    SEASON PREVIEW

Manager RedAL returns to Lille for the start of Season 8 in the TFS. In a draft-day surprise, the French club became available after RedAL had already agreed to a pre-contract with Saint-Etienne. The manager used his right-of-first-refusal to return to the club that gave him his first chance in the TFS.

Since leaving Lille at the end of Season 2, manager RedAL could not find a comfortable fit, having spent seasons in Germany, Netherlands, and Spain. After a 3rd place finish in Sesaon 4 with PSV Eindhoven, it seemed the manager had finally found a home. But an unexplainable change of heart saw manager RedAL depart the club for Hoffenheim, where he spent a season before returning to PSV, and promptly leaving them once again for a failed experiment in Spain.

Now back at Lille, many things have changed. Gone is the entire attacking front line of Seasons 1 and 2, which included Moussa Sow, Gervinho, and Eden Hazard. Yohan Cabaye and Mickael Landreau have also left, with Mathieu Debuchy seemingly on his way out as well. But the club retained the heart of their midfield with Florent Balmont and Rio Mavuba patrolling the middle of the park. Marvin Martin will add an attacking flair, while speedster Dimitry Payet and skilled dribbler Salamon Kalou will patrol the wings.

At the back, Adil Rami has returned to Valencia, but Aurelian Chedjou partners with Marko Basa for a formidable central pairing. If Debuchy does indeed leave, Franck Beria will move to RB, while young starlet Lucas Digne will take over at LB. Steve Elana, a summer signing, becomes the #1 with Landreau departing.

Season 8 looks to be another filled with talent from top to bottom. Many pundits have predicted Lille as a favorite for a championship, but those pundits should also be aware of the up-and-down nature of manager RedAL's history. Many times he has found himself near the top 2 in the standings, only to fall into a massive slump. Familiarity with the club and talent level at it should help, but it is ultimately up to the manager to pull the right strings.

    MATCHDAY 1 at Marseille

Marseille were the better side in this one, and deserved better than to lose all 3 points from the match. The home side threatened repeatedly with a barrage of crosses into the box, most with lethal accuracy. But S. Elana was up to the task, making a string of incredible saves to keep the scoreline knotted at 0-0. M. Martin was a menace making runs from midfield, and a brilliant solo effort was thwarted when his shot hit an offsides N. Roux in the box. But Martin would not be denied, and in the 2nd half, he made a strong run into the box, his shot saved, but deflected into the path of D. Payet, who buried it for the only goal of the match.

"We were definitely lucky to have taken all 3 points from that match. [Marseille] were the better team, they had more chances than we did, but we did well on defense and we were able to get a fortunate bounce at the other end."

    MATCHDAY 2 vs Montpellier

Lille brought an attacking verve to the game against their French counterparts. An early goal from D. Payet signaled their intent, but the visitors were able to pull one back before halftime. Lille were decidedly the better team going into the half, and they showed it in the second half, scoring two goals from the run of play to put the result beyond doubt.

"We put the pieces together on offense, and everything clicked. I was befuddled by [Montpellier's] use of the offside trap. Once we figured out their tactic, it was fairly easy to beat. The two second half goals were well orchestrated."

    MATCHDAY 3 at Santos

Lille seemed to be the better side in this match, but could only manage a draw. While the team's attacking movement improved, their finishing did not. Poor clearances on corner kicks did both teams in, as Chedjou was able to blast home the opening goal, before a poor Beria clearance fell to Arouca, who put in the equalizer with 6 minutes to play. Les Dogues did well to keep Neymar shooting only from distance, limiting the damage to a road point.

"If we're going to compete for a title, these are the games we need to be winning. I feel we should have done better in this match, but credit Santos for sticking in and getting a point out of the match."

    COPPA 1 vs VfL Wolfsburg

Lille did everything but win in this one. 20 shots, 11 corners, the majority of possession...all for naught as Wolfsburg were able to strike on the counter to ensure Lille will not be vying for the Coppa Traditzione title. Almost every shot taken by Lille seemed to find the keeper's gloves, and the home team could only manage one goal from 11 corners in the match. A. Chedjou, the team's best defender, did not help matters, as his poor clearance and poor tackle led directly to the 1st two goals for Wolfsburg.

