Cal Escapes Iowa City with Win

This game featured two high quality squads with Iowa getting the slight nod due to their offense. Unfortunately the fleXbox One offense Iowa brought with them today would challenged all afternoon by the Cal defensive line.

Field position was the name of the game today. With each offense being able to reach mid-field before stalling. The punter for both teams was often able to pin the other offense inside their own 20 yard line. With neither team willing to turn the ball over within it's own redzone, much of the game was 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Both secondaries were all over the passing games. Both offenses only combined for just over 500 yards and the game came down to a one possession once Iowa scored their first touchdown of the day late in the fourth quarter (3:23). Down 14-9, Iowa choose to go for two to make a 3 point game. Again, the Cal defense rose to the occasion and sacked Iowa QB Stewart before he could even get off a pass.

Cal lost their starting RB in the third quarter and had to rely on TRUE freshman RB Jordan Harrison who was the top recruited user RB last year. As a balanced back he was able to keep the sticks, and the clock, moving for Cal as they eventually would run out the clock on Iowa.

Great game bud. Only time I could move the ball was in the shot gun. I will be moving to a more power run orientated offense. Here if hova gives me the OK

In a game that saw a match-up that pitted an undersized Virginia team against a Texas team full of giants, things got ugly in a hurry. The Longhorns scored quickly and often forcing the Cavs to completely abandon the run oriented game-plan and resort to the pass trying to play catch up. Coach Evans said it appeared that the Texas team had been recruiting juggernauts over the course of the past few years. Everything we tried either failed or back-fired completely. Out of 62 offensive plays we turned the ball over 7 times and that is not a good thing. We gave them the opportunity to score more points than we gave ourselves. It is hard to say that we sucked this game or they are a team full of All-American NFL gonna-be superstars. Number wise we did ok until you get to the turnover stat. We will go back, look at the film and make the necessary adjustments. You can't win them all.

Holy crap -68 rushing yards. The Texas defensive line must have been in beast mode.

The -89 yards on sacks kinda hurt the rushing total or lack thereof. I didn't have a chance of winning this game.

    #13 Maryland 34
    Duke 13

Maryland headed to NC this week to take on the Dukies. The game was dominated from the get-go with Maryland putting up 461 yards of offense and scoring with ease. The Duke offense was a joke getting sacked 11 times and doing nothing but getting sacked or QB taking off with the ball in the "hurry up" offense. We were solid on the ground and air and the only bad new was losing our HB Franklin for 5 weeks with a bad back. Next week we head back home to host WVU in a rivalry game.

    QB Montana 342 Rating 9/11 223 YDS, 3 TDs
HB Franklin 9 Carries, 112 YDS, TD
WR Allen 3 Rec, 115 YDS, TD

DT Williams 8 Tackles, 4 Sacks

The #2 team in the nation, the Michigan State Spartans came to Boulder this week to take on the #9 Colorado Buffaloes in a battle of top ten teams. It was a close game all day and the real difference in the game was the sloppy play of the Spartan receiving corp. I believe there were 6 drops as a unit that left multiple first downs and a bunch of yards out on the field. The Buffalo defense was able to knock a few down themselves but these drops were basically all wide open receivers who took a peek down field before securing the catch.

Colorado got on the board first late in the first quarter after both teams were feeling each other out and punted early. A 48 yard FG put Colorado up 3-0 with 3:10 left in the quarter. Michigan State wouldn't be down for long though and put a touchdown on the scoreboard in the second quarter on a 3 yard run (4:08) by HB J. Blankenship after a methodical drive. Colorado would have to punt on their next possession and Sparty looked to extend the lead. QB D. Newberry was intercepted by Buffalo MLB John Sanders on that drive though and gave Colorado another crack at some points. QB Justin Jackson found WR Rich Mayes down the right sideline on a 74 yard pass play with less than a minute to go that set up a first and goal. With the clock running down it took a couple of tries but HB Donta Abron took it in on a 1 yard TD run (0:13) to give Colorado a 10-7 lead at halftime.

The third quarter was all Michigan State from a scoring standpoint as they pretty much slowed down the Buffalo offense and forced a few punts. Sparty hit FGs of 41 and 46 yards in the quarter with the last one coming at the very end which gave them a 13-10 lead with one quarter to play.

Most of the fourth quarter went as the third, with both teams not finding much momentum on offense and punting the football. Colorado would finally start to move down the field late in the game to mid field. Jackson then found WR Bruce Vandermeulen down the left side line on a 50 yard scoring pass to take the lead at 17-10 with 2:20 left in the game. Knowing they had plenty of time left plus all their timeouts Michigan State marched down the field into the red zone with less than a minute to play. On third down Newberry got sacked setting up a fourth and long, with the first down at the 10 or maybe the 9 yard line. Newberry hit his man on an out route but he came up a yard shy and it was a turnover on downs. Colorado then kneeled on the ball to run out the clock.

Gg man 6 dropped passes killed my offense. That home field advantage was the difference.

The high altitude must have gotten to those receivers.
