The Nittany Lions traveled to Blacksburg to take on the Hokies of Virginia Tech. After have a tune up game last week against ECU Penn State knew it would have its work cut out for them. VT elected to receive the ball the first and had little trouble marching down the field. With 1st an GL from the 8 the Nittany Lions D would tighten up and hold Tech to a FG. Both teams would exchange punts on the next two series.
Penn State would then break through and get on the board on their second possession after a 70yrd run by Marcus O’Connor. PSU would follow up the run with 8yd TD pass to Lance Simpson. VT would answer the TD with a FG with another strong stand by the PSU D. On PSU’s next series the offense would string together a 4 and half minute drive which result in a Marcus O’Connor TD catch.
The next VT series would end up putting Penn State in the driver’s seat going into the half. With a little over 30 seconds left before half VT would come and try to get on the board before the end of the half. VT QB would try and throw a seam route which would be picked off. Going for the knockout punch PSU would go deep on the very next play after the TO and QB Ashton Smith would hit Lance Simpson again on a 29yrd TD pass.
Going into the half 21-6 instead of 14-6 was a huge momentum shift going into half for PSU as they would take the second half kickoff. The second half would be dominated by the PSU D as they would get good pressure on VT and get another INT. VT would struggle to move the ball all second half as PSU would show a good mix of coverage’s and pressures. On O PSU would run the ball strong and throw some timely passes to secure the win. Great win for the Nittany Lions in a tough place to play.
