#10 PSU 28
#4 ASU 24
#10 Penn State welcomed #4 Arizona State to Happy Valley for a top ten showdown. PSU had the task of trying to stop ASU’s multi-talented QB Kelly Davis. PSU opened up on O first and would start off on a bad note when QB Nick White would throw a pick early in the drive. PSU would manage to hold ASU to only a FG to limit the damage. PSU would then drive the length of the field only to be stopped on 4th and inches on the goal line. PSU would force a punt and get a good return and then punch it in 6 plays later to go up 7-3. Both defenses would pretty much bottle up the offensives for much of the first half. ASU’s 4-2-5 would put a lot of pressure on the Nittany Lion offense and made running tough.
The complete opposite would take place in the second half as each offense would each hit big plays and go TD for TD. ASU would open up the second half and drive right down the field in 4 plays to take the lead. PSU would answer right back with a TD drive of its own. PSU would enter the 4th with a 21-17 lead and Coach Chase knew it might come down to who had the ball last. ASU would score at the 6min mark to go up 24-21 look to hold on for the win. PSU would answer the call with a long drive with a good mix of running and passing to drive the field to take a 28-24. With two TO’s and a little over 2mins ASU had plenty of time to pull out the win. Pushing the ball out the 40 ASU would make its only mistake and a costly one as Davis would throw into coverage and get picked off. PSU would pick one first down and run out the clock for a huge win.