GG RedAL925 it was nice to see 2 original teams from season 1 taking to the pitch again. Really puts into perspective how far the entire TFS has come along. You controlled most of the play and I caught a break that you guessed the wrong way on that first goal. I caught a lot of breaks especially inside my own box as you had a few good chances to get it on net. Especially lucky when your 2 forwards bumped into eachother in the box, letting me off the hook for what I would have imagined as being a sure goal. GL the rest of the way.

    MATCHDAY 5 at Stoke City

Lille defeated Stoke City on the back of a solid performance from midfield anchor man Florent Balmont. Neither team could gain the advantage in the first half, but in the second, N. Roux dribbled into the box through a sea of defenders, finding Balmont, who had made a gut-busting run into the box, for a shot in front of goal that deflected off a defender and into the net. Stoke threatened on the counter attack, but Roux's 90' breakaway goal sealed the full points for Lille.

COPPA 2 vs I. Porto Alegre
For the first time in a long time, LOSC Lille were drawn into the so-called "Group of Life." For the second time, manager RedAL will not advance to the championship knockout round after a dismal performance against Serie C newboys I. Porto Alegre. Lille maintained possession, took more shots, but were burned repeatedly on the counter attack, a troubling trend this season. While not advancing to the championship round is disappointing, Lille will compete in what should be a less-talented consolation round for a chance to clinch a SuperCoppa berth.

    MATCHDAY 7 vs Hannover 96

LOSC Lille defended well, and managed to score a goal on a 5-man back line in a 1-0 win at home over Hannover 96. The visitors dominated proceedings early, and were unlucky not to score when a long outside-of-the-foot curving blast hit the post and came out. Lille did not maintain possession like they normally do, but it was good combination play from Mavuba and Balmont that unlocked the Germans defense, as the captain laid off a perfect ball that Balmont blasted through a defender's legs (with another on his back) and past the keeper's near post. Les Dogues must have blocked at least 5 shots in the 2nd half from going on goal, and S. Elana picked up his 3rd clean sheet of the season.

    SEASON 9 MIDSEASON REVIEW
    [IMG]

After an unsuccessful return to Lille last season, manager RedAL hope for bigger and better things in Season 9. Those hopes seemed ill-fated after the 1st week of the season, in which Lille only managed 2 points out of a possible 9. But as the 1st half of the season progressed, it became clear that, if the team was not going to win games, it was not going to lose them either. 5 draws and a win out of their first 7 games kept Lille right in the middle of the Serie A table. The rather slow start had Lille fans worried about yet another mid-table finish, but the last 3 games of the first half of the season proved to be the spark to what could be a historic season at Lille. A draw vs Lyon was followed by 2 wins against talented opposition, as Les Dogues knocked off Anzhi before barely edging out Udinese in the commish showdown. As it stands, Lille are just 2 points off the pace for a Serie A title. And with perennial powers shiftee and CxMacx10 off to slow starts, this might (might) be the season for a new champion.

"We continue to play our game, and make the opposition change their game plan based on our style of play. In this season, we have tried to slow things down even more, making negative passes for positive results. Our defense has not (yet) cracked under the strain of the counter-attack, and when our offense is clicking, there is no stopping us."

Goals have come from just about everywhere on the field; there are 9 different names on the score sheet in all competitions. What could be most surprising is the fact that 4 of the 5 MotM awards won by Lille have come from defense-minded players: 3 along the backline, and one from R. Mavuba. And while Lille have not scored more that 2 goals in a game, they have given up more than 2 goals only once (in a 3-2 loss to Swansea City).

Lille's Coppa fate is still to be decided, as Sao Paulo must take at least a point from West Brom in order to keep Lille in the 2-seed. A West Brom win would relegate Lille to the lesser Coppa knockout stage. Meanwhile, in the TSO-P Open Cup, Lille dispatched old enemy Athletic Bilbao to advance to the Quarterfinals of that competition. "To be honest, the Cup competitions are not our priority right now, but as long as we are in them, we will try to win them. A Serie A title is my dream, and I will work hard to obtain that above all else."

Fans of the club know that manager RedAL has not been the most consistent manager in the league in terms of results, so anything can happen in the 2nd half of the season. But it must be said that Les Dogues are primed for a title run if they can keep up the form they are in. "We played well enough to win some of the draws we had early in the season. If we can turn 1 point into 3 for the second half of the season, we'll be right there til the end. But these things are easier sai than done, especially in the uber-talented Serie A."

OFFENSIVE MVP: Marvin Martin - The French playmaker has done just that for Lille this season - make plays. His incredible vision and quick decision-making have directly created 3 goals and influenced many more this season.

