    STATE OF THE LEAGUE ADDRESS

As we begin closing in on our first Madden 15 postseason, off-season, and subsequent simmed season cycle, there are a number of topics that we in league management would like to address with all of you.

Please be sure to read through this post in it's entirety, as the topics discussed here are paramount to the success of The Q going forward. Once you have read through this post, please reply to this thread with any questions, concerns, or comments. If anyone would prefer to contact us (myself, Doug, or Michael) privately and directly, please don't hesitate to do so. Response to this thread, by ALL owners in The Q, is MANDATORY and required no later than Wednesday evening (10/15/14) at Midnight EST.

    LEAGUE/FORUM PARTICIPATION

This topic has been discussed recently, but it bears repeating here, as it is the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT topic of all. Without participation, there is no Q.

I can't stress enough, how important it is that EVERY owner participates in league content. Again, we are not a league that wants owners who ONLY play their games. Our league is only as good as it's owners, and we need to see that everyone is involved and invested. Doing the required divisional recaps is our bare minimum requirement, and even for those we've recently had to call multiple owners out for missing recaps.

Nobody is exempt from needing to be an active participant, regardless of tenure, and I think we have made our expectations clear to everyone right from the start. If anyone has come to realize that they can't be (or aren't interested in being) an active participant in the league, more than just playing your games, please be straight up with us and we can come to an amicable resolution.

    SCHEDULING

First and foremost, use of the forums to schedule is an ABSOLUTE MUST. You can communicate with your opponent through what ever medium you choose, but your scheduling must be reflected in the forums.

This is another topic that has been addressed as of late. Simply put, every owner needs to be diligent in scheduling, and respectful of their opponents and their opponents' time. If you know your upcoming availability is going to be a little sketchy, give your opponent some advance notice. Try to schedule for the next week(s) before the current one is even done. Give your opponent actual times, not just generalities. If you schedule a specific time, respect your opponent and BE ON TIME. If you have to be late, give them a heads up ASAP! Scheduling for the day of advance should be a LAST RESORT. Too many times we have seen a game scheduled for the final day and some last minute complications occur.

OWNER ETIQUETTE - BOTH ON TSO & EXTERNALLY (GROUP ME, YIM, ETC)

It has been a longstanding policy with The Q (and it's predecessors) that any issues, complaints, disagreements, or the like, should not be aired in the public forums. This expectation doesn't begin and end with forums posts, but also extends to external communications such as GroupMe. To say we have been disappointed with some of the behavior and disrespect we have seen on the league GroupMe chat, would be an understatement. We have come close to shutting the group down on a couple of occasions, because of things that have transpired in the chat. To be perfectly clear; disrespecting other owners, whether publicly or privately, will NOT be tolerated, regardless of the medium used. If you have a beef, take it private, or bring it to league management, but keep it respectful. We are all grown men here, playing a game for fun, we need to act like it!

    THE Q & "OTHER" LEAGUES

We take pride in what we have put together here in The Q; and while there are countless other leagues in the Madden universe, we would like to think that we have differentiated ourselves from the vast majority of other leagues. While we never assume to be any better than the countless other Madden leagues out there, we are very secure in the fact that we are our "own" league. Now that's not to say that we don't have room for improvement, as we try to improve the league on a daily basis.

Obviously many of our owners also participate in other leagues, or at the very least we all have played in other leagues before. While we can appreciate that we may do things differently than these other leagues, our rules, policies, and procedures are what they are for a reason. If anyone has a suggestion regarding the league, we are more than happy to listen, but don't expect us to change just because your old/other league does things a different way. If we feel it makes sense for The Q, it will be considered and possibly implemented, if not, it won't.

But if anyone's response is to criticize this league or it's owners, because it's not like another league, then perhaps it's that owner's participation in The Q that should be reevaluated.

    TEAM FINANCES

There has been a lot of talk about team finances this year and there have been questions about playing with coaches, rather than owners. This has been discussed among league management, and we will be sticking with owners only mode in our franchise. While we don't disagree that there seem to be some flaws with the implementation of owner mode this year, and how it relates to available team funds, we still feel it is better than the alternative.

