Los Angeles, CA -- The score was closer than it probably should have been, but the UCLA Bruins were able to start off on the right foot this season thanks in large part to Sophomore QB Brett Hundley. After a rocky Freshman season, Hundley looks to come in this year and take control of this offense. If today was any indication, he looks to be much improved and more comfortable in the starting QB role. He finished 17 for 24 passing for 301 yards and 4 touchdowns with no interceptions. Senior running back Malcolm Jones, who was a backup last year, also had a strong performance rushing for 179 yards on 26 carries and 2 touchdowns.

The Bruins were able to get going early when Hundley hit TE John Young for a 12 yard touchdown to put the Bruins up 7-0. Nevada was able to answer back with a touchdown of their own when QB Devin Combs hit TE Kolby Arendse for a 51 yard touchdown to tie the game. The second quarter was all UCLA when Hundley was able to hit WR Shaquelle Evans on a pair of long strikes, one for 56 yards and the other for 80 yards to make the score 21-7 at half.

Nevada struck on their first drive of the second half to make it a one touchdown game, however Hundley would find paydirt again, this time hitting Jerry Rice Jr on a 36 yard touchdown to make the score 28-14 headed into the fourth quarter. The Bruins would then start to pound the rock to eat up the clock on the shoulders of Malcolm Jones who was able to score a pair of touchdowns in the fourth. Nevada wouldn't go down without a fight, putting up two more touchdowns of their own off of some poor defensive play from the Bruins secondary, however they really never threatened and the Bruins were able to ice the game.

Next week the Bruins are on a bye before they face BYU in week three on the road.

    Maryland 38
    Navy 7

Maryland opened the 2013 season at home hosting rival Navy. They had an offensive explosion like the 4th of July racking up 456 yards of offense. HB Pickett had a huge game on the ground rushing for 200 yards and 3 TDs. Freshman WR Diggs made his debut with a huge TD catch and ended up with 79 yards on 3 catches. On the defensive side we gave up a lot of yards but stopped them when it counted, getting turnovers on 4th downs and big INTs. SS Clark let the team in tackles with 9 plus a sack. No complaints thus far but we have a MUCH harder opponent next week on the road at Iowa.

Colorado went up 21-7 in the first half of this game only to turn the ball over twice and let CSU keep it close all game. A fumble by HB Tony Jones was returned 60 yards for a TD by CSU and QB Nick Hirschman was intercepted by the DE on a screen pass which gave the ball back to the CSU offense. They were able to get another TD out of that turnover. Jones did carry 7 or 8 times for 100+ yards and a TD before breaking his finger. He will miss the next 4 weeks , and ROLB Woodson who is the starter, tore his pectoral and will miss at least a week. WR Paul Richardson caught 7 balls for 131 yards and a TD, while Hirschman did add 3 TD passes to his interception, and completed 84% of his passes.

Michigan State in an OT Thriller!!

Wow what a crazy good game! Tmac was awesome and could have won this game just as easily as I.
The game was dead even 10-10 approaching halftime and the Spartans were on the march.
Maxwell tried to throw a short route out in the flat and Iowa's Gavin Smith snagged it and took it to the house with only 13 seconds left.
Iowa 17 MSU 10 end of the first half.

3rd quarter was MSU's as they would be the only team to score. MSU ran the ball a few times setting up a play action pass.
Maxwell hit Mumphery on a 40 yard TD pass which ended with Mumphery stretched out and diving into the endzone to catch the ball.

    17-17 end 3Q.

In the 4th Q the teams traded TD's to make 24-24.
Then Iowa had the ball and was driving for what could have been game winning points.
Suddendly Rudock gets picked off and MSU is in business.
MSU tries to move into FG range to win the game and bam! Maxwell under throws a ball and is picked off!
Iowa completes a pass and has a 44 yarder to win it. The FG kick was just short against a 4 mph wind missing by a couple inches.

    24-24 on to Overtime.

MSU moved the ball on the first possession and RB Nick Hill followed blockers into the endzone from 11 yards out to give MSU the 31-24 lead.
Rudock threw an INT on 4th down and the game ended with a Spartan victory.

    Washington - 17
    Illinois - 10

The #2 ranked team in the country came into Champaign and were fortunate to come out with a victory. Illinois got on the board first with a field goal. Both offenses stuttered repeatedly, with both defenses dropping quite a few potential picks. Washington was able to tack on a field goal near the beginning of the second quarter. Washington was able to score the first TD on a game on a read option keeper following an interception by the Husky defense. As the game started to get late, Washington was gearing to run out the clock, but ended up having to punt. This was returned for a TD to tie up the game. Washington was able to move down the field and scored a TD with a minute left to take the lead. An interception allowed them to kneel it out for the win.

This game featured the Alabama Transfer QB Phillip Sims. Sims made the start over Michael Rocco who has lead this team the past two years. Including setting single season records at Virginia. That did not go over well with some of the Virginia locals but I decided to put the best player on the field to win the game, Sims was simply better in practice. It's great to know that you have Rocco on the bench if you need him, and that's what happened in this one. Phillip Sims started the game and lead several good drives before getting injured for almost 2 quarters. That allowed Michael Rocco to step in and throw 6-11 103 1 TD and 1 INT. The interception was far from his fault, however he hit the TE in stride on an out route, right in his hands and it deflected backwards and right into the hands of a trailing LB. Terrible luck there but he had a great outing coming off the bench.
Phillip sends reentered the game and played good making one mistake on a deep ball that he shouldn't have thrown. Other than that he played fine, the offense just never got into a groove and put up many points. Sims hit Darius Jennings on a short curl route which Jennings took 25 yards to the house to put us up by 24 with 4:19 to play in the 3rd. The defense continued to bend up but not break in the second half and HB Kevin Parks was able to add 115 yards on the ground to run a lot of clock in the 4th. Ball State scored late in the fourth to cut it to 16 but we recovered the onside kick and ran the clock out.
Not a pretty start but there was a lot of positive things I saw from both the offense and the defense. Especially the production increase from the HB position. If that can continue to improve as the season progresses then we can potentially become more balanced than we were last year. Kevin Parks contributed last year but has seem to really hit into the starting role nicely at HB.
Despite the injury Phillip Sims finished the game going 12-17 148 yards 2 TD's and 1 INT. Not a bad premiere, hope it settles the UVA nation down just a little it. We will have a big test this week when Colorado comes to town looking to build off there recent win over Colorado State. Should be a great battle.
Player of the Game: FS Kameron Mack recorded 6 tackles and 1 INT, this kid is big and fast and seems to have play great in space and in zone coverage.