DEFENSIVE MVP: Rio Mavuba - Captain fantastic has played brilliant football so far this season. A calming presence in midfield, Mavuba has been pivotal in breaking up the opposition's quick counter attacks, coming up with key tackles at the exact right moment. What was once a weakness of the club has become a relative strength.

    SEASON 9 IN REVIEW
    [IMG]
As much as Lille manager RedAL would like to believe it, nothing ever changes in the North of France. For another excruciating Serie A season, Lille's promising 1st half start (3-5-2, 14 F / 13 A) is put to waste by a dreadful 2nd half (3-1-6, 9 F / 13 A). "In the 1st half, we didn't lose, but we also didn't win. Our only losses were against two of the lower teams in the table (Swansea & Aston Villa), which gave us a glimmer of hope. But it all faded away, and fast."

After a revenge win vs Aston Villa, Lille plummeted down the table, losing 3 straight games to Sao Paulo, Hannover, & Gremio by a combined score of 7-1. "Our defense was not the problem, far from it. Despite the poor form in that stretch, overall the defensive unit was vastly improved." Lille tied the manager's record for Least Goals Allowed in a season, and 7 of the 10 MotM awards won by Les Dogues were from defensive players (not including R. Mavuba's 1 MotM as a CDM).

"We simply could not score." That was the theme of the 2nd half, with the team being shut out 6 times in the final 10 games of the season. "We showed incredible offensive balance in the 1st half of the season, with 9 different goal scorers by the end of the season. But something happened in the offensive system that we just couldn't fix. Passes weren't being strung together and the chances we created were weak at best."

In the end, pundits will say they saw it coming, as it always does with manager RedAL. As high as 2nd at one point in the season, Lille will finish the season in the bottom half of the table; once again safe from relegation, but nowhere near the top.

Mabye even more disappointing was Les Dogues tournament run. The reserves showed well in the TSO-P Open Cup, bowing out to eventual runners-up Udinese. But in the TFS Coppa, Lille had to rely on another team to advance out of the group stage. A 1-0 win over Ajax in the Round of 16, followed by a 5-2 win over Quarterfinal opponent Swansea City gave the team confidence, but Lille fell flat at the critical moment, losing 3-0 and missing a trip to the Semifinals for a 3rd time in team history.

    TEAM MVP: Franck Beria

A case could be made for any of the 4 members of the backline, but Beria gets the nod. Just as Jose Angel before him, Beria managed both defensive and offensive responsibilities with aplomb. 3 MotM awards complimented by a goal buffeted the Frenchman's already stellar defensive record, earning him a likely All-TFS Best XI selection.

    EARLY LOOK - SEASON 10

Lille have managed to avoid the drop for 9 consecutive seasons, but will the run end in season 10? Pundits think so, as TFS A has only improved with the addition of dooz LasVegasFC and of course A_Touch_Of_Class . "The quality in this league improves each season, and we have done well to maintain a mid-table status. But each season we fall closer and closer to the drop zone."

Things will not get any easier in Lille with the transfer window set to open soon. Already it seems Les Dogues will lose their top defender, as A. Chedjou seems destined for Turkey. Meanwhile, Premier League clubs are lining up for young starlet L. Digne, while on the attacking front S. Kalou has stated his desire to return to England. With only F. Thauvin coming in (returning from loan after being signed in January), it remains to be seen how the club will improve. "The heart of our midfield should be untouched, but we will have to answer major questions in defense, the strongest part of our team last season. We have enough attacking options to cope with loss, but the quality will surely take a hit."

If Lille do not spend in the transfer market, season 10 could very well be the last for manager RedAL in the top flight.

    MATCH WEEK 1 IN REVIEW

Once upon a time, Lille were renown for pass-and-move intricacy on offense, with goals coming from everywhere on the field. This season, the team will need to recreate its identity, as the team has failed to find the scoring touch necessary to win games in preseason and now into the TFSerie A campaign. 1 goal in 3 games is simply not going to keep the French club safe from relegation as the season rolls along. Despite the lack of scoring punch, the defense has performed quite well, recovering from a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of rivals Lyon and Zikry with a goalless draw vs juanchoCT14's Sunderland and a 1-1 draw vs rschwep's Hannover 96.

Following that match, manager RedAL stated "Another good performance from the defense. They will have to keep us in matches while we try to figure out how to score." If Lille are to remain in the top flight, they'll have to do it with grit and determination at the back, because at this point, the offense is not going to win any games.