We have heard the arguments that if an NFL team has cap space, they should be able to spend it. That theory certainly has some merit, but that would make team management far less challenging and teams would essentially be able to spend at will. With owner mode and team funds, teams have to make tough choices when it comes to player contracts. Sometimes big money players need to be let go, or can't be resigned, that is also a reality of the NFL.

The days of being able to ignore all the owner mode options and still be able to resign all of your players are a thing of the past right now. Play with prices, target player that will sell more jerseys, win more games! There are things to do to increase profits. If you got rid of all of your star players and are toiling through a self imposed rebuilding year, you should expect your checkbook to suffer.

All owners need to be aware of their funds and they have to be taken into consideration in all phases of your team's operation.

    STADIUM REBUILDS & TEAM RELOCATION

We will be announcing guidelines for rebuilds and relocation very soon. Just know that we are going to be pretty strict when it comes to allowing stadium rebuilds. If your team is already broke, a new stadium is not the answer. The weekly lease payments can and will cripple an already struggling team. Fair or not, that's the way it is in the game. We won't allow anyone to kill the future of their franchise, for a new stadium.

    PENALTIES

There has been a lot of commentary this season about the penalties in our league. Yes we are aware that the majority of penalties seen are Roughing the Passer and Facemasking. We will continue to try to tweak the penalty settings, as we would love to see more diversity in the penalties called. However, what we have seen as a whole is far from unacceptable. Some games seem to have an abundance, others have none. That's not that unrealistic if you ask me.

We are of the opinion that the fact that we are seeing penalties is refreshing. We have heard some complaints that penalties seem to happen in key situations, but that too is realistic, is it not? Ideally we can get it balanced so penalties are more diverse, but the penalties are not going away.

The final thing I will say regarding penalties is this; I have seen some say that they start declining penalties if they feel that they are excessive, but then get miffed if their opponent doesn't return the favor. If anyone wants to decline penalties for any reason, they are more than welcome to, but nobody is obligated to decline a penalty at any time. So if you decline penalties, do so at your own risk.

    GAMEPLAY (POSITIONAL BOUNDARIES)

We have seen quite a few instances of owners seemingly moving user controlled defensive players outside of their positional boundaries pre-snap. Whether it's bringing safeties towards the LoS, crowding the line or dropping back with LBs, or moving CBs at all, it appears that quite a few owners need to refresh their memories on the player movement rules.

I also want to emphasize the following two points:
    • If you move a player pre-snap on defense, you must maintaing control of THAT player until the ball is snapped by the offense.
    • Automatic movement of defenders by the computer (like a safety moving up on a blitz) are exempt from these restrictions.
    TWITCH STREAMING (ARCHIVING)

Everyone please make sure to set your Twitch streams to archive your broadcasts! If we are unable to go back a review a broadcast, it kind of defeats the purpose of required broadcasts. Check your settings and make sure you are archiving!

    SPORTSMANSHIP (TANKING)

Obviously a common theme when discussing our expectations is respect.

Respect for the game. Respect for your opponents. Respect for the league.

Every owner is expected to make an honest effort to win each and every game. Our league is built on that QUALITY competition.

There seem to be a few instances as of late where owners might be "playing for the pick" rather than "playing for the win". While we are not accusing anyone specifically, there have certainly been some questionable decisions made late in some recent games. I would like to think that these instances are just bad decisions and not deliberate actions for the sake of better draft standing. Seeing as how any win or loss can have a direct impact on multiple other teams' playoff and draft positioning, I would like to believe that everyone in The Q has the integrity to put forth a full effort to win each and every time.

If anyone has thoughts of throwing a game, just know that your are hurting the health of your own team. With finances being significantly tougher this year, I would hope everyone would try to maximize every opportunity to improve their team (and players) and also bring in more cash for their team.

    Only one thing about penalties.

I like how they are. It does seem real. I have noticed I get called a face mask if I go for a strip. So I've actually tried to stop that. Also roughing the passer seems to happen in a very crucial time of the game. Usually a 3rd and long with a blitz of some sort. Which to me is very real.

I understand that some are unhappy with it. But to me, its on point.

Thanks for everything you guys do! So proud to be apart of an awesome league.

    Heath
