The franchise has been advanced and week 3 is now open! The deadline to get your week 3 games played is Monday 1/26/15 @ Midnight EST.

REMEMBER: Game recaps for any divisional games are required and must be posted by the winner in the Game Summaries & Team News forum. As always, recaps of non-divisional games are much appreciated as well!

    PLEASE REVIEW

    PLAYBOOKS / PLAY CALLING:

As everyone should be well aware, we now permit the use of custom playbooks when playing league games (if you missed it, perhaps you should pay more attention to the forums - original announcement: here). Regardless of whether a team uses a custom playbook or not, that doesn't change our expectations in regards to play calling and "mixing it up".

One of the biggest issues we have faced recently is the excessive use of shotgun, pistol, and spread formations in general. There is nothing wrong with using any of this, and we are well aware that in most instances game situations dictate play calling. However, it is (and has always been) a league requirement that teams mix up their play calling, on both offense and defense, and this isn't limited to just avoiding calling the same exact plays repeatedly.

Borrowed from a previous post, but I feel it sums things up nicely...
    • Run/Pass Ratio (mixing up play calling) - This one has many facets. Whether we are talking about calling the same plays repeatedly, or just the ratio of types of plays called, and it applies to both sides of the ball. Don't rely on the same 2 or 3 run plays for a whole drive, or repeatedly use the same pass patterns. Mix up whose running it or catching it, and how they are doing so. Dive into your playbook and learn to use all of it. You should never have to use the same offensive play more than 2-3 times in one game in most cases. Likewise with the types of plays to call. Generally we shouldn't see teams passing the ball 30+ times and running it less than 10 (or vice versa). On the same token, nobody should be running 2 man under and/or press coverage for 80% of their defensive snaps, or constantly stacking 8 men in the box on 1st and 2nd downs. Mix that shit up and learn to diversify your play calling.

    What do we expect?
    • We want to see everyone running a (close to) balanced offense, with a nice mix of running and passing.
    • Shotgun/Pistol should not encompass the majority of any team's game plan. If you need a new playbook to get some different looks, then by all means get one.
    • In general, we wouldn't expect to see anyone running the ball more (or even as much as) out of spread looks, than they are out of traditional or heavy/big looks.
    • Use of single type of pattern/route, but out of different formations, is not mixing it up. Use the entire route tree (and different receivers).
    • Avoid excessive use of plays that could be considered gimmicky/cheesy by some (wildcat, read option, QB runs, screens, etc.). These are all legitimate plays, and have their place and use, but please be aware of how often you have used such plays.
    • On the defensive side of the ball; we realize that some teams are better built to play a specific style of defense. Just make sure you are mixing in different looks here as well. Whether it is formations, play type (man, zone, blitz, etc), or gimmicky type stuff (DB blitz); just be sure you are mixing things up, and not overdoing it with any one thing.
    • The golden rule: ALL things in moderation
This is by no means all encompassing, just a general idea of our expectations. We are well aware that there are real NFL teams, like the Eagles, run a style of offense that wouldn't fit into these guidelines. We have said it before; just because you see it on Sundays, doesn't mean it is acceptable for our league. Situations like that are a perfect example of that philosophy.

Please keep this in mind when you are selecting/creating a playbook. If your current playbook won't allow you to mix things up as needed, then it is time to think about a new (or altered) play book.

At the same time, please don't take this as an invitation to over-analyze your opponent's play. There is no specific formula for mixing things up. Don't over-analyze. Review footage and see where/how you were beat. Practice, and overcome adversity. You WILL lose in this league. It doesn't necesarilly mean it was because your opponent did something unsavory.

    OWNER FUNDS & ROSTER REQUIREMENTS:
We are aware that some teams are continuing to struggle with team funds and as a result, cannot sign free agents in order to meet our roster requirements. We have discussed it and decided to not allow funds resets during the season, going forward.

With that being said, we will be reducing the number of required players on each team's roster.

This reduction could also help those teams struggling with team funds, as their overall player salary could now be decreased.

Thanks you all for your attention regarding these topics. Please be sure to reply to this thread.

    Good luck in week 3!

Understood. I would argue that ratio of pass to run is a matter of the circumstances in the game. For instance, if I only have the ball for small amounts of time because my opponent has done a great job keeping the ball out of my hands. That should be accounted for. Seeing as though I threw the ball 37 times and ran 9 I would assume the comments are made for me.

Feeling the weight of a guilty conscience? LOL

I assure you, if we took issue with anything you did, we would let you know directly. That little bit was actually recycled from a post that originated April of last year, so i can assure you that is wasn't a veiled reference to you in any way.

Quote from original post...click the arrow in the header to be taken to the original.

In any event, we are definitely aware that circumstances can dictate the flow and play calling of the game. There are going to be games where running a little more is called for and others where pass heavy is appropriate, but those occasions should be the exception and not the norm.
