.
But that wasn't the end of the play! Mumphery used a sweet spin move to break the corner's ankles and take it to the house for a 73 YD touchdown!

Carolina would answer back and drive the ball down the field. Renner was solid throwing the ball all day and he took the team to within striking distance.
On the last play of the game QB Bryn Renner found WR Reggie Wilkins coming across the goal line, but despite diving and making a great play at the ball, Wilkins just couldn't bring it in as the ball bounced off his hands.

Early turnovers by the Iowa offense and the utter dominance of Danny O'Brien and Monte Ball were to much Iowa to overcome in this beating. INT's on two of Iowas first three drives made it a 21-0 game after the first quarter. The offense regrouped and was able to move the ball the rest of the game, but the Badger offense never took their foot off the pedal. Iowa's defense was confused and outplayed. This was a key division loss that almost torpedoes any hope Iowa had of going to the conference championship game.

    Cal 33
    Colorado 31

Colorado jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, which included the 73 yard TD pass to WR Paul Richardson, and kept Cal off the scoredboard. The second quarter though saw the Golden Bears run off 24 unanswered points as they scored on their opening possession of the second quarter. A pick six thrown by CU QB Nick Hirschman gave Cal the lead at 14-10, then CU WR Keenan Canty fumbled the ball after a first down reception on the next drive. That turnover led to a FG by Cal. Eventually up 24-10 late in the second quarter, Cal gave up another big play, this time a 62 yard TD pass from Hirschman to Canty that cut the lead to 24-17 at the half.

Colorado would march down the field on their first possession and tie the game at 24-24 in the middle of the third quarter on a 31 yard TD pass from Hirschman to Canty again. Cal would get another FG on their next drive to take the lead again 27-24 and held that until the late in the fourth quarter when they extended it with another FG to go up 30-24. Hirshman ran a great two minute drill however and was able to put the Buffaloes in the endzone with 1:39 left in the game on a 9 yard TD pass to DeVaugn Thornton to go up 31-30. The Buffalo defense failed again to stop the Cal offense and let them drive the ball deep and ultimately gave up the FG with 0:05 left, CU failed to return the ensuing kickoff and lost the game.

The Cal kicker went 4/4 on FGs for the day with them all being short kicks (25, 26, 20, 18) after taking it deep into CU territory multiple times.

The first half in Atlanta was a back and worth battle with very little plays being made on the defensive side of the ball. We had a FG hit the upright right before the half ended and we went into the locker room tied 24-24..Coming out in the second half we forced an interception in their territory and we were able to tack on 3 points.. Next offensive possession QB Michael Rocco hit Tim Smith on a 60 yard TD pass. GT refused to quit however, they cut the lead back to 3 going into the final quarter of play. Stout defense down the stretch and an insurance TD in the 4th was enough to close the game out and secure our first conference win. This was a huge game for our confidence after the close lose at home to FSU.,

Offensive Player of the Game: Michael Rocco 20-32 307 yards 3TD's 1INT.. Perry Jones 23 carries 145 yards 1 TD 2 receptions for 16 yards..

Defensive Player of the Game: MLB Steve Greer lead the team with 9 tackles and caused a forced fumble that was returned for a TD in the 2nd quarter..

Next week will be another huge road test for the Cavaliers as we head to play (2-0) #12 TCU..

Champaign, IL -- UCLA was able to get their first win of this young season in week three versus the University of Illinois Fighting Illini in Champaign. UCLA was able to mount an impressive 24-7 lead going into halftime, and preserve it till the fourth quarter but an interception by Illini cornerback Jack Ramsey sparked a resurgence for the home team and they were able to score 17 straight points to send it to overtime. UCLA's defense was able to step up in OT and force the Illini to kick a field goal and on the Bruins next possession, Freshman quarterback Brett Hundley was able to find Jerry Rice Jr for the touchdown and the win.

Hundley had a better game this week going 19 for 26 with 271 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Running back Jonathan Franklin rushed for 77 yards on 22 carries and had two touchdowns.