    MATCH WEEK 2 IN REVIEW

After opening the season with 2 points out of a possible 9, Lille were given no favors with their match schedule, facing off against 4-time champion shiftee and self-proclaimed hotshot A_Touch_Of_Class in Match Week 2. While manager RedAL has won only twice vs shiftee, the team had taken a draw 9 times in their 18 meetings thus far. The hope was to hold the visitors to another draw, and it looked that way until Welliton's sliding toe poke edged Gremio in front 10 minutes from time. "Those points were vital for our season, but in all honesty we weren't planning on taking those from [shiftee]."

The same could have been said about Les Dogues next match vs Saint-Etienne, a side that blazed through 2 tiers of TFS, and now debuting in the top flight. A rough start for the newboys ensured trouble for Lille, as ASSE were certain to come out looking for 3 points. But Lille's defense stood up to the task, and with help from a misfiring ASSE front line, took a 1-0 victory out of the match on Balmont's quick turn and fire. "We weren't the better side in this match, and luck was certainly on our side, but we proved that we can win ugly in this match. We will need to do more of the same, I'm afraid, in the coming weeks while the offense sorts things out."

    MATCH WEEK 3 IN REVIEW

In the shortened Match Week, Lille faced off against two of the better Serie A sides in Anzhi and Seattle Sounders. A result of some kind was expected as the team traveled to Russia, as manager RedAL & Broncos218 had never before drawn a TFSerie match. There's a first for everything though, and it was this day, as the teams played out a 0-0 draw in which neither team really threatened to score. "It was another solid defensive performance from our guys. They did very well to shut down S. Eto'o, rendering him harmless on the righthand side."

Lille's fortunes were not so kind as they returned home to host Seattle Sounders and CxMacx10. Historically manager RedAL has had little success against the former champion, and that continued in this match, as the MLS outfit jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, finishing the match off in the 2nd half 4-1. "They had some fortunate bounces go their way, but in all honesty we were never winning that match."

Lille need only a point vs Geneseo98 & Bologna to clinch safe passage to the knockout round of TFS Coppa. Les Dogues can still win the group with a win AND Corinthians draw/loss OR a draw AND Corinthians loss. "To advance to the proper knockout round would be great, considering the league form we've been in lately."

    TEAM REPORT

    SERIE BUST, COPPA BOOM

It's been a tumultuous season for Lille thus far, with the team hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone for most of the season. This is not something new for manager RedAL, who has had his fair share of poor form, but this season is different, bringing a legitimate threat of being dropped at season's end. The team has scored 2+ goals in just one match this season (naturally, the reserves got the job done in a 2-1 win in TSO-P Open Cup), and have registered only 2 wins on the campaign.

Despite the offensive ineptitude, the defense has vastly improved from seasons past. Les Dogues have kept 5 clean sheets in TFSerie A play, and (aside from a 4-1 loss to Seattle) have held their opponents to under 2 goals in every match. "We've been scrapping out results thus far...if not for our defense we could be on our way to TFSerie B by now." But the team is starting to come into a good run of form, advancing to the semifinals of the TSO-P Open Cup and TFS Coppa Confed., a feat that has not been done since Season 7 at Real Sociedad.

"Cup success is great, but it will mean nothing if we are relegated. Our number one goal is still safety in TFSerie A. Anything less will be a disaster." The run-in to the end of Season 10 will be critical for Les Dogues survival chances. Two matches against TFS elite in shiftee and CxMacx10 will be hard to take a result from, but with matches against fellow relegation battlers IJGator and dooz, plus a "winnable" match vs LasVegasFC will be the key to Lille's season. Get results in those games, and safety should be all but guaranteed.

    BRUNO MAKES TFS DEBUT

After scoring a brace in Lille's TSO-P Open Cup quarterfinal win vs VfB Stuttgart, manager RedAL gave 21-year-old striker G. Bruno his first professional start with the 1st team, a 1-0 win vs Hannover 96. The young Belgian showed well in that match, smashing a header off the post with his 1st touch, and staying active through the 1st half. The debutant was subbed off in the 71' to a standing ovation from the home fans. "He had a good game, and I expect to see more of that in the Open Cup semifinals vs Seattle. If he plays well there, who know...maybe he'll start again [in TFS]." Bruno will be sent on loan to Bastia for the 2013-14 campaign.
