LSU defensive tackle Drake Nevis sacks Green Wave quarterback Joe Kemp

The 6th ranked LSU Tigers opened up their 2010 campaign in the Louisiana Superdome against the Tulane Green Wave in the Battle for the Tiger Rag. The rivalry game was pretty well put away after the 1st quarter. Star recruit, Terrance Gilmore opened the scoring for LSU with a 59-yard touchdown run early in the 1st quarter. Tulane responded with a big play from their Player of the Game Casey Robottom, who caught a quick pass, broke a tackle and raced 54 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7. From this point on, the game would be all LSU. Gilmore helped the Tigers work the ball deep into Tulane territory, but needed a breather and back-up running back Ryan Murphy came in and scored from 2 yards out with just under a minute left in the quarter. Over the next quarter and a half, Terrance Toliver would score 3 touchdowns and Josh Jasper would kick a field goal on the last play of the half to account for LSU's 38 points.

Toliver was named Player of the Game catching 4 passes for 130 yards and scoring on 3 of those 5 catches. Aside from the big play in the 1st quarter, LSU's defense was impressive on the day sacking Kemp 3 times and intercepting him 3 times. Defensive tackle Drake Nevis sacked Kemp twice and cornerback Patrick Patterson intercepted him twice.

Jordan Jefferson celebrates a touchdown in LSU's 23-10 win over Iowa State

LSU came into Ames well rested and a little rusty after a bye in Week 2. It took the Tigers a quarter to get going, after Jordan Jefferon had an errant option pitch on their only possession of the 1st quarter. An outmatched Iowa State team tried to play keep-away with LSU, but couldn't get enough 1st downs to make the drama last more than a quarter. After a scoreless 1st quarter, Jake Jasper kicked a 35-yard field goal to put LSU up 3-0. The Cyclone offense wasn't able to do much and had to punt the ball back to the Tigers, this time, freshman phenom Terrance Gilmore was able to find the end zone on a 9-yard run, then on the last play of the half, Jasper made the score 13-0 with a 34-yard field goal.

Gilmore scored the only points of the 3rd quarter on a 3-yard run to make the score 20-0 and there seemed to be no way back for the Cyclones. Grant Mahoney put Iowa State on the board early in the 4th quarter with a 40-yard field goal, but a minute and a half later, Jasper restored the Tigers' 20-point lead with a 46-yard field goal to make the score 23-3. Darius Darks caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Jerome Tiller to make the score 23-10 with 0:45 left in the game and when LSU recovered the onside kick, Jordan Jefferson knelt down twice and the game was over.

LSU improves to 2-0 and sits at #3 in the Coaches' Poll. The Tigers open SEC play next week when they host the Tennessee Volunteers.
